There was also a subway from the railway station so passengers had a covered journey from Victoria all the way to Paris. The modern concept of a purpose designed airport with proper passenger management organised. The genius concept of Morris Jackaman with architects Hoar, Marlow and Lovett. Opened in 1936.

Endlich habe ich im Zwinger die Alten Meister bewundert und mir einige Tage später im Albertinum auch die Neuen Meister zu Gemüte geführt. Nachdem ich dann per Kombiticket auch noch gleich nebenan in die Sonderausstellung "Im Netzwerk der Moderne" flüchtete [des Regens wegen], war ich danach "voll zu". Gerade die letzte Ausstellung war wegen ihrer Vielseitigkeit der gezeigten Werke und ihrer thematischen Zuordnung eine klare Überforderung für mich Kunstbanausen, ohne Vorbereitung allemal. Schließlich war ich in den Stunden davor zwischen Romantik und Impressionismus unterwegs gewesen und traf nun, schon leicht ermattet, im Lipsiusbau, auf Kirchner, Kandinsky, Klee, Miró und viele andere bekannte Künstler des 20. Jahrhunderts. Immerhin reichten die auf mich einwirkenden Impulse für einen kurzfristigen Kreativitätsschub meinerseits . . . ein Elbeflutenpixelaquarell der ganz modernen Kunst sozusagen . . .
Inwa: Aussi appelé Innwa anciennement Ava, et parfois Ainwa est une ville du Myanmar situé juste au sud de Amarapura sur le fleuve Irrawaddy. Son titre officiel est Ratanapura ce qui signifie la ville des pierres précieuses en pali. Le nom Innwa signifie embouchure du lac, qui vient de "in", lac, et «wa», bouche. Connu sous le nom d'Ava aux Britanniques et A-wa en birman, il a évolué à son nom moderne Inwa.
Inwa a été capitale de la Birmanie de 1364-1841 et fondée par le roi Thadominbya sur une île artificielle au confluent de l'Irrawaddy et de la Myitnge. L'île artificielle a été créée en creusant un canal reliant les deux fleuves. Avant cela, Sagaing était la capitale, mais après que Sagaing ait tombé aux mains des Shan, la Cour s’est déplacée de l’autre coté du fleuve à Ava. Les rois d'Ava ont travaillé à restaurer la suprématie birmane, désintégrée après l'effondrement de l'Empire de Bagan fondé par le roi Anawrahta en 1057. Le Royaume n'avait pas de frontières facilement défendables et a été envahie par les Shan en 1527. En 1555, Ava tombe aux mains du Royaume birman du sud de Taungoo, ce qui a conduit à la fondation du Second Empire par le roi Tabinshwehti, mais en 1636, le roi de Taungoo déplace sa capitale à Ava. En 1752, les Mons se révoltent contre la domination birmane et saccagent Ava. Quelques années plus tard, le fondateur de la nouvelle dynastie Konbaung et du troisième empire birman, Alaungpaya, écrase la révolte Mon, et après une période à Shwebo, il a rétabli la capitale à Ava.
Après la conquête britannique de la Basse-Birmanie après la Seconde Guerre anglo-birmane (1852-1853), la Haute-Birmanie était communément appelée le royaume d'Ava ou la Cour d'Ava. Pendant le règne du roi Bodawpaya (littéralement Lord Royal grand-père, de 1781 à 1819), la capitale fut transférée à Amarapura, tout près. Cependant, son successeur, le roi Bagyidaw (littéralement Oncle Royal Aîné, 1819-1837), déplace la Cour de nouveau à Ava en 1823. Quand un terrible tremblement de terre cause d'importants dégâts en 1841, Ava est finalement abandonnée pour Amarapura. Il reste peu de l'ancienne capitale aujourd'hui en raison d’un tremblement de terre en 1939 pendant lequel la plupart des palais de Ava ont été détruits.

It was capital of Burma from 1364-1841 and founded by King Thadominbya on an artificial island at the confluence of the Ayeyarwady and the Myitnge. The artificial island has created by digging a canal linking the two rivers. Prior to this, Sagaing had been capital, but after Sagaing fell to the Shan, the court moved across the river to Ava. The kings of Ava set about restoring Burmese supremacy, which had disintegrated after the collapse of Pagan to the Empire founded by King Anawrahta in 1057. The kingdom lacked easily defensible borders, however, and was overrun by the Shan in 1527. In 1555, Ava fell to the southern Burmese Kingdom of Taungoo which led to the founding of the Second Burmese Empire by King Tabinshwehti, but in 1636, the king of Taungoo relocated his own capital to Ava. In 1752, the Mon revolted against Burmese rule and sacked Ava. A couple of years later, the founder of the new Konbaung Dynasty and the Third Burmese Empire, Alaungpaya, crushed the Mon revolt, and after a period with Shwebo as his capital, re-established the court in Ava.
Following the British conquest of Lower Burma after the Second Anglo-Burmese War (1852-53), Upper Burma was commonly called the Kingdom of Ava or the Court of Ava. During the reign of King Bodawpaya (literally Lord Royal Grandfather, 1781-1819), the capital was moved to nearby Amarapura. However, his successor, King Bagyidaw (literally Royal Elder Uncle, 1819-1837), moved the Court back to Ava in 1823. When a tremendous earthquake caused extensive damage in 1841, Ava was finally abandoned for Amarapura. Little remains of the ancient capital today because of the earthquake that happened in 1939 when most of the palaces in Ava were destroyed.

I really liked the strong horizontal lines on this Streamline Moderne building along Richmond, west of Spadina. I loved the green door, but the rest of the colour didn't add much. I also like the long shadows around the door.

Table Lamp with Nightlight
1930s Art Moderne, Modernist, Machine Aesthetic Design. Could be attributed to designer Gilbert Rohde who designed lamps for this company in the 1930s.
He designed over 35 lamps for this company and many were not documented.
Chrome (or Nickle) Plated with a Cream-colored Milk Glass Center.
Original Cloth Cord. Original Bakelight? plastic On/Off switch for the nightlight.
Adjustable shade holder with original finial.
Dimensions: 20 inches to 21 1/2 inches high; 4 1/2 diameter at the base. 9 inches high to the top of the glass/chrome base.
Weight: About 3 pounds, 14 ounces on a Postal Scale.
Condition: Mint to Very Good. All original parts (except for the shape) appear intact and in working order, including the pull chains and switch. All lamp sockets are in working order. I have not tried to clean the chrome---appears to have some minor surface issues (see photographs). Heavy base has a dull, matte finish as opposed to the chrome, banded rings at the top and the bottom of the glass center section. Original cords and interior fittings. One interior area seems to have been covered in electrical tape for safety.

Outside our front door of our 1930 Moderne Streamline home, you see to the right the original door bell. Very cool. Needs some cleaing up.
My shoemaker has his abide here, a nice little road hidden between St. Lazare, the rue d'Amsterdam and the rue de Londres. His shop is named Cordonnerie Moderne, but there's nothing modern about it; my brogues get their soles attached by hand, with manual braids.
When I was still working in the Rue de Londres, 50 meters from here, I used to have lunch with my collegues in the Chope St Lazare, the café next to the shoemaker. Gilbert, the patron of La Chope used to say that the shoemaker had a "méchant charactér, mais ç'est un bon artisan". I don't fully agree, the guy is a bit strange, but nice and always recognizes me when I walk in. He's a very good artisan though, wouldn't dream of bringing my shoes elsewhere.

Update 29/03/2009: He's gone. I went over a couple of days ago, with two pairs that needed fixing. The board above the door is still there, but the restaurant has expanded into the shop, and the cobbler has gone, with his interior and his machinery. He'll be missed. And I need a new shoemaker now.
