Starting with a side note. CB&Q had only 3 E-unit B-units, all E5Bs, numbers 9910B, 9911B, and 9912B. Two of the shovel noises had B-units, 9906B and 9907B.
Now to the topic of this post. The first CB&Q E7As, 9916A through 9925B built in November 1945, had small number boards making reading their road number impossible in most photographs. The problem with the number boards is the operators in towers and other locations could not see the number to "OS" them. I.e., they could not tell the dispatcher, "9917B by Oakland at 10:52". "OS" means "On Sheet", i.e., written down. Here are some examples. I'll number them 99XX.
1. CB&Q E7 99XX in St. Paul, MN at Division St. Tower on June 9, 1964. This looks like the Afternoon Zephyr headed for Chicago. The first dome, before the head-end cars, was Silver Dome (see next photo). The state capitol dome is above the last car.
The number of places in the US where steam-powered trains meet with any regularity is pretty small. I can think of perhaps five. Osier, Colorado, Silverton, Colorado, Cass, West Virginia, Deep River, Connecticut, and this place...Groff's Picnic Grove, just outside Strasburg, Pennsylvania. Here, the Strasburg Railroad's lightest locomotive, CN Mogul #89, hauls a mixed train westbound, while Great Western Decapod #90 heads for Paradise with the hourly passenger run. Little 89 is seldom seen in light like this, as she spends most of her time on the half hour trains at mid-day during the summer months. Fortunately, in 2010, the railroad trotted her out for service on the mixed train during the Trains & Troops event in November, when the afternoon sun is just a little easier on the old girl's complexion!
Is it 37422 or 37266 or are you allowed to underline two locos in your spotting book. Seen on the RHTT cleaning Selby Swing Bridge.Front number is 422 whilst the number on the side is 266 !

This is Day 2 of my "76 Days of Summer" Project.
The big number 2. The day that means, it wasn't just one photo I took the day before, this is the start of a continuation. The ability to say I will do something, and for once in my life follow through with it.
So how did I spend, day number 2?
I finished watching all of "Suits" that Netflix has to offer, and started watching "Orange is the New Black", which just doesn't seem to fill the void.
Metra's "newest" and highest-numbered F40, number 217, (ex-VRE and Amtrak) teams up with their "newest" and highest-numbered F59: freshly-rebuilt number 99. The pair accelerates up the grade at Noble Street, Chicago, on a Milwaukee District run of some sort.

The News Chronicle's "I-Spy Tribe", complete with Big Chief I-Spy awards certificates and orders of merit for successfully completed I-Spy books, was a popular past time for many children in post-WW2 years. In many ways it was books such as these that helped foster my childhood inquisitiveness! Although the books and name changed hands on many occassions, including the transfer of the Chronicle to the Daily Mail, the actual premise and books of the title carried on into this century, latterly published by Michelin.
This book, number 9, was issued just after the Daily Mail's acquisition of the Chronicle in 1961. "I-Spy in the street" has a fabulous cover complete with a fire tender, road signs of the style adopted by several central London boroughs, and a Policeman with a very early 'walkie-talkie' radio!

When I arrived in Rockport, Mass. this morning I knew I was going to sketch this scene. Little did I know that this was the ultimate artist's subject of the New England coast. This fishing shack was built in 1884 and dubbed Motif Number 1 by the painter Lester Hornby. I hope I did it justice.
Copy Number 1 of the first edition of Ulysses, as published by Shakespeare and Company. It contains an inscription from Joyce to Harriet Shaw Weaver and was dated the 2nd of February 1922 - the date of publication. Weaver donated it to the National Library of Ireland 30 years later.
The photo was taken in the Museum of Literature, Ireland - a partnership between UCD and the National Library of Ireland. An autographed first edition of Ulysses, I believe, is the most expensive book of the 20th century.

The second generation of the Camaro was launched for the 1970 model year running through to 1981dubbed the Super Hugger the second generation was developed without the rush of the first generation and benefited from a greater budget justified by the success of the first generation. Longer and wider than the previous generation and reputed to be more of a drivers car. Although it was an all-new car, the basic mechanical layout of the new Camaro was familiar, engineered much like its predecessor with a unibody structure utilizing a front subframe, A-arm and coil spring front suspension, and rear leaf springs. The chassis and suspension of the second generation were greatly refined in both performance and comfort; sound proofing and road holding.
The performance Z28 option was dropped due to ever-tightening emission standards that spelled the end of the higher-output versions of the 350 cubic-inch V8, The Z28 was re-introduced, in the Spring of 1977 s a 1977½ in response to dramatically increasing sales of Pontiac's Trans Am, and like the Trans Am the Z28 was an instant sucessand was powered by a 350 cubic-inch V8 with four-barrel carburetor and 185 horsepower (175 horses with California emissions equipment), with most cars sold equipped with air conditioning and an automatic transmission for a comfort-oriented public. The engine no longer came with the 4-bolt main bearing engine block, forged crank, forged pistons, big valve heads and performance camshaft that had always been part of the RPO Z28 Special Performance Package,
1981 was the last model year for the second generation Camaro, cars remained virtually unchanged from the 1980 model year, he Z28 was still powered by a 350 cu in (5.7 L) V8, however due to new emissions regulations the engine was now equipped with a CCC (Computer Command Control) unit for the first time. This predecessor to modern engine control modules had an oxygen sensor, an electronically controlled carburetor, a throttle position sensor, coolant sensors, a barometric pressure sensor, a Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor (MAP), and a check engine light on the dash. The transmission was now equipped with a lockup torque converter, controlled by the CCC as well. The CCC could also be used as a self-diagnostic tool. However, as the goal of this change was strictly emissions reduction, horsepower dropped to 175 hp

Dont ask me why. But it is.
I was pretty inspirationless today but I was playing pool in our sunroom and decided to make a rainbow out of my favorite pool balls (solids...I hate stripes!) and take a DOF picture. It kinda sucks though.
Oh well. I liked the colors.

The title refers to the fact that this was taken on a flight from Cairns to Darwin heading west. We left the ground just after the sun had set but after a quick climb to nearly 30,000 feet, we caught the sun up again!
This was taken in 1988, in the good old days when you could ask the hostess nicely if you could pay a visit to the pilots in the cockpit. They even kindly allowed me to take a photo. Can you imagine being able to do that now? The plane is possibly a Boeing 737 / 300. It was an Ansett Airlines flight (now part of history as they ceased operation in 2001). I would imagine being 35 years on from this that the average cockpit would look very different as this was the time of real instruments, dials and switches rather than modern touchscreens.
I did post this many years ago, but it was a poor quality scan. This one has turned out much better.
Original colour slide was taken with a Pentax Zoom 70 using Kodachrome 100 slide film. Scanned with a Canon R10 fitted with a Canon RF35mm macro lens.
Featured artist in the Boboli Gardens was Jan Fabre, with a number of his works around the Belvedere. I understand they're silicone bronze.

Not so long ago, I came up with the Golden Ratio Principle which describes why The Golden Ratio is so beautiful.
The Golden Number Ratio Principle: Dr. E’s Golden Ratio Principle: The golden ratio exalts beauty because the number is a characteristic of the mathematically and physically most efficient manners of growth and distribution, on both evolutionary and purely physical levels. The golden ratio ensures that the proportions and structure of that which came before provide the proportions and structure of that which comes after. Robust, ordered growth is naturally associated with health and beauty, and thus we evolved to perceive the golden ratio harmonies as inherently beautiful, as we saw and felt their presence in all vital growth and life—in the salient features and proportions of humans and nature alike, from the distribution of our facial features and bones to the arrangements of petals, leaves, and sunflowers seeds. As ratios between Fibonacci Numbers offer the closest whole-number approximations to the golden ratio, and as seeds, cells, leaves, bones, and other physical entities appear in whole numbers, the Fibonacci Numbers oft appear in nature’s elements as “growth’s numbers.” From the dawn of time, humanity sought to salute their gods in art and temples exalting the same proportion by which all their vital sustenance and they themselves had been created—the golden ratio.

Ansel Adams is not only my favorite photographer, but he is one of the greatest photographers and artists of all time. And just like great artists including Michelangelo, Monet, Degas, Renoir, Leonardo da Vinci, Vermeer, Rembrandt, Botticelli, and Picasso, Ansel used the golden ratio and divine proportions in his epic art.
Not so long ago I discovered golden regions in many of his famous public domain his 8x10 aspect ratio photographs. I call these golden harmony regions "regions of golden action" or "ROGA"S, as seen here:
