Table Lamp with Nightlight
1930s Art Moderne, Modernist, Machine Aesthetic Design. Could be attributed to designer Gilbert Rohde who designed lamps for this company in the 1930s.
He designed over 35 lamps for this company and many were not documented.
Chrome (or Nickle) Plated with a Cream-colored Milk Glass Center.
Original Cloth Cord. Original Bakelight? plastic On/Off switch for the nightlight.
Adjustable shade holder with original finial.
Dimensions: 20 inches to 21 1/2 inches high; 4 1/2 diameter at the base. 9 inches high to the top of the glass/chrome base.
Weight: About 3 pounds, 14 ounces on a Postal Scale.
Condition: Mint to Very Good. All original parts (except for the shape) appear intact and in working order, including the pull chains and switch. All lamp sockets are in working order. I have not tried to clean the chrome---appears to have some minor surface issues (see photographs). Heavy base has a dull, matte finish as opposed to the chrome, banded rings at the top and the bottom of the glass center section. Original cords and interior fittings. One interior area seems to have been covered in electrical tape for safety.

Designed by the German Architect Stephan Braunfels, the Pinakothek der Moderne was inaugurated in September 2002 after seven years of construction. The rectilinear facade, dominated by white and grey concrete, is interrupted by large windows and highrising columns, the latter supporting the extensive canopied roof. Each of the four corners of the building, connected by a central rotunda, is dedicated to a special collection. The Museum is thus divided into Art (Kunst), Architecture (Architektur), Design (Design) and Works on Paper (Graphik).
I've long admired the Ocean Park Motel, San Francisco's very first motor lodge, built in 1937. Located a block from Ocean Beach and the Pacific Ocean, the Ocean Park Motel remains wonderfully untouched by the passage of time. It's a clean, friendly place with plenty of historic character.

My shoemaker has his abide here, a nice little road hidden between St. Lazare, the rue d'Amsterdam and the rue de Londres. His shop is named Cordonnerie Moderne, but there's nothing modern about it; my brogues get their soles attached by hand, with manual braids.
When I was still working in the Rue de Londres, 50 meters from here, I used to have lunch with my collegues in the Chope St Lazare, the café next to the shoemaker. Gilbert, the patron of La Chope used to say that the shoemaker had a "méchant charactér, mais ç'est un bon artisan". I don't fully agree, the guy is a bit strange, but nice and always recognizes me when I walk in. He's a very good artisan though, wouldn't dream of bringing my shoes elsewhere.

Update 29/03/2009: He's gone. I went over a couple of days ago, with two pairs that needed fixing. The board above the door is still there, but the restaurant has expanded into the shop, and the cobbler has gone, with his interior and his machinery. He'll be missed. And I need a new shoemaker now.

The Art Moderne Style Greyhound station in Evansville, Indiana, designed by William S. Arrasmith, was constructed in 1939. The Greyhound vacated the station in 2007. The City of Evansville acquired the building and donated it to Indiana Landmark, a nonprofit preservation organization. In 2016, the Cunningham Restaurant Group (Michael Cunningham) leased the building and opened Bru Burger, an upscale restaurant. The area of the building where buses arrived and departed was converted to an outside diner area. The former Evansville Greyhound bus station is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
