A German three-mast barque, the first of a series built as school ships for the German Reichsmarine in 1933.

She was taken as war reparations by the Soviet Union after World War II and renamed Tovarishch. The ship was acquired by sponsors, after a short period under the Ukrainian flag in the 1990s and a prolonged stay in British ports due to lack of funds for necessary repairs.

Then she sailed to her original home port of Stralsund where her original name of Gorch Fock was restored on 29 November 2003. She is a museum ship, and extensive repairs were carried out in 2008.

The Federal German government built a replacement training ship Gorch Fock (1958) which is still in service.

Necessary Consequences (Sony a7 Mark II - Voigtlander 110mm F2.5 APO Macro)

There's this little itty-bitty stream that runs through the forest and this is the only place where it's even actually visible, and I've been wanting to do a photo with it for a while. I figured it would be a great subject for a photo with my caped character (I still need a name for him!) I just kept always missing the right lighting for it. So I finally got out there early the other day. I could see the exact light ray aproaching the area and was all set up. And as it turns out the light just misses the spot entirely, so there's no time of day when I could get the light beam necessary! So I decided to go ahead with the photo anyway and actually completely created this light in photo shop. I just can't imagine him existing without some source of light. I am verrrrry proud of myself! What do you think?

“... something that is undesirable but must be accepted.”

This is not a love song,

either

it never was, and never professess to be

neither

can it ever be

with that in mind

the world isn't exactly as we see it

just in case, lets remind

those of us who wish to admit...

...that the world looks better

when we alter our state of mind

freeing ourselves from the daily fretter

a change is as good as a chance to unwind

be yourself

see yourself

free yourself

...with the key to yourself

this is not a fanciful flight of illusion

only a soft tilt upon the daily shift

a new light for the old windows' solution

for the breath of life, the gift

is floating in the air of absolution.

This is my final dunes series from my trip to White Sands National Park. While editing a photo for a high key look, I pushed a slider further than necessary and discovered by accident a look that I liked––– minimalist, abstract, interpretive … not the look I was seeking and certainly different from all the photos I had created so far. The technique only worked on certain scenes, contrasty and with interesting shadow areas. I numbered them as I went along but am posting in a different order, so the number sequencing is not progressive. Here are my final six images from White Sands.

In late October, I made a trip to New Mexico to shoot the dunes at White Sands National Park. I hooked up with my close friend and photographer, Sandra Herber. www.flickr.com/photos/sandraherber/ We were at White Sands four days, made eight excursions into the dunes, hiked over 20 miles and shot close to 2,000 photos between us.

We are posting our images at the same time and it will be interesting to see how we handled being in the same locations together. For safety reasons and for the fun of it, we hiked the dunes together, sometimes pointing our lenses in the same direction, other times wandering apart. I am sure we got some similar shots, but it will be interesting to see those that are different as we each have our own way of looking at things, as well as having different focal length coverage. Then there is the processing aspect.

To say White Sands is magical is an understatement. As photographers, we talk about the light, emphasize the light, are critical about the light. The dunes at White Sands react in amazing ways to the change in light, offering different looks, revealing various personalities. It is this diversity of the dunes that I wanted to capture then, and present here now.

To reach Corniglia, it is necessary to climb the Lardarina, a long brick flight of steps composed of 33 flights with 382 steps or, otherwise follow a vehicular road that, from the station, leads to the village. Sometimes a small bus runs up and down here.

Except for the road which leads to the village, none of the streets in Corniglia can carry vehicle traffic, everything must be done on foot. This image shows one of the streets and how narrow it is. Many stores have merchandise set up in the streets for display.

We all love photography judges who give us first place, but when our photos slide past unnoticed, well, the judges are simply Philistines. Can't they recognise our brilliance!

There is a part of me that would prefer not to judge photography competitions because all I can offer is a subjective opinion. And often I am asked to provide a comment or suggestion as to how a photograph could be improved or strengthened. Essentially I am being asked how I would have photographed or presented the image to get a higher score. Should I be doing this?

Recently, I listened to judges discuss one of my prints which had a grainy, black and white finish. One said that he didn't know why I had applied the finish as it wasn't something he would have done – and maybe it would be better without the finish.

This set me thinking: does this judge mean that unless I create photographs the way he does, he won't give me a high score? And if this judge doesn't like grainy black and whites, does that mean he will never score such entries highly?

To be fair to the judge in question, he was trying to be helpful by making a suggestion as to how the image could be improved.

So let me give another example. I am not a big fan of HDR (High Dynamic Range) photographs, but I gave an HDR photograph first place in a competition not so long ago. Personally, subjectively, I didn't like the photograph much, but as an example of its kind, it was superlative.

I think that from time to time, judges have to step aside from their biases and judge the photograph as an example of its kind. Perhaps the judge looking at my photo should have assessed it on the basis that the entrant chose to submit a grainy black and white print: was this a good or bad example of its kind?

So, what's different when I'm critiquing a photograph that I think could be improved? For instance, I find a white sky incredibly distracting, so I suggest that the photographer could have found a different camera angle, crop the image, or somehow darken down the sky to improve it. What's the difference between this advice and suggesting that a photograph would be better if it wasn't a grainy black and white?

Context.

In the first situation, the judge seemed to acknowledge that the underlying technique was good, it was the final finish he didn't like. He didn't say the finish was over done or poorly handled, just that it wasn't necessary. So perhaps he didn't judge what had been presented, rather he judged what hadn't been presented.

In the second situation, the base photograph with the bright sky was not communicating correctly and a different approach was required. (In my opinion, I know.)

The difference is subtle and it's not always possible for a judge to know if an entrant is investigating a genre of photography or just doesn't know any better. That's the problem with judges – and for judges. Often we just don't know.

So while a part of me doesn't like judging, on the other hand it's something I greatly enjoy. I love being exposed to different styles of work and new ideas. It is incredibly inspirational and so are photo competitions. Of course, you probably don't expect me to say anything different. Our inaugural International Landscape Photographer of the Year Award has had around 2000 entries, but if you missed out, we'll be announcing our annual Better Photography Photograph of the Year Award later this month!

So, the problem with judges is what?

I have been posting a few photos from the American Southwest recently, probably due to the fact that I will be visiting there in early March. No trip to Utah is complete without stopping by Monument Valley on the Arizona-Utah border. Located in the northwestern portion of Navajo Nation, it is a place of great landscapes that have appeared in countless westerns and commercials. It has even been featured in a Metallica music video. The official name of the park is Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, which is the equivalent of an American National Park.

There are many rock formations that, over the years, have been given names either by the Navajo or early settlers to the area. Many of the rock formations can be seen from the 17-mile dirt road that visitors to the park can drive for a daily fee. To get off of the road and see some of the lesser-known formations, the hiring of a Navajo guide is necessary. The arch in this photo is one of those off-road formations. I have been told it is known as Keyhole Arch, but have also heard it called Pottery Arch. Regardless of its name, the view through the center of it is pretty cool.

Bathrooms, which were locked for your safety behind a long closed restaurant in the desert that caught on fire a few years ago. Back in the day if you wanted to use the bathroom you would have to ask for the key (outside bathrooms) and so the key would not get stolen they would attach the key to a club, baseball bat, block of wood or anything that was large enough it wouldn't fit in your pocket.

Night, near full moon, 120 second exposure, handheld light producing device set to pink, blue & a shot of white under heavy cloud cover.

I woke up a couple mornings ago and discovered the Ambien-induced rainbow dandelion I had edited the night before. I'm a very straight-forward, follow-the-rules, think-inside-the-box sort of person. Some times I think it must be fun to be a bit freer.

HWF (Happy Website Friday) for me today. I launched my site www.russcherfotografie.nl Yihaaa. So if you don't mind just take a look, a lot of my Flickr pictures also can be found here :-))

kade learned how to wink, unfortunately i did not catch him doing it when he thought it was necessary to also stick out his tongue.

watch out ladies, that look is a killa

My sole reason for the four mile round walk (apart from the very necessary exercise of course) was to capture the pair of large logo Tractors on the tyre turning maintenance trip but thought I had bummed out when a solid blanket of cloud steamed in from the west half an hour before it was due. So it was complete astonishment that I managed to get this in full sun just a minute after the cloud had miraculously started melting away.

Sometimes it works great and sometimes it drives me crazy when the tape gets stuck. This annoying contraption is definitely a necessary evil when moving house!

Sorry if I do not comment on your wonderful comments, I'm so busy packing up the house. I'll be back later in the year!

Thanks for all your comments and faves, much appreciated as

always.

shot some work for natalias modeling port today! was tons of fun for sure, but generally im just so glad to have met this girl. she spent much of the day talking about how she wants to help people, and give back... how she wants to be a model and gain real influence to change the world. she came to america from columbia, and knows a thing or two about how to be grateful for having food and shelter. shes really a beautiful person inside and out, and that makes a true model in my opinion.

annnnnyway, if you wanna book me to shoot your port, send an email on over to karrah.kobus@gmail.com. sessions with 3 looks are $250, and ill have 2 separate and full examples of these types of shoots up on my client website within a few days.

skype editing sessions start sept. 18th. first days have already been filling up, so also contact me via email if you are interested in one of these!

Body language, facial expression, and the eyes indicate this chocolate lab is none too happy about participating in the Ciderfest Parade in Marcus, WA.

Do I really need these? I'm becoming a hoarder. A doll hoarder. Anyways, on the topic of MH, I hope they make a Scaris Cleo and Lagoona (maybe they'll be part of another 5pack?). Hmmm...

Hunting is necessary for some indigenous peoples for food, and it's also sometimes required for wildlife management to control over populations of certain species. Sports involve competition between two consenting individuals or teams and usually a referee. Sport hunters shoot animals with rifles, shotguns, and bows and arrows—weapons that no animal has any chance of outrunning or fighting. Even when hunters obey laws and kill “free-range” animals, they always have an unfair advantage.
