Biological Name- Megalaima haemacephala

Common Name-Coppersmith Barbet or Crimson-breasted Barbet

Bengali Name- Basanta Bauri

I found this bird in its hole (that it had made on a bamboo pole). It is a small bird with a green body. I think it is alone as of now or is in search of a partner.

The photos are not focused properly as I never had my specs on when I shot these two photos, moreover the light was also not sufficient, had to use the hood flash. I am waiting to take a better shot of the same bird.

Amazing moment when I got coppersmith bird with dragon fly in its beak!

Coppersmith (Megalaima aemacephala), is a bird with crimson forehead and throat which is best known for its metronomic call that has been likened to a coppersmith striking metal with a hammer.

Beautiful leaves.

The yellow-fronted barbet (Megalaima flavifrons) is an Asian barbet which is an endemic resident breeder in Sri Lanka. Barbets and toucans are a group of near passerine birds with a worldwide tropical distribution. The barbets get their name from the bristles which fringe their heavy bills.

Yellow-fronted barbet is an arboreal species of forests and other woodland, including large gardens, which eats mainly small fruit and only rarely insects. It nests in a tree hole, laying 2-3 eggs.

This is a medium-sized barbet at 21 cm. It is a plump bird, with a short neck, large head and short tail. The adult yellow-fronted barbet has a mainly green body and wing plumage, with a scaly appearance to the breast. It has a blue face and throat, and a yellow crown and moustachial stripes.

The call is a rolling kow-kow-kow-kow.

Crimson-Fronted Barbet

Scientific Name : Megalaima rubricapilla rubricapilla (Xantholaema rubricapilla)

(Ceylon Small Barbet / Ceylon Coppersmith/ Crimson-throated Barbet)

Identification :

(16 cm) Smaller than the Brown Headed Barbet and Yellow-fronted Barbet. Has red forehead, yellow face patches and black bill. Distinguish from the Coppersmith by blue patch below cheek, small red spot on breast, unstreaked breast, and its fast call. Sexes similar. Direct flight with steady wingbeats (beware of confusion with Lorikeet). Some times sings from bare branch at top of tree. Solitary, in pair or, out of breeding season, in flocks.

Voice : A brisk "pop-pop-pop....." (Faster than Coppersmith) in burst of up to six, also a slower "wonk, wonk, wonk"

Status and Distribution : Endemic race (considered by some authorities as separate species) Common in open wood, cultivated land with trees and gardens in the wet zone up to 1000m and parts of the dry zone.

Nesting : In tree hole; January-June
