বড় বসন্তবৌরি/নীলগলা বসন্তবৌরি

This Asian Barbet found in the forest areas of the Western Ghats, parts of the Eastern Ghats and adjoining hills. It has a distinctive supercilium and a broad white cheek stripe below the eye. They are mostly frugivorous, but will take winged termites and other insects opportunistically.

One more shot of this well camouflaged backyard visitor. Like all other Asian Barbets, they are mainly frugivorous (although they may sometimes eat insects), and use their bills to excavate nest cavities in trees. The main range is along the Western Ghats south from the Surat Dangs and along the associated hills of southern India into parts of the southern Eastern Ghats.

The coppersmith barbet, crimson-breasted barbet or coppersmith (Megalaima haemacephala), is a bird with crimson forehead and throat which is best known for its metronomic call that has been likened to a coppersmith striking metal with a hammer. It is a resident found in the Indian subcontinent and parts of Southeast Asia. Like other barbets, they chisel out a hole inside a tree to build their nest. They are mainly fruit eating but will take sometimes insects, especially winged termites. ( Wikipedia)

These birds play an important role in forests as seed dispersal agents. The white patch around the ear-coverts gives them their name. Since these Barbets sit still, and perch upright, they are difficult to spot. But once spotted they are also easy to capture. Their main range is along the Western Ghats south from the Surat Dangs and along the associated hills of southern India into parts of the southern Eastern Ghats.

A White-cheeked Barbet checking out a Custard Apple. These birds are predominantly green, and they sit still which makes them difficult to spot. Their monotonous Kot-roo...Kotroo... call becomes louder and persistent during the summers. They have a straight and powerful flight.

Coppersmith Barbet, Takur Akar, Megalaima haemacephala

This species got its name because the calls is like a sound of coppersmith’s hammer. The first time I encounter this birds, it is perching high on a tree, too far for my lens. Usually can be found in scattered trees of open country, secondary growth and gardens. One need to be patient for it to comes down to lower level for a good shots. A tree with a lots of fruits got better chances to find this species. Look high up on trees in the gardens early in the morning. You might find it sitting on the top for a long period of time. This one is feasting among other species near fruiting Ficus benjamina tree. Give me ample time to focus and shot.
