Believe it, Tanya. Also, for those of you who missed them because they spent all day wreaking havoc at Camp Webb, Natasha's twins Eryk and Nic, and my daughter Athena. Note the heart-shaped "Anarchy" symbol she's wearing. That's not just a fashion statement, trust me.

Pumice in the Holocene of Oregon, USA.

Crater Lake is a large, deep, freshwater lake in the Cascade Range of America's Pacific Northwest. It formed about 7,700 years ago when an ancient volcano called Mt. Mazama had an enormous explosive ash eruption. The eruption was followed by collapse of the mountain, leaving a large depression which later filled with water. Large holes or depressions formed when a volcano destroys itself or collapses are called calderas. Crater Lake Caldera in Oregon is a world-class example of this type of volcanic feature.

Shown above is the Pumice Desert, a barren landscape about 6 miles north of Crater Lake Caldera. The site has a significant deposit of pumice - it is over 100 feet thick. The material fills a pre-existing glacial valley and was delivered via a large pyroclastic flow (ash & pumice flow) during Mazama's 7.7 ka eruption. Pyroclasts include light-colored rhyodacite pumice and darker-colored basaltic andesite scoria.

Age: early Holocene (~7550 to 7760 years ago)

Locality: Pumice Desert, view from roadside pullout, ~6 miles north of Crater Lake Caldera, Crater Lake National Park, southwestern Oregon, USA

A victim of the British Army "shot at dawn" policy during WW1.

He had enlisted in the Worcestershire Regiment in 1912 as a drummer boy and served on the Western Front from the beginning of the First World War.

When he arrived in France with the 3rd Battalion on the 12th August 1914, his rank was that of a Lance-Corporal.

He had fought with his Battalion in every engagement and was promoted to Sergeant.

In August 1917 the 3rd Battalion was in action near the Bellewarde Ridge, when Sergeant Wall went missing during the attack.

This was unlike him and it could have been that he was suffering from "battle fatigue" which affected his mental state.

Unfortunately, this was not considered at his trial.

On the 6th September 1917, Sergeant Wall was executed by firing squad, for desertion, at Poperinghe.

He was 22 years of age.

The GAR Building was built on land once owned by Lewis Cass. Known as Detroit's castle, it was built for retired Civil War Veterans.

The building has new owners and the web design and marketing company, Mindfield, plans to occupy the upper floors in 2013, with the ground floor dedicated to a restaurant and shops. A portion of the building is also required to honor civil war veterans.

I can't resist posting another photo of native Humboldt Lily (Lilium humboldtii ssp. ocellatum, Liliaceae) growing in Kinevan Canyon, taken from slightly above. Unfortunately, there won't be many more. Drought and deer and the mystery grub that eats the flower buds have taken down the rest of them. Of course there are other canyons, and I'll have to do some hunting! They are beautiful flowers, almost too pretty to be native. But they are. (San Marcos Pass, 26 June 2015)

I didn't use flash or do any photo tricks to get that black background, but I did wait a while for a beam of sunlight to get to the flower with a shaded background. It was worth the wait!

The University of Iowa today announced that it has partnered with the Raise.me scholarship platform on a statewide pilot project to encourage and improve college readiness among Iowa high school students.

Using Raise.me, high school students from select school districts in each of Iowa’s 99 counties will be eligible to earn up to a total of $1,200 in “micro-scholarships” to attend the UI by meeting certain criteria, such as achieving an A or a B grade in select math classes or being involved in arts, athletics or other extra-curricular programs.

The goal of the program is to encourage students to take rigorous courses and get involved in school activities, all while saving for future college expenses.

The high schools selected for the four-year pilot project are from the district in each county with the highest free and reduced lunch percentage, based on 2015-16 data from the Iowa Department of Education. Des Moines Public Schools is one of the districts that will be participating in the project.

The issue of negotiations with the Russian Federation may become relevant only when Russia is ready to accept the document developed on the platform of the Peace Formula – President.

Today, the only working platform on the key principles of peace in Ukraine is the Peace Formula proposed by our state. This was stated by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the end-of-year press conference in Kyiv.

The Head of State reminded that the fourth meeting of national security and foreign policy advisors on the implementation of the Peace Formula would be held in Switzerland in January within the Davos Forum.

"We will work towards ensuring that this meeting gathers representatives from all continents, including the Global South. This meeting will address the last five points of the Peace Formula. The first five points were addressed by advisors at the previous meeting at the end of October in Malta," he explained.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that after this meeting of advisors, work would be done to organize the first founding summit at the level of state leaders. He believes it is necessary to do everything possible to ensure this summit takes place despite all the challenges existing in the world. This will mean that the world continues to pay attention to Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine and to the Peace Formula. According to the President, his recent foreign visits to Latin America, the USA, and Europe have also helped keep the focus on the war in Ukraine.

The Head of State explained that at the first Global Peace Summit, the leaders will work out an agreement between the countries on the fundamental provisions that will be embodied in the relevant document. After this document is agreed upon by all states, it can then be presented to representatives of the Russian Federation.

"If it is ready to accept that document, it will indicate that the issue of negotiations is relevant. As of today, it is not relevant. I don't see a request from Russia, I don't see it in their actions, I see only arrogance in their rhetoric. And murder," Volodymyr Zelenskyy summarized.

This iconic neon sign is a good reminder how interesting things were in the past. Today's urban landscape has become very boring ever since the city by-law designed to kill neon signs was introduced in 1974.

The Smilin' Buddha Cararet sign was located at East Hastings near Columbia Street from the 1950s to the early 1990s. Local alternative rock band, 54-40, acquired & restored the sign before donating it to the museum.

JuneStarted to work at the begging of the year to push the idea of a TV show to be broadcast worldwide that would focus on Japanese culture. After getting approval from the powers that be at Tokyo MX TV and then hunting around for sponsors, the show became a reality but only for a single pilot episode to be aired in June. You can read how the show came to be and see the entire Episode 0 below.

Stained glass of a crown.

The Church of the Holy Cross in Middlezoy, Somerset, England dates from the 13th century and has been designated as a grade I listed building.

William of Bitton II was the rector by 20 April 1263. From the 13th to early 16th century, when it became a separate parish, Middlezoy was a chapelry of Sowy parish. The church was originally dedicated to St. Lawrence and later to St. Mary before adopting the current dedication in 1754.

The church has a chancel and a nave with a south aisle and south porch, and a north chapel or vestry. The 3-stage west tower was built around 1483, similar to that at Lyng. The tower contains six bells including one of 1608 probably by George Purdue of Closworth. The upper part of the tower was restored by Sall Strachey Historic Conservation. The work included replacing the pinnacles and sections of the pierced parapet.

The whole church has been renovated many times with a major restoration being undertaken in the 1860s to plans by Charles Knowles, with further repairs in 1908.

The parish is part of the benefice of Middlezoy and Othery and Moorlinch with Stawell and Sutton Mallet, within the Glastonbury deanery.
