Brown-headed Barbet Megalaima zeylanica

Also called as Small Green Barbet (Megalaima viridis), it is a species of barbet found in southern India. It is very similar to the more widespread Brown-headed Barbet (or Large Green Barbet) (Megalaima zeylanica) but this species has a distinctive supercilium and a broad white cheek stripe below the eye and is endemic to the forest areas of the Western Ghats and adjoining hills.

Like many other barbets of Asia, these are green, sit still and perch upright making them difficult to spot. During the breeding season which begins at the start of summer their calls become loud and constant especially in the mornings.

These birds are primary cavity nesters, chiseling out the trunk or a vertical branch of tree with a round entry hole. These barbets play an important role in forests as seed dispersal agents. They also visit the flowers of Bombax for nectar and may be involved in pollination.

These barbets are arboreal and will rarely visit the ground. They obtain most of the water they need from their fruit diet. When water is available in a tree hole, they will sometimes drink and bathe. Their fruit eating makes them a minor nuisance in fruit orchards although they are noted as having a beneficial effect in coffee plantations.

#428 - Brown-headed Barbet - Megalaima zeylanica (Mother carrying food to nestling)

Well this one with a Mouth Full of Berries is The White Cheeked Barbet............ View it in Full Screen Mode.........Nilgiris, 21 May 2015..................

The Story of this Shot - Well I had been observing a pair of White Cheeked Barbets excavating a hole in one of the trees nearby about two months back..... Well observed it for quite some time ....... It nested... laid an egg .. hatched...saw it feeding the hatch-ling (only one) from afar.........I did not approach the nest till I was certain the the hatch-ling was about to fly away..... I then got myself in a suitable position & then over the last three days sitting on a parapet wall 3 to 4 hrs at a time without any movement so that as not to alarm the birds away from the nest, but on a stopover to it, saw the pair of them flitting in to feed the little birdie..... Must have shot more than 600 to 700 shots over the last three days.... deleted most of them..... Well this one is OK..... Well, the little birdie flew away from the nest yesterday..... The mother to encourage it would part feed what it has in its beak & then go sit on a nearby branch with the balance of the grub in its beak calling out to the fledgeling........ It went on for quite some time yesterday till the young chick flew a good around 20 to 25 ft to it's mother........ Bye Bye young one..... Have a good life......

A little about the Bird - As per Wiki .......The White Cheeked Barbet or The Small Green Barbet (Megalaima viridis) is a species of barbet found in southern India. This species has a distinctive supercilium and a broad white cheek stripe below the eye and is endemic to the forest areas of the Western Ghats and adjoining hills.

Like many other barbets of Asia, these are green, sit still and perch upright making them difficult to spot. The head is brownish streaked with white, sometimes giving it a capped appearance. The bill is pale pinkish. The length is 165-185mm, head of 51-53mm and tail of 60-67mm. During the breeding season which begins at the start of summer their calls become loud and constant especially in the mornings. The call, a monotonous Kot-roo ... Kotroo... starting with an explosive trrr.

They are mainly frugivorous although they may sometimes eat insects and they use their bills to excavate nest cavities in trees.

Found this guy getting a drink and taking a bath in the hole in the tree. The burned tree is from a fire that took most of the mountain a few years ago.

It was a cloudy day with poor light and so I had to be really steady to get this fellow clearly. A commonly found bird in my backyard often seen feasting on the guava growing in the courtyard.

*花和尚,五色鳥的別名。此鳥頭與喉部,長有黃、紅、藍、黑色羽毛,身體則為翠綠色,因此稱為五色鳥。而叫聲像是和尚敲打木魚的聲音,所以又稱花和尚。另外,在台灣,五色鳥也被稱為國母鳥。

Shot at Jim Corbett Tiger Reserve;

The Brown-headed Barbet or Large Green Barbet[1] (Megalaima zeylanica) is an Asian barbet. Barbets and toucans are a group of near passerine birds with a worldwide tropical distribution. The barbets get their name from the bristles which fringe their heavy bills.

The Brown-headed Barbet is a resident breeder in India and Sri Lanka. It is an arboreal species of gardens and wooded country which eats fruit and insects. It nests in a tree hole, laying 2-4 eggs.

This is a relatively large barbet at 27 cm. It is a plump bird, with a short neck, large head and short tail.

The adult has a streaked brown head, neck and breast, with a yellow eye patch. The rest of the plumage is green. The bill is thick and red. Sexes are similar.

The White-cheeked Barbet largely replaces this species in the Western Ghats and hilly parts of southern peninsular India although both species may occur in many places. The calls of this species is similar but the white cheek patch is distinctive.

The call is a repetitive kutroo…kutroo…kutroo. Others take up the call when one starts. Somewhat silent in the winter.
