Hello my friends,

I hope this image finds you well. I have taken a long absence from social media and photography. It has been necessary for my growth, my faith, my family... So many changes have happened over the course of a year it's hard to think of writing them all down. Perhaps the biggest and hardest change was the sudden and absolutely unexpected loss of my younger sister in May. Providence was 27 years young and left behind a devastated husband and two babies who are still asking where their Mama went. If you've been my friend for awhile you know that I lost another sister to leukemia in 2010 at the young age of 20. It wasn't any easier this time around... but I suppose it never is. I was extremely close to both of them and it's hard to wrap my mind around the fact that they are both gone so young and yet I am here...

Photography has always been something I've found comfort in. A way to express what words or tears fall short in. But in the wake of so much change in circumstances, grief, I took a complete leave from my business and my creative ventures. It was a necessary part of survival to me. I've learned a lot this year. I realized that today is really all we have. Tomorrow is never promised. That realization made me take my life more serious, to treasure the people and the moments that are in front of me right now. I have spent the last several months pouring into my family, my faith and into my real life. My time and who I spend it with is precious. And I took that for granted for too long. :(

I'm sorry for such a serious message. My photography these days has picked up again although mostly for my own enjoyment. I've totally shut down my business for now and that seems to be what's best at present at least. My shooting has been of my children, people I care about, places that bring me joy... I have printed more of my work for myself, books to look at, pictures on the wall, even blankets. Slowly but surely my creativity is gaining pace again, I'm sure of it.:)

On another note, this my sweet Liat. She is walking, no running - these days. She is my precious muse and I never tire of photographing her adventures.

I've missed you all. I know that I am not the only one who has been affected by change, loss, grief in the last year or so. I pray my dearest friends here are safe and I appreciate you being here and taking the time to read my sporadic messages.

I love you friends.

xx

Without doubt he is the boss of the house and he doesn't appreciate much this pretty, gentle look!

But he promised that he'd do anything to be grateful for the greatest gift he received this year! If you wish to know the beautiful news:

The New Church of Son Servera - Església Nova in Catalan- is an unfinished Neo-Gothic church in Son Servera, Mallorca, Spain, intended for Catholic worship and cultural activities.

The construction works began in 1905 by the architect Juan Rubió Bellver (1870-1952), collaborator of Antoni Gaudí (1852-1926), who was also in charge of finding the necessary financing. However, the works had to be suspended in 1929 due to economic problems. Subsequently, conservation works were carried out between 1994 and 1995 and various complementary works in 2007 and 2008.

As a way to cope with circumstances beyond my control, survive and work to keep fighting for life I decided to try to take at least one photo (or more) each day. I call this “a photo (or more) a day.” Practicing this form of therapeutic photography helps me work to focus on the present moment, gives me something familiar and enjoyable to focus on as I use photography skills that have become like second-nature to me and being able to view the images I capture helps me recall what I was thinking, feeling and noticing at the moment when I created the photos. More of the photos from this series can be seen on my Instagram account

I may not always have the energy, time or capacity to share photos from this series—especially with the very challenging circumstances my family and I are experiencing—and will do my best to continue taking a photo (or more) a day even if I’m not able to share.

If you would like to support my work and my family, one way you can do so is by ordering my zines:

I have difficulty identifying hawks in flight at a far distance, but there is little doubt about a powerful hawk flying low across a field, with a white patch on the rump...Northern Harrier.

This hawk was seen at a VERY far distance, so it was necessary to crop the picture. Not the sharpest of shots but still with some feather detail and motion blur. Happy to have gotten it for Life Bird Photograph #236.

a walk all around the giant's causeway in Northern Ireland, still part of UK. The Giant's Causeway (Irish: Clochán an Aifir) is an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic fissure eruption. It is located in County Antrim on the north coast of Northern Ireland, about three miles (4.8 km) northeast of the town of Bushmills.

It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986 and a national nature reserve by the Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland in 1987. In a 2005 poll of Radio Times readers, the Giant's Causeway was named the fourth-greatest natural wonder in the United Kingdom.

The tops of the columns form stepping stones that lead from the cliff foot and disappear under the sea. Most of the columns are hexagonal, although some have four, five, seven, or eight sides. The tallest are about 12 metres (39 ft) high, and the solidified lava in the cliffs is 28 metres (92 ft) thick in places.

Much of the Giant's Causeway and Causeway Coast World Heritage Site is owned and managed by the National Trust. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Northern Ireland, receiving over 998,000 visitors in 2019. Access to the Giant's Causeway is free of charge: it is not necessary to go via the visitor centre, which charges a fee. The remainder of the site is owned by the Crown Estate and several private landowners. Wikipedia

Cast iron panelled facade of "Kraton 230", a multifunctional building, part of the former Rotterdam Schiecentrale power plant.

From: Mei-arch-eu: Kraton 230 cast iron facade panels

This former electric power plant and the many large ships that used to moor here, are reflected in the building’s large scale and rough, bold image. In 2001 the idea came up of cladding the building in rusting cast iron panels. Because this was a new and unknown technique at the time, extensive research of the fabrication process was necessary. For example, first a mock-up was developed to test and observe the rusting process..

Quarantined to only leave my house when absolutely necessary or to take a walk. I have reverted to watching the people walk by my house. I hope I can find some more time to sit on the front porch with camera in hand a wait for opportunities to walk on by.

Stay safe everyone and enjoy walks like these two are.

I never get good light in Death Valley. This is one of those things we deal with, doing what we do. It's what makes multiple trips possible and necessary. I dragged my feet going to this place for so long that once I finally went there was no other place I'd rather be. There's something to the desert that is entrancing. The solitude is deafening and the sense of scarcity is overwhelming. But, in the same way that staring out into the ocean is relaxing, so is staring out into the desert. It's the endless nothingness. The no real focal point to fixate on that lets the mind be at ease. All the times spent staring at a screen twelve inches from our faces, with our eyes focusing tightly, the tensionless feeling of setting our gaze to infinity really sets the mind at ease.

optics from soviet night vision device. it's allegedly helios-40 in different corpus with additional elongated rear element making the frame smaller than full and adding weird character, quite different than helios has. rear element is scary close few mm from sony a7 sensor. if you want sharpness to infinity (not great) and in close up , helicoid is necessary because provided parody of focus ring is very short. the overall construction doesn't make a remotely reliable impression. chromatic aberration is horrible, so bw only, perhaps coating is different than h40 had, suited for night vision. in a sunny summer day it's 1-2 stops too fast. a tendency of banding. sharpness is very good for f1.2, but only focus zoom more or less secures it where planned. the washed out blur and weird highlights are excellent. one of my favorite lenses now.

When I see swallows or swifts I often find myself fantasizing about photographing them in flight. This was my first opportunity to photograph bank swallows in good light. Great early morning or evening light is a necessary ingredient to success for such flight shots.

In the same area I also had juvenile tree swallows, and at least one juvenile purple martin, both which have similar color schemes to the bank swallow.

Navigation of the vegetation was necessary to get the best angle. A bit of the graffiti in the house is visible in the entrance on the picture to the right.

The Castillo de El Toston is located in the north of Fuerteventura, in the town of El Cotillo, and like most buildings in the Canary Islands, the construction of the Castillo del Toston began after the Castilian arrival.

Most of the defensive architecture of the Canary Archipelago dates from the 15th century, the time of the Spanish Conquest, and functioned as coastal protection against attacks by pirates and barbarians from North Africa, France and Great Britain. Its construction, however, dates back to 1700 (18th century), since the old defensive castle called Rico Roque, built by the conqueror Jean de Bethencourt, existed on the same site. This fortification was created to defend the port of El Cotillo, which at that time had gained great importance as a natural port in the trade of orchilla, cereals and livestock. It was commissioned by the Captain General of the Canary Islands to the engineer D. Claudio de L'Isle and received the name of Torre de Nuestra Señora del Pilar y San Miguel.

It is built in stone, extracted from a cave in the area, has a circular base and could accommodate 12 men. In its structure a total of 3 cannons could be installed, which were located in the upper part of the castle, while in the lower part the gunpowder deposit necessary to activate the cannons was kept. At present, the castle serves as a center for various exhibitions.

At its feet is Piedra Playa, and a few kilometers to the south is the Faro del Tostón lighthouse, which currently houses a Fishing Museum.

Today I will answer the most popular questions. And if you do not find your question in the list, write in the comments 💬 I will be happy to answer everyone.

Where is the best place to hold a photo shoot?

Places for a photo shoot are always discussed and selected exclusively from your wishes. For bad weather, you can always use a photo studio.

Do you

give clothes for a photo shoot?

I do not provide clothing, but I can help you choose the necessary option.

We are not models, do you help on the shoot?

Of course😉. I always tell you how best to put your foot, hand, and where to look after all. You don't have to worry. The main task for you is to relax, and I will also help you with this.

When will we get our photos?

It all depends on the workload of me, the photographer. But usually I always say срок when the photos are ready.

27-December-2024

The Bora/Bura wind is katabatic, but generally does not have pronounced "Foehnizing" characteristics, as instead the winds falling from the Alps (Foehn) or from the Rocky Mountains (Chinook).

This is also evident from the absence of the opposite phenomenon above and behind the mountain range, namely the "stau", which is a necessary condition for the Foehn.

In any case, when the Bora blows for a long time and intensely, in clearly anticyclonic conditions, the air tends to dry out along the entire column and from the low "stau" clouds (which is a necessary condition for the Foehn, but not sufficient), that usually envelop the peaks of the Maritime Dinaric Alps with this wind, we move to sporadic formations of lenticular clouds that exploit the little humidity left by condensing at high altitudes above the highest peaks where there is an upwelling of currents that condense when they meet the colder ones at the top.

They form layer upon layer in the same position which is necessarily orographic and remain stationary until they dissolve, which occurs with the cessation or change of wind.

Here the humidity is very low and the lenticular cloud has only 2 or 3 layers, in precarious equilibrium.

The dry air of the anticyclonic bora (and progressively milder) fits well with the "false desert" environment of Stara Baška.

I say "false" because the precipitations are actually quite high (1100-1200mm or l/m2 per year) and well distributed throughout the year (therefore not responding to the classic Mediterranean canons with precipitations concentrated in the cold semester and almost nothing in the hot one), as in the other areas of the North-Eastern Adriatic, with relatively cold winters (some very cold, now memories of the last century) and hot summers, very hot in the last 30 years, but with the presence of frequent thunderstorms, which instead are no longer present in the south in midsummer.

The desert/lunar type environment is due to the poor, rocky soil, composed in particular of limestone and silica, as well as the frequent and intense presence of the bora/bura wind that does not allow the accumulation of humus on these exposed lands and therefore not by drought conditions, which are only casual and temporary at this latitude and geo-orographic position.

The road that leads to the hamlet is definitely spectacular.

Wikipedia: The Cinque Terre (Italian pronunciation: [ˌtʃinkwe ˈtɛrːe]) is a rugged portion of coast on the Italian Riviera. It is in the Liguria region of Italy, to the west of the city of La Spezia. "The Five Lands" is composed of five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Over the centuries, people have carefully built terraces on the rugged, steep landscape right up to the cliffs that overlook the sea. Part of its charm is the lack of visible corporate development. Paths, trains and boats connect the villages, and cars cannot reach them from the outside. The Cinque Terre area is a very popular tourist destination. Tourist attractions in the region include a famous walking trail between Manarola and Riomaggiore (called Via dell'Amore, "Love's Trail") and hiking trails in the hills and vineyards above the town.

Corniglia is a frazione ("fraction") of the commune of Vernazza in the province of La Spezia, Liguria, northern Italy. Unlike the other localities of the Cinque Terre, Corniglia is not directly adjacent to the sea. Instead, it is on the top of a promontory about 100 metres high, surrounded on three sides by vineyards and terraces and the fourth side descends steeply to the sea. To reach Corniglia, it is necessary to climb the Lardarina, a long brick flight of steps composed of 33 flights with 382 steps or, otherwise follow a vehicular road that, from the station, leads to the village. Sometimes a small bus runs up and down here. The village stretches along the main road, Fieschi Road, and the houses have one side facing this road and the other facing the sea. Corniglia is characterised by narrow roads and a terrace obtained in the rock from which all other four Cinque Terre's villages, two on one side and two on the other, can be seen. The town planning structure presents also original characteristics compared to those of the other villages: the houses are lower set, and only more recently higher, similar to those of the villages of the hinterland. Corniglia is mentioned in a famous novella of Giovanni Boccaccio's Decameron and in the novel The Invisible Circus by Jennifer Egan. The origin of the village dates back to the Roman Age as testified by the name, which finds its roots in Gens Cornelia, the Roman family to whom the land belonged. In the Middle Ages it was a possession of the counts of Lavagna, the lords of Carpena and of Luni. In 1254 Pope Innocent IV gave it to Nicolò Fieschi, who held it until 1276, when the village was acquired by the Republic of Genoa.

Today is the start of a new law in England. Cats have to be micro-chipped so they can be identified & their owners contacted if necessary. Obviously Bella is law-abiding!

Not everyone agrees with the new law. But I am happy that cats can be returned to their homes if found, potential owners will know that a cat doesn’t have an owner so it can be adopted & if the worst happens an owner can be notified. Yes, chips & registrations can be expensive - but charities & some vets don’t charge for this, especially when it’s done as part of the neutering & vaccination routine with a young cat. The chip takes only seconds to insert - years ago I held Charlie while his was replaced & he just gave one squeak! Bella already had her chip when I adopted her, so I only had to complete a form to give her new address & my contact details.

Seasonal colours - happy Caturday.

I found this ant on the floor in my house – a problem that required immediate remediation as it wasn’t the only one. Before taking the necessary pest control measures, I figured I could utilize one of these ants for a photograph, and set it aside for a class I was teaching that evening. This image was shot live during a virtual workshop in the summer of 2020!

I had a multi-camera setup including my Lumix S1H illustrating the scene and in real-time showcasing how small changes to lighting, subject alignment, focus etc. all could have dramatic impacts on the image. I’d normally shoot an image like this with the S1R, but the video-centric S1H is no slouch for taking stills either. The lens was the Canon MP-E 65mm F/2.8 1x-5x macro lens, a workhorse I have been using for over a decade.

The flower petals were held in place just out of frame by a “third hand tool”, and the droplets were placed with a hypodermic needle. The lighting was simple: a single LED flashlight off on the right side. Once the shot as you see it was established, the ant entered the frame. By moving a small stick near the ant, it would climb the stick and I was able to place it on the water droplets. Plenty of trial and error here, as ants are rarely cooperative actors.

The image of the ant is a single frame, but the entire scene is a focus stack of a few images to increase the depth of field across the flower petals. It could be an advantage to shoot a focus stack series before adding the element of chaos, and sorting it out later.

Is the image perfect? No. I don’t like the middle lower droplet not having a perfect reflection. If the camera was slightly lower, you’d see this improved. The camera was in the perfect position, but alas the petals droop over time, even a short few seconds can make a big difference. Once the ant is in play, you no longer have time for such adjustments.

I like how the droplet connecting the two petals has a slightly warped refraction due to its shape not being spherical, even though I wish the ant was in a slightly more presentable or also interacting with the droplet. I didn’t share this image last year as all available time was being spent on my book – which is now shipping! If you haven’t taken a look at it yet, it’ll show you exactly how to set up images just like this: skycrystals.ca/product/pre-order-macro-photography-the-un...

With an ex - MoPac standard cab 40 that some how escaped the wye in Pontiac leading on CN A451, I took advantage of having to go to control point Cedar at the start of the work day and decided to make the climb on our new cantilever signal on the east end of the plant to get a bird's eye view of the old Screaming Eagle over the Red Cedar River. Why buy a drone when I can climb? Unfortunately not everyone has my access, all the more reason to utilize and share with the world.

Panagia Pelekiti(rusticated): The "Queen" of Agrafa

It is one of the monasteries that stand out. The landscape, architecture, history make the Holy Monastery of Panayia Pelekiti a pilgrimage center. It is built above the artificial lake Plastira in Karditsa and is administratively subordinated to the Cathedral of Fanariers. According to the latest historical data, it was built about five centuries ago on a steep rocky slope of Agrafa, at an altitude of 1,400 meters, northwest of Karitsa village.

The history of the Holy Monastery of Panagia Pelekiti has been linked to the course of the region, which participated in all the struggles of the Nation. During the revolution of 1821 Karitsa was destroyed by the Turks, while in 1943 by the Germans. The monks of the monastery were among the protagonists in the liberation of Karitsa from the Turks, creating a different relationship with the inhabitants.

Since its founding, the monastery has dominated the ecclesiastical things of the region since it was recognized as a cruciform in 1606 by the Ecumenical Patriarch Raffael II.

Pelekiti was named as its cells were created in the rocks on four levels, where the monks lived and functioned the monastery, while there was even a hidden school.

Porphyrios

According to Fotis Kerassiotis, who has dealt with the history of the monastery, it was probably founded at the end of the 15th century by the Spiritual Porphyry and was completed in 1529 in its present form by the new Omar Martyr Damianos, who is described as a "builder" In two frescoes. The monastery was hagiographed in the middle of the 17th century and has two temples, the Church of the Ascension of Christ and the Church of Panagia Faneromeni (the Catholic).

The Katholikon is the central and most ancient temple, devoted to Ascension of the Lord. It is a one-aisled basilica with a narthex, sheltered by a cylindrical arch, with a reinforcement bow in the middle. According to a relevant inscription inside the temple, it was painted in 1654 by hagiographers Ioannis, Nicholas Priest and Iacob Ieromonas.

The second temple is dedicated to Panagia Faneromeni. It is of the Athonian style, with dome and side dances, without internal columns. The frescoes, as indicated by a relevant inscription above the entrance door, were discovered in 1666. They were painted in 1674 by the icon-painter Iakovos and his son Dimitrios.

Known is the small but miraculous icon of Panagia Pelekiti, in which the Virgin Mary is painted with Christ in her arms. The picture is unfortunately stolen and sought to be returned to its natural place, the monastery. Evrytanas historian Panos Vassiliou wrote in 1929: "In addition to the excellent Byzantine art in frescoes, there is an icon (oil painting 0,04x0,03) of the Virgin Mary with Christ in her arms, a work of Raphael art. It is not explained how this tiny icon, which is considered as an old but miraculous icon, was found here. It dates back to 1654.

The style reminiscent of the Christ of the Protaton of Mount Athos, the well-known work of the Full Moon. In fact, this icon was embellished with 20 precious stones, of which 16 were removed from ... strangers, of course not to mention to anyone, as today, a police record. There are still, fortunately, 4 red-colored petals in its silver-plated casing, which is 0.21 x 0.23 m in size and carved on it with carved angels. An immense kindness is painted on the smiling face of Our Lady, whose child presents something truly divine and admirable for his joyful expressiveness. This magnificent icon of Virgin Mary Pelekite reminds Renaissance. "

The monastery, due to its elaborate construction and its glorious history, has been declared "Historic Preserved Monument". Unfortunately, however, the wealth of ecclesiastical heirlooms and its rare library are scarcely preserved today.

The monastery celebrates on August 15, the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. In recent years, after significant initiatives by local actors and other actors, the necessary money has been found and the monastery has been renovated and exploited, gathering crowds of pilgrims from all over Greece.

When the monks moved the border in 1831

The following incident is also impressed: After the Greek State was founded in 1831, Karytsa (the village under the monastery) and Belekomytis were found outside the Greek border because they were established on the river Karytsiotis, and these two villages are afterwards River. Then the monks, along with the inhabitants of the two villages, arbitrarily moved the borders and placed them after the monastery, on the plateau of Karamanolis.

I used the prompt: A beautiful Woman cornered by the hat and the fish in a surreal landscape as a tree with a beautiful face and fashionable shoes next to a compliment of necessary accoutrements.

A bit of hand painting.
