awesome masquerade mask from Halloween U.S.A.
gorgeous fall foliage and grapevines provided by my backyard.
I named this mask Iridesses the Ice Queen. I made her for a local charity auction. I started with a plain white mask, painted it, added a handle, metal fan for a crown and embellished it with vintage jewelry and even gave her a throne to sit upon. How bad is the H1N1 outbreak in California? Last week, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell announced new protective measures for schools. This includes a CDC recommendation that school nurses caring for ill students should wear gloves and an N95 respirator face mask, like the one shown here. The CA Emergency Management Authority recently received a pair of federal grants to buy millions of sets of masks and gloves.

I made two masks this week to donate to the fashion sale at the school- they turned out great- the theme of the event is "The Secrets of Marie Antionette" and both masks have the 18th century Commedia dell'arte look.
This one is called "Le notte di Maria Antoinetta"
This African Mask hung on our wal for years before I decided to mosaic it. It's a little over 3 feet long and 1 foot wide. I still have to grout it... that should be FUN!

National Portrait Gallery, District of Columbia
The most compelling imagery at the National Portrait Gallery had to be these life masks of Abraham Lincoln. They were made only 5 years apart, the later one of which were created two months before Lincoln’s assassination. The president evidently aged significantly during this short span of merely half a decade. The dedication of a visionary, noble public servant ought to be remembered.
Back in the early days of my photoshop learnings, I followed a tutorial to the T here. I wish I had the link to this since I think it actually turned out kind of cool for something I did with little to no PS skills.

I was a little girl, and this reply
Had no solution. I knew well back then:

But mama… mama… will she speak again?
She was back with her mask, her rosy coloured shield.
I’ve seen, on her real face, her sorrow unconcealed.

I was looking for something to hold my masking tapes
the few ones on Etsy were a bit too expensive and/or not holding enough of them
I went to the art store this morning (my new favorite shop !) & found these two things, originally meant for clay & scultpure (I think)
they were 5 euros each (not that bad), I know they could have been homemade, but I didn't have the proper materials ...
This type of mask was first introduced in Italy as a doctor's mask. It was believed the length of the nose kept disease away during times of plague, so these masks are sometimes called Plague Masks, Birdbeak Masks, or Medieval Doctor's Masks. They were sometimes stuffed with medician herbs. These masks were also worn at balls and costume parties, where they had the additional benefit of changing the timbre of the wearer's voice, making it more difficult to identify them...
