ENGLISH CAPTION: "Atacama Nigths..." An old railroad water tank is silhouetted against the starry sky in the ruins of the old mining town of Aguada de Cachinales, located in Atacama Desert (Second Region of Chile).

This railroad had its "golden age" between 1880 and 1930, transporting passengers, nitrate and metals between the city of Taltal and the Cachinal de la Sierra mine, but because of a series of economic crises linked to the nitrate industry, the railway was dismantled and the town of Aguada de Cachinales abandoned.

Currently only the water tank remains standing, surrounded by a landscape of adobe ruins of what once was a major population center.

A few minutes after the last photograph the sun started vanishing behind the horizon. That was when I pulled the trigger and caught those magnificent clouds moving by in the last sunlight of that day.

ENGLISH CAPTION: "Nebulae..." The Magellanic Clouds are two irregular dwarf galaxies orbiting the Milky Way. The larger one is named Large Magellanic Cloud, whereas the smaller one is called Small Magellanic Cloud (hover the mouse over the picture to identify them). Due to their position in the sky, close to the south celestial pole, these two small galaxies are only visible from the southern hemisphere.

The night of this panoramic shot (36 photos) coincided with the meteor shower known as Geminids, a highly recommended night show that happens every 13-14 December, if you look closely you can see a tiny one next to the bottom-right side of this photo. July Arditi, Magdalena County, Buenos Aires Province.
