It is very similar to the more widespread Brown-headed Barbet (or Large Green Barbet) (Megalaima zeylanica) but this species has a distinctive supercilium and a broad white cheek stripe below the eye and is endemic to the forest areas of the Western Ghats and adjoining hills

Lineated Barbet (Megalaima lineata) is a medium sized bird (28 cm), with thick yellowish bill and mostly dark brown head and breast with broad whitish streaks.
It has broad yellow orbital skin, whitish cheeks to throat, whitish streaks on upper mantle, and whitish dark streaks extending into the belly. The bird inhabits deciduous forest, scattered trees in open areas, coastal scrub, and plantations. Nest is usually excavated in a tree hole and two to four white eggs are laid.
