This type of mask was first introduced in Italy as a doctor's mask. It was believed the length of the nose kept disease away during times of plague, so these masks are sometimes called Plague Masks, Birdbeak Masks, or Medieval Doctor's Masks. They were sometimes stuffed with medician herbs. These masks were also worn at balls and costume parties, where they had the additional benefit of changing the timbre of the wearer's voice, making it more difficult to identify them...
I came across a man with a box of African masks in a parking lot one day. He had just picked them up from a resale store where he had them on consignment . He was excited when I showed some interest in them and sold them to me for a great price. They have a wonderful exotic aura which I never tire of.

This impressive mask is displayed in the Nahua galleries of the anthropology museum close by the Malinche huipil so I'm guessing the mask represents Malinche, the amiga and translator for Cortes

The mask has always been used as a ritual agent of transformation in Mesoamerica. The ritual wearer of this mask, the shaman, not only represented the god; he was the god. He manifested the life force. Through that ritual transformation joining the worlds of spirit and nature, man and god fused in the zone of mysterious transition marked by the mask itself. Look to the top of the mask and you will see the Shaman ridding the jaguar,,, perhaps chasing away the evil spirits.

Modifications: Made face opening narrower in order to leave off side ribbing; added nubbin on top of head to look like Lego Man

This is one of the many masks we have around the house and in the yard. This is a big one, almost a foot and a half across, and one of my favorites.
For the Something that begins with M theme at 52 in 2013.

This is the first in a Mask with Beaded Eye series.
Funky and expressive, this mask portrays a half face, with a cut-out for an eye.
A dangling glass bead hangs in that empty eye space.
This mask is ready to hang, it is already wired - it can be hung on a wall or can be hung in front of a window so that the light shines through the eye (it would be easy for you to attach a clear fishing wire cord to hang it from the ceiling).
Bokeh Thursday - 21 June 2012 - Theme : Home Made Bokeh Shapes!
OK - I am always good for a Challenge - not sure how many hundreds of shots I have taken, under all sorts of lights and conditions - and it just ain't gonna happen!! So I present my best attempts, just so I don't wimp out on the challenge.
1. Normal close-up focus through the mask! Daylight but cloudy!
2. (Top right) indoor, normal lighting, normal focus, very slight zoom.
3. Decided to meet the challenge with a Bokeh Mask :-) Outdoor, intermittent sunshine.
4. Through the bokeh mask indoors at night, room lights (flipped).
Blah, Duh, disappointing!! But oh boy, I really tried!! I need someone with a magic wand.
(PS, trying to zoom through the mask brought everything in focus so - no bokeh)

Masks of this type were associated with the spirit world and used for the mourning ceremonies of chiefs, the hman hair attached to the mask was supplied by mourners. Like other masks of its type, it consists of a carved wooden face with an exaggerated nose and grimacing mouth, the narrow opening of which provides the only means of vision for the wearer. Unusuall, this figure is smoking a European pipe.

The year is 1768, and Britain is in the throes of the Age of Enlightenment. As a group of artists agrees to found the Royal Academy, Captain James Cook sets sail on a voyage of discovery to track the transit of Venus and search for terra australis incognita – the unknown southern continent, as Europeans called it. What Cook and his crew encounter on arrival is a vast number of island civilisations covering almost a third of the world’s surface: from Tahiti in Polynesia, to the scattered archipelagos and islands of Melanesia and Micronesia.
The indigenous populations they met came with their own histories of inter-island trade, ocean navigation, and social and artistic traditions. This spectacular exhibition reveals these narratives – celebrating the original, raw and powerful art that in time would resonate across the European artistic sphere.
Oceania brings together around 200 exceptional works from public collections worldwide, and spans over 500 years. From shell, greenstone and ceramic ornaments, to huge canoes and stunning god images, we explore important themes of voyaging, place making and encounter. The exhibition draws from rich historic ethnographic collections dating from the 18th century to the present, and includes seminal works produced by contemporary artists exploring history, identity and climate change.

Myra, Antalya, Turkey
Myra was a leading city of the Lycian Union and surpassed Xanthos in early Byzantine times to become the capital city of Lycia. Its remains are situated about 1.5 km north of today's Demre, on the KaÅŸ-Finike road. Most of the ancient city is now covered by Demre and alluvial silts, for it is located on the river Demre Cay in a fertile alluvial plain. Today this large plain is almost covered with greenhouses stuffed full of tomatoes. In ancient times this area was probably farmed extensively, for export and trade with the interior of Lycia.
The date of Myra's foundation is unknown. There is no literary mention of it before the 1st century BC, when it is said to be one of the six leading cities of the Lycian Union (the other five were Xanthos, Tlos, Pinara, Patara and Olympos). It is believed to date back much further however, as an outer defensive wall has been dated to the 5th century BC.
The city is well known for its amphitheatre (the largest in Lycia) and the plethora of rock-cut tombs carved in the cliff above the theatre.

There's a convention I'm going to tomorrow, and my sibling is going as Foxy from FNAF. My costume isn't ready yet, but I'll post it when its done. I just wanted to post there mask, cause IT LOOKS SO GOOD!!! If you flip up the eye patch, there is another eye! Oh, and I thought this would be a good way to Segway... Into my Youtube channel!
