So, I finally got around to purchasing a tripod and picked up a Manfrotto for Christmas.

I was originally looking at some kind of Induro setup, but was shown this Manfrotto leg and ballhead setup and was satisfied.

I'm looking forward to shooting with this in the New Year, and now I have one less excuse to miss shots!

The black knob is for adjusting tilt. I wish there was a way to tell when the plate is horizontal. A small level or an angle reading would be nice.

Calumet makes a head that looks very similar and costs about 2/3 as much. I could have picked it up locally too. I wasn't sure of the quality, though. I have been satisfied with my Manfrotto gear and felt the known level of quality was worth the extra cost..

Today I decided to give one of my tripod ball heads a tune up. I disassembled and wiped all of the parts clean. Then repacked the guts with new grease and adjusted the internal screws to reduce the minor wobble between the base and casting. There is still a slight bit of annoying camera "droop" when repositioning, but for the price/value of this model I think can deal with it for now.
