A new batch of warming huts, designed to keep ice skaters warm on the cold Assiniboine River trail, have been unveiled at The Forks in downtown Winnipeg.

Officials with The Forks showed off the winners of the 2013 Warming Huts competition, in which architects and artists design shelters for winter enthusiasts skating, walking or skiing on the frozen river.

The contest attracted almost 100 submissions from around the world this year. A jury chose three winning designs:

Hygge House, a joint effort between three Winnipeg design firms.

The Smokehouse by aamodt/plumb architects in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Woolhaus by Myungkweon Park, a landscape architect in New York.

Hygge House is a "reproduction of one of the most cherished symbols of Canadiana — the wilderness cottage," according to the designers.

The cabin-like hut will be a bright yellow colour to help brighten up the winter landscape, they said.

By contrast, The Smokehouse will have a black charred-wood-like exterior. Felt-lined interior walls and a fire pit will encourage a "quiet warm space."

Woolhaus will also use felt to create "an interior environment that is isolated from the intense cold, brightness and noise of the frozen Assiniboine River," according to the designer.

Construction of the warming huts started in early January and, weather permitting, go onto the Assiniboine River trail shortly. They will join eight huts that were built in previous years.

Besides the three competition hut designs, organizers have invited architects from Atelier Big City — a collective of three architects in Montreal — to design a warming hut.

As well, a hut designed by 100 University of Manitoba architecture students will appear on the river. Weave Wave will knit 100 pieces of material together into a "dynamic multi-textured hut."

"American Idol" officially kicked off on Tuesday morning at the 2013 TCA in Pasadena. That's where new judges Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban took the stage to face the critics -- and there were plenty of them: those who had stuck by the show for more than a decade, hoping to find the next superstar, as its tagline boldly stated.

This year, the slogan has changed to "Everyone Dreams, 'Idol' Delivers," but where the press was concerned: the new batch of contestants take a backseat to the drama of the judges' panel.

Indeed, it took about three questions before the much-blogged about "feud" was mentioned. The two who clashed -- Carey and Minaj -- smiled some, deflected a lot, but in the end, had a couple of nice things to say about each other.

"This is a very passionate panel, there are a lot of strong personalities," said Carey who noted that at the start of the process it became clear that there could be "differences of opinion." As for the North Carolina rumble, which leaked out via cell phone video, "The fighting is what it is," Carey continued. "This is 'American Idol' -- it's bigger than all that. It's bigger than some stupid trumped-up thing."

That's not to say that anything about the clash was staged. In fact, Fox president of alternative programming Mike Darnell went out of his way to emphasize, "It's authentic." Added executive producer Nigel Lythgoe: "Two of them were always angry." And FremantleMedia's Trish Kinane pointed out that the "Idol" audience was asking -- even begging -- the producers for one thing above all else: "They told us they wanted honesty," she said.

With that in mind, Minaj and Carey were both asked to say something nice about each other. Minaj went first: "I say nice things about Mariah all the time, she's one of my favorite artists of all-time she's really shaped a generation of singers. To be on a panel with her, it's kind of crazy because these singers aspire to be a Mariah Carey. So I feel excited to see them so excited."

Replied Carey, pointing out that the two of them worked together early in Minaj's career: "That was obviously a sweet thing to say... I know and feel that she's going to go very far and am grateful for anything nice that she or anyone says about me."

But when it comes to their jobs: finding promising talent and launching a music career, they take that responsibility very seriously and it shows. Perhaps no better example was offered than when Minaj recounted her own experiences watching the show at home. "I didn't like when people would be overtly passive," she said. "We're here to do a job. I don't put someone through because of a great story or because there's something going on that may make people cry... I didn't really have a problem saying no because we're looking for the best of the best. It brothers me when someone says yes and don't deserve it."

Hallelujah to that! But in the end, it was Mariah Carey who nailed the "Idol" dynamic in one punchline: "We're putting the 'fun' back in dysfunction."

After a glorious few months back in the closing period of 2016 the U.K. and no doubt other parts of Europe basked in the knowledge that for whatever reason we were ahead of the U.S. for new batches of Hot Wheels. Roll forward just a few months and we are now sadly still awash with these batches with no real sign of moving forward, so much so that our Poundland stores are now just one batch behind the very latest available here and equal and sometimes ahead of other retailers who charge nearly 50% more for them! With a sense of great deja-vu my first ever trip to Sitges exactly three years ago entailed a visit to a large Carrefour hypermarket where their pegs were full of new stuff not yet available in the U.K. and a recent visit to another one came up with the same thing. Sites itself has a Carrefour supermarket, indeed its literally a one minute walk from our flat but sadly its a smaller food and toiletries outlet which doesn't sell toys but a much needed visit to Ikea in Barcelona meant a stop off at a much much bigger store which had a huge toy aisle meaning I was able to get this brand new recolour of the 2015 Mazda MX-5. Obviously this casting will probably never be viewed in the same light as the much more stock looking Matchbox equivalent but I actually like it even if it does have that monstrously large rear spoiler! I was expecting to see the same Yolk livery as the previous recolour but HW to their credit have given it a totally new Eibach logo which looks both neat and fresh. Hopefully this will turn up in our stores soon. Mint and boxed.

Aatm Yogashala welcomes all students and wishes them the best of luck with their yoga journey.🙏

Test shots from the second roll of Kodak Vision ECN2 320T film that was kindly sent to me by Max Miedinger Max Miedinger.

This film stock was made for cinematography, and is balanced for Tungsten light and uses the ECN-2 process. The film has a sticky black "Remjet" coating which must be removed, and prevents the film being processed in a standard C41 lab. I used my exhausted Tetenal C41 kit so as not to risk spoiling a new batch.

The expected blue cast is due to the film being used in daylight without a correcting filter.

I used an Olympus XA camera, and set the meter to ISO 200.

For this exposure I used a flashgun with a pale orange filter taped over it, the aim was to get a "natural" colour for near subjects, with the more distant objects left with the blue cast. Results were variable.

Cooked sous-vide for about 13 hours at 82C. I vacuum packed the duck-legs with some coconutmilk, fishsauce, ginger, galangal, lemongras and lime leaf. I thought it tasted great! I was really enthusiastic. We ate them with "zuurkoolstamp" (sauerkraut mash) but I'm sure it will be great in some Asian style salad as well. I will make a new batch for sure. Always great to have in my freezer.

Santa Fe to Williams, 12 November 2017

We had a great time in Santa Fe, but I had to get back to work, so on Sunday, 12 November, it was time to start our trip home.

We were stopping off at the Grand Canyon on the way back. I had visited the Grand Canyon in 1982 and 1983, so it had been a while for me, and Anne had never been there.

On 12 November, we took Railrunner back Albuquerque and then Amtrak's Southwest Chief to Williams Jct., Arizona, the station nearest the Grand Canyon. ATSF used to serve Williams on its main line, but a line relocation around 1960 reduced grades and curves and moved the main line a little ways north of Williams. ATSF still had a line through Williams as their line to Phoenix continued to use the old main line to Ash Fork, the former junction with the Phoenix line. Williams was the junction of ATSF's Grand Canyon branch.

Our trip started on the 1020 am departure from Santa Fe, train 703, led by MP36 106. The trip to Albuquerque took an hour and a half, which would have left us with over 4 hours in Albuquerque until the Chief was due. We were planning to have lunch, but then what?

I half jokingly suggested to Anne that we ride the train all the way to the end of the line at Belen and then return. That would take another 1.5 hours and still leave us plenty of time to get lunch before the Chief was due. She had settled into her seat on Railrunner and decided that if she had to kill some time, riding the train was as good of a way to do it as sitting at the combined Greyhound and Amtrak station in Albuquerque. The extra charge to go all the way to the end of the line and back was $1 each, so it did not break the bank.

We got to see the country that we passed through in the dark on our way to Albuquerque. Beautiful, if desolate north of Albuquerque, greener south of there as the train follows the Rio Grande to Belen. We saw some bison at one point.

At Belen, a cut of BNSF units was crossing over on the main line next to the the Railrunner station as our train waited 15 minutes to return north.

Back in Albuquerque, we stashed our bags and went back to the same New York style pizza place where we ate a few days earlier. Good pizza and good beer.

An Amtrak P42 and Horizon coach were parked at the station. Not sure why they were there.

The Chief arrived early, shortly after we'd moved out to the platform to wait for it. We climbed on after a big crowd got off. It seemed to me that about half of the coach passengers get off in Albuquerque and a new batch gets on. The train only had 2 coaches and they were full. Amtrak could probably run another coach on this train in the off season ad still fill it.

The dining car dinner did not disappoint, even if we had to take a relatively early seating as that was what was left when we boarded. We were not yet famished, having eaten a fair bit of pizza for lunch.

The sunset was gorgeous, then the night was dark. We were on time into Williams Jct., where a van operated by the Grand Canyon Railway Hotel was waiting to pick us up.

Eternal East Bus has recently renewed its fleet with a new batch of coaches. Departing from the previous China Kong or Marcopolo bodywork, they have opted for a new manufacturer, Guangtong, for their latest vehicles.

The new fleet includes the Guangtong GTK6125V6H, built on the Volvo B11R chassis, with the B11R chassis already being part of the EE Bus fleet. Another model in the fleet is the Guangtong GTK6125R6E1, which features a Chinese-built Yuchai Diesel Engine and ZF Automatic Transmission.

The brand-new Guangtong buses have been spotted along Tuen Mun Road, transporting passengers from various bus stops in downtown Hong Kong to Shenzhen Bay Port. At the port, passengers transfer to corresponding buses that take them to different destinations across the Greater Bay Area.

The Gremlins are back, and this time, they've taken total control over the building of a media mogul.

Gotta love the colours of Summer, eh? New batch of salsa, this time with garden fresh tomatoes, hot and sweet peppers, green onion, pineapple sage and lemon balm (of course!), then jazzed up with pineapple, white onion, garlic, lime zest and juice, cumin and sea salt! Simple, delicious and versatile!

Here we have a new batch of unidentified neg. Any assistance on the locations of these or any other details on them would really be appreciated

I did a LOT of these manuals for the bank. Whenever we'd send a new batch of marketing materials (posters, drive through panels, handouts, etc) to the various branches, we'd always send them a manual such as this to let the employees know how things should be displayed.

The number of drive through units each branch varied. Some only had one, most had two, and a few had three. So sometimes we would do a different design for each unit.

It may seem unnecessary to have to show people the order in which they should place the drive through panels, but when you're outside changing them and the wind's blowing the sheets all around, it's easy to get things out of order.

After a while I got to where I could turn one of these out in an hour or so.

London United's BCE 47017 is one of the earlier batch of BYD/Enviro400EV (MMC) City electric vehicles which were delivered new to Shepherd's Bush (S) bus garage in the early spring of 2020 for use on the busy inner West London route 94, where the original fleet of vehicles operating on route 94 were a fleet of Wright Gemini 3 bodied Volvo B5LH Hybrid vehicles which were delivered new to London United in the early spring of 2016. In this view BCE 47017 is seen straying from route 94 onto route 148 as it hurries its way westwards along Westminster Bridge Road in Waterloo passing the vast site of St Thomas's Hospital to its nearside on its way from Camberwell Green out to White City bus station on the cloudy early afternoon of Wednesday 15th September 2021. This earlier batch of BCE vehicles dating from 2020 are fitted with motorised roller blinds compared to the LED blind displays fitted as standard to the newer batch of BCE vehicles built in 2021.

Great to see Poundland continuing to obtain newer batches of short carded Hot Wheels and still only 1.50 each which makes other UK retailers seem massively out of step! They've got in 2023 Case M which i've already obtained from elsewhere so only cherry picked the best castings from this assortment including the still hyped Alfa Romeo GTV6 3.0.

I've already managed to find several and familiarity hasn't lessened its impact, it is still simply stunning for a basic Mainline release with some great licensed logos and the introduction of the chrometastic L4 wheels which are going to be customisers favourites for a long time yet! ;-p
