Ever watchful and willing to push the boundaries where food is concerned.
This individual has worn away a tiny patch of fur on its nose by regularly sticking it into a 'squirrel-proof' feeder!!!

Wood Anemone / anemone nemorosa. Mapperley Wood, Derbyshire. 23/04/18.
Within a carpet of white Wood Anemones on a ditch bank, there were many flower heads flushed with pinkish-purple tones like the one shown. Closer scrutiny revealed thin purple streaks running through the delicately coloured petals.
I think I love these early Spring flowers more than any other species. Apart from their obvious charm, I admire their resilience in changeable, often adverse weather conditions. Once I saw little flowers pushing up through snow.
Another common name for the Wood Anemone is 'Windflower' which seems very apt. Whenever I come across any, they are invariably being shaken around by wind - sometimes quite violently. Despite this, they manage to hold on to their petals and quickly regain their composure when things calm down. Making this image was a bit of a challenge because it was being buffeted back and forth. I had to wait for breaks in the wind, the flower would return to a vertical position, I would fire off some shots. All rather hit and miss but I'm quite pleased with some of the results. This one, although not technically on point, does capture a sense of movement and definitely captures the moment....for me at least!
I've only got the confirmation from one of the staff here that this had been a petrol station, although this was a long time ago.
Only a totem pole stands from the petrol station days, the garage has been Porchester Auto Centre all throughout street view era.

Common Bluebell / hyacinthoides non-scripta. Mapperley Wood, Derbyshire. 23/04/18.
'DING-DONG BLUE'.
During this prolonged spell of miserable weather, 'cabin fever' and an urgent need to connect with nature found me heading to a local wood one afternoon. Conditions were not ideal for photography but the earthy, bluebell-scented atmosphere within the wood was just what the doctor ordered!

Whilst the 56 runs all day on diversion, the more elusive one to get it the single 57 which runs from Plains Estate at 0822.
Whilst Thackerays Lane is closed, the 57 is running via Somersby Road, Plains Road, Mapperley Shops and Woodthorpe Road.
Whilst Plains Road and Mapperley Shops aren't stops being observed, the full length of Woodthorpe Road is, with a raft of temporary stop flags put up for observing.
536 crosses the old railway bridge adjacent to Woodthorpe Park with the 57 to Nottingham via Sherwood.
Dunnock / prunella modularis. Mapperley Wood, Derbyshire. 03/02/16.
High tea in the late afternoon!
The Dunnock summoned the courage to fly up to the feeding log in search of a few morsels before going to roost.
They never seem relaxed in elevated, exposed places like this and predictably, the visit lasted only seconds.
Due to a burst water main near Woodborough, the 61 is currently diverting via Bank Hill, Mapperley Plains and Catfoot Lane.
One location I love to photograph is the climb up Somersby Road, annoyingly though, it's not normally served by buses!!
Luckily enough for me, the 56 and 57 are on diversion whilst Thackerays Lane is closed from ongoing gasworks, City bound buses turning left from Nordean Road to climb Somersby, right onto Plains Road, non-stop past Mapperley Shops, then right again down Woodthorpe Road to resume normal route on Mansfield Road at Woodthorpe Park.
497 is pictured mid-climb on Somersby Road with an off-route 56 to Nottingham via Mapperley, Woodthorpe and Sherwood.
Greater Stitchwort / stellaria holostea. Mapperley Wood, Derbyshire. 16/05/16.
Captured in a local wood at the end of an afternoon.
The sun dramatically hit these flowers whenever it showed between the fast racing clouds. At such times they appeared as dazzling white stars.
More often however, the flowers looked like this in their shady growing place at the side of a footpath.
Here their heads were gently jostled by the breeze, so were never still for long.
I enjoyed experimenting, to try and capture the sense of movement I saw. This image goes some way towards my goal.
Moments before the sole 57 emerged heading to Nottingham, the 56 started it's ascent towards Mapperley and Arnold.

'BLOWING IN THE WIND.'
I've not been to Mapperley Wood yet this Spring, but imagine Wood Anemones are out in force. With sunny weather forecast for much of this week, I'm thinking I need to go there soon for one of my permitted daily exercise walks. It would be sad to miss them.
I bet there are other floral delights to be found along the way too.

'LITTLE BLUE STAR'.
If ever there was a day to question what's happened to Spring, it has got to be this one! It's cold, grey and the rain hasn't stopped all morning.
Time then to celebrate Bluebells and other wild flowers that are striving against the odds to get going. This image was made in a local bluebell wood where I was struck by the angle of one open flower resting on some unopened flower buds.
Hope my view of the little blue star brings some cheer to a dismal Friday.

Candlesnuff Fungus / xylaria hypoxylon. Mapperley Wood, Derbyshire. 29/01/18.
"ARE YA DANCIN?' - "I'M DANCIN"
So easily dismissed but worth a closer look. These flattened, tough little fungi occur in groups and their fruiting bodies are often branched, giving the appearance of antlers - (with some stretch of the imagination!)
I love how they twist slightly in all directions. When viewed en masse they remind me of dancers, hence the title.

Passing Stanton Gate (on the Mapperley Goods Branch) on 20th September 1996 is 58034 with three wagons that had been on display for possible future traffic to and from the Stanton Works site. This was one of Ed Burkhardt's attempts to get traffic back on the rails, the SSA for scrap metal in to feed the melting plant, the MEA was I think planned for inwards coke, and the BDA for outbound pipes, which did materialise with several contracts in the following years, including extending the line further into the works.

Majestic Cinema, Mapperley, Nottingham. Designed by A J Thraves and opened in 1929, the Majestic seated 721 in stalls and circle. It closed in 1957 and was converted (with minimal alteration) to a store. Later it was reopened as The Old Cinema, a paranormal museum with a café. On selected nights, horror films were screened using some balcony seating. This closed in 2020, and since then the building has been vandalised, and used as an illegal cannabis farm. Grade 2 listed.

Eurasian Nuthatch / sitta europaea. Mapperley Wood, Derbyshire. 28/01/19.
Nuthatches remain within their breeding territory all year round as they are extremely sedentary. These characterful, monogamous birds commence their courtship in mid to late winter.
On the beautifully sunny January day this image was made, these two were definitely showing an interest in each other and keeping close together.
Probably a little similar to the previous upload but...
Back on the Sigma for tonights uploads, she don't do too bad :)

This Squirrel looks as if it's been in a scrap or two judging by the condition of it's left ear.

Eurasian Jay / garrulus glandarius. Mapperley Wood, Derbyshire. 28/01/19.
'THE SILENT JAY.'
The Jay put in an appearance a few times during my stay in the wood but never once made a direct fly-in. It's preference was to land at a distance, usually on a well screened perch. From there it worked it's way hesitantly towards the feeding area. All the time it was vigilant, looking round in every direction.
