Piece of wall decoration in the form of the heavily stylized mask of the Mayan rain god Chac, with his huge hooked nose. This sculpture comes from the site of Kabah in Yucatan, we were later to see many more not far away at Uxmal.
The Museo Nacional de AntropologÃa (National Museum of Anthropology) in Mexico City is one of the great museums of the World. It is the most visited in Mexico and the foremost repository of the country's ancient art and cultures, with extensive collections representing the Aztec, Mayan, Olmec and many more of Mexico's ancient civilisations.
The collections are housed in an impressive modern building arranged around a huge courtyard (part of which is covered by a canopy supported solely by a bronzed column ('el paraguas') adorned with relief). The complex is the work of architect Pedro Ramirez Vazquez and opened in 1964.
No visitor to Mexico City should miss this museum and it's amazing contents, which include some of the best known, most iconic surviving relics of the pre-Columbian World.
The plaster on the mask sorta messed it up a bit by making it not as flexible, but it's still decent I think
One of the country's finest museums, the Ashmolean covers all facets of ancient history across the globe up to the medieval period and beyond, along with a fine art collection from the Renaissance to the Pre Raphaelites.
The collections are housed in a magnificent neo-classical building by C.S.Cockerell which been recently re-ordered within to create dramatic new gallery spaces. The work is currently continuing with the refurbishment of the Egyptian galleries, and whilst being unable to see these on this occasion was a disappointment I look forward to a more thorough visit when they reopen in late 2011.
The history of masks in Sri lanka goes back to even before 1895. At that time, masks had been used for the popular stories and characters performed. Our history starts from the arrival of the King Vijaya and his team. The art of masks is to be believed come from South East India, and it had strong relations with the worshiping of devils. This tradition was further developed by the Sinhalese people (Kuveni Asna which explains the story about cursing to King Vijaya and Panduvasdeva by Kuveni was written in 15th century during the Kotte Kingdom). According to the writings and fictions, a dancing troup who used masks had come to Sri Lanka from South India in the 16th century during which the Europeans ruled the country. During this period, the tradition of Kolam was mixed with the art of masks. This art was popular in the countries like Burma, Greece and Rome and it was evident that there were similarities in the masks of Europe and Sri Lanka. However, Sri Lankan art of masks was based on some cultural and religious factors — in Ambalangoda, Sri Lanka.
