Opened in 1933, the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry houses a collection of artifacts focusing on technology, industry, and scientific concepts. The museum features 75 galleries containing 2,000 exhibits, as well as an Omni IMAX domed theater. The museum welcomes more than a million visitors annually, being among several major museums and cultural attractions that can be found along Chicago’s lakefront from Lincoln Park in the north to Jackson Park in the south, and is the last surviving significant structure from the 1893 Columbian Exposition.
The Pioneer Zephyr, a Streamline Moderne-style Streamliner Diesel Trainset, was manufactured by the Budd Company for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad in 1934, and remained in service until 1960. The trainset was the first Diesel-powered locomotive to enter regular service in the United States, and provided spacious, luxurious interior accommodations, as well as an ability to achieve high speeds. This Pioneer Zephyr was donated to the Museum of Science and Industry after leaving service in 1960, and was displayed outdoors with no protection from the weather until 1994, and subsequently was removed from the grounds and restored, before being placed into its present location underground during the construction of the museum's underground parking garage and lobby in 1998.
