五色鳥(Megalaima oorti), Photo was taken in Neiwan, a famous tour spot in Hsinchu county, Taiwan. In the photo of similar bird taken at last time, I need to use post-processing software to improve the colors saturation of bird. I was so happy to shot this photo with nature background, although it did not really focus well.

A lifer. Its colors seemed less vibrant to my eyes. Maybe it was the light or people are boosting saturation in post. I'd have to see another one to compare. On another note, seems Collar (2006) split M. oorti (Müller's Barbet) into three species, creating a new Taiwan endemic.

The Look!

I love these charming little birds, always flying about cheerfully.

A reasonably common bird in the broadleaved forests of Sri Lanka.

The Brown Headed Barbet, also called Large Green Barbet, is a resident bird in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. It is mostly seen either solitary or in pair but large groups are very uncommon. It gets mixed so well with tree leaves that it is very difficult to spot this bird. Fruits make up most of their food and hence they can be found easily in and around fruit laden trees. They are accustomed to humans and hence can easily be found in greenery of cities as well. They avoid dense and heavy forests and rarely descend to ground.

This barbet fell off its hole in the tree opposite our home and was dragged into the house by our cat. Successfully rescued, and released into the wild with only bruises to show for a near fatal encounter. My wife, Ann held the bird before release.

A very satisfying story and a short thrilling experience of actually holding a live blue-throated barbet in our hands and feeling the strength in its beak - we got sharp nips on our finger getting it away from our cat.

Location: Makunda Christian Hospital, Karimganj District, Assam

Date: 27th September 2009

學名:Megalaima oorti

英名: Muller's Barbet (Black-browed Barbet)

Family: Capitonidae (鬚鴷科), Length: 20~23 cm.

The Black-browed Barbet or Müller's Barbet (Megalaima oorti) is a bird belonging to the Asian barbet family, Megalaimidae. It is 20-23.5 cm long. The plumage is mostly green apart from the head which is patterned with blue, yellow and red. There is a black stripe above the eye. The bill is black and the feet are grey-green. The Chinese name for the bird, "five-colored bird" (五色鳥) refers to the five colors seen on its plumage. Because of its colorful plumage and that its call resembles that of a percussion instrument known as a wooden fish, the species is also referred to as the "spotted monk of the forest" in Taiwan. It is sometimes treated as a separate species, the Indochinese Barbet. It inhabits tropical and subtropical forests. It forages in the upper and middle levels of the canopy. It excavates a nest hole in a tree but little else is known about its breeding habits.
