Mapperley Wood Reserve

Dunnock / prunella modularis. Mapperley Wood, Derbyshire. 03/02/16.

I loved the look of this Dunnock when it flew up to the dead branch which was bathed in late afternoon sunshine.

Prior to this, it had spent all of its time on the ground foraging for food, as is typical of this species.

The old country name of Shufflewing is fitting because as it moves, it continually flicks its wings.

Having seen my mate going into Arnold with this, I decided to nip into Sainsbury's, grab a drink and await his return a few minutes later.

423 passes Arnold Sainsbury's with a 25 to Nottingham via Mapperley, Gedling and Carlton. Remarkably, not one person wanted the 25, most were waiting for the 53 a minute or so behind which took me by surprise!!

An evening out with the lovely Lorna to a 1940’s dance, 22nd April 2023.

Done it, the last of the 52 - and I didn't miss a week; taken in Mapperley, Nottingham 2013.

Wood Anemone / anemone nemorosa. Mapperley Wood, Derbyshire. 26/04/16.

A local wood has given a good showing of these flowers this Spring. I found many areas carpeted with them which was great as WA's actually signal the arrival of Spring to me far more powerfully than bluebells!!!

On a day of mixed weather I visited the wood to make some images. I selected a densely packed white carpet of them growing on a bank that looked pristine as I approached it.

It was only when I lay down and viewed the flower heads at eye level, that I could fully appreciate the stage each one had reached - lost all sepals or retained just some, showed signs of browning and decay or looked fresh and bright.

It was a salutary reminder I suppose, that time waits for no living thing and that Spring is marching on.

I hope my image reflects this in microcosm.

Eurasian Jay / garrulus glandarius. Mapperley Wood, Derbyshire. 25/01/17.

As a change from seeking out and photographing winter thrushes and Waxwings in urban environments, I've visited a local wood twice recently. No noise, interruptions, ducking and diving - just sheer bliss to sit quietly relaxed and see what turned up...and I wasn't disappointed!

On this occasion there had been thick fog all morning which suddenly and miraculously lifted at midday, revealing blue sky and sunshine. I made this image two and a half hours later when the Jay was starting to get backlit. I quite like the bokeh and few specular highlights - and of course, the Jay's pretty smart too!

Somewhere between mapperley plains and calverton

Due to a Parade in Mapperley, the 45 was diverted via Woodthorpe Drive, Mansfield Road, The Vale, Thackeray's Lane, Arno Vale Road, right Somersby Road & Plains Road. with the 25 joining the diversion at Arno Vale Road.

Mapperley sunset . Thursday 03rd June 2021

Looks like something from the The Addams Family! Gotta love the name of this Barbers here in Nottinghamshire. "Come in, take a seat!"

No Group Banners, thanks.

Really taking my chances with this photo, but since the footpath on Holyoake Road was closed and traffic being lighter from the lockdown, I'd try my luck... Paying off better than expected!!

905 waits to turn onto Westdale Lane from Holyoake Road with a 45 to Nottingham via Mapperley and Woodborough Road.

Sometimes I'm probably guilty of spending a bit too long processing my photos but this needed no such work, a quick levels adjustment and some sharpening and that's all it needed.

Taken using a 0.9 ND grad.

I'd love some critique and comments.

Due to remembrance service at Mapperley Shops, the 60/1 were diverted via Mapperley Rise, Winchester Street, Mansfield Road, Thackeray's Lane, Arno Vale Road, Somersby Road and Plains Road.

434 was seen on Winchester Street whilst on the 60 towards Nottingham.

An interesting surprise and a rarity I haven't seen or heard of before!!

434 terminates in Gedling with a 45 from Nottingham via Woodborough Road and Mapperley before returning to Nottingham the same way, and not heading to Gedling with a 44A!!

Love these little sweeties. E-M1 MKII/100-400mm.

Please click on pic for a larger and nicer view :-)

Great Tit / parus major. Mapperley Wood, Derbyshire. 21/11/15.

Looking very smart in the late afternoon sunshine.

These birds always seem edgy when out in the open. They take flight easily I've noticed and only appear to be relaxed when perched amid a jungle of branches.

Long-tailed Tit / aegithalos caudatus. Mapperley Wood, Derbyshire. 28/01/19.

A sweet little face, complete with miniature lemon drop eyelids!

BEST VIEWED LARGE.

Impossible to resist photographing these live wires at any opportunity … you can never have too much cuteness in my opinion ;-)

Eurasian Jay / garrulus glandarius. Mapperley Wood, Derbyshire. 28/01/19.

This Jay never once announced it's arrival at the feeding area. Every time it would approach cautiously, working it's way forward via a series of partially concealed perches. Always vigilant, if something didn't quite suit it, it would fly off silently ... only to try again later. Jays are such canny birds and always rather awesome to watch going about their daily lives.

I imagine nothing much escapes their steely blue stare!

The 46/47, although relatively short circulars at an hour, do serve a stunning bit of the County beyond Mapperley, taking in Lambley and Woodborough up to every 30 minutes!!

337 is pictured climbing Bank Hill with a 47 to Nottingham via Mapperley Plains and Mapperley.

Due to a burst water main near Woodborough, the 61 is currently diverting via Bank Hill, Mapperley Plains and Catfoot Lane.

Long-tailed Tit / aegithalos caudatus. Mapperley Wood, Derbyshire. 21/11/15.

Yesterday I was delighted to share the late afternoon sun with this little guy and his gang.

I always think of them as tiny, energised balls of feathers!!! They are a nightmare to make images of as they never stay still.

Eurasian Nuthatch / sitta europaea. Mapperley Wood, Derbyshire. 28/01/19.

A feeding station and it’s plentiful supply of peanuts drew these Nuthatches into the area. Despite it only being January, the sunny weather seemed to stimulate their interest in each other. Wherever one ventured, the other was sure to follow!

Love was in the air!

A very interesting allocation!! NCT tweeted the 17:17 Lilac 25B was unable to operate but I guess they found a driver available...

404 unusually climbs Westdale Lane with a 25B to Mapperley.

My first actual visit to Chase Farm today, no doubt first of a few in the coming years when the development grows.

Since Sunday just gone, the 45 has been extended to serve the full length of Shelford Road, turning right onto Arnold Lane then immediate left into Waldrom Road to the new termporary terminus of Harviston Drive.

Another positive change from the same date was the Saturday frequency improving from every 12 minutes back to every 10.

434 is seen at the end of Waldrom Road in Chase Farm with a 45 to Nottingham via Gedling, Mapperley and Woodborough Road.

Another night on tour which included some 25b’s which are rare for myself.

A really nice pink sunrise behind the photogenic lone tree. Taken at Gedling Country Park, Nottingham

From the hide in Mapperley wood on Sunday

A great allocation today saw the celebrity biogas Scania unleashed onto the 25/56 circuit, so two more pictures to add to the collection....

500 passes Elmhurst Avenue on Westdale Lane in Gedling with a 25 to Arnold via Mapperley and Daybrook.

The most recent repaint at CT4N is also one of their oldest vehicles!!

925 looks fantastic in corporate livery, clocked approaching Arnold Sainsbury's with an S11 to Mapperley via Plains Estate and Mapperley Plains.

One photo location I've always like the look of is the raised houses on Shelford Road, I don't know why, but I just think they look really presentable!!

437 heads down Shelford Road in Gedling on a 45 from Nottingham, St. Ann's and Mapperley.

Long-tailed Tit / aegithalos caudatus. Mapperley Wood, Derbyshire. 21/11/15.

When the sun was very low at the end of the afternoon, the LTT flock slowed down a gear or two.

This one found a large branch, away from the others, settled and enjoyed the last rays. I can't imagine there was any warmth to be had but at least it remained still for a minute or two!

Out of service but in service??

437 sits on King Street loading up a 45 to Gedling via Mapperley with the wrong display showing. The driver of the 44 pulled up alongside him to let him know....
