'Over the Points' was a small quarterly magazine issued by the pre-nationalisation Southern Railway of England and handed out to holders of first class season tickets. It is of exemplary production, set and printed at the Curwen Press, who at the time were amongst the foremost printers around, and the look and feel of the periodical oozes Curwen's attention to detail. The vast majority of the line illustrations were undertaken by Victor Reinganum, in a very abstract style, typical of his work.

This is one of three cover styles that were used over the years.

Big ups go to photographer, Scott A. Miller for his wonderful photographs of the final shuttle launch.

Opening spread for a feature story about the business side of the horse industry. This layout will always be a fond memory for me because after too much time on the internet and around town looking for just the right horse, we used this one out of my son's barnyard set.

Primary Dilemmas and Solutions:

---------

DILEMMA: Old design reflects neither army nor family.

SOLUTION: Create a design that speaks to both army servicemen "AND" their family members via color palettes, type palettes, element palettes and improved editorial content organization.

---------

DILEMMA: Current uniform color theme causes content to run together and does not reflect the military, patriotism or family living.

SOLUTION: Create a color palette based on common army and patriotic colors and give colors a purpose throughout the publication, theme sections, etc. (i.e. give the family and brat life sections a warmer touch while maintaining an army gray as the base).

---------

DILEMMA: Content runs together and is lost through uniform design coupled with no content organization.

SOLUTION: Separate like content into departments and create a feature well. Create separate color themes for each section.

---------

DILEMMA: Old type palette does not speak to proper audience and does not complement the content.

SOLUTION: Create a base type palette that improves legibility, content organization and speaks to the proper audiences (both army servicemen and their family members).

---------

DILEMMA: Old magazine utilizes a flip strategy where the front half of the magazine is "Family Life 101" and when the magazine is flipped over, the second half of the magazine is "Brat Life 101". However, the content in the Brat Life half is not geared towards children. Instead, the content is still geared towards army servicemen with children dependents. This means that both halves of the magazine have the same audience. Also, flip magazines are historically a failed magazine model.

SOLUTION: Create a "Brat Life" section within "Family Life 101" and lose the flip book strategy.

Deep South Peanut Pie - Karo Syrup - What the ..? Meet the seriously weird Karo Kid, who seems to be welcoming us to his nightmare. Attention Peanut Chucky – step away from the bowler hat! On second thought – don’t. This is one of the most perversely daft ads we’ve ever seen. Novelists are right; the past really is another country.

Why not prepare these treats for your loved ones? Featuring the wholesome goodness of brand name recognition.

Dairy Farmers Of Canada – You’ve Never Tasted Scalloped Potatoes Like These

Hey everyone: party time! Quick – think of a snack! Chips, maybe? Pop? Hot dogs? Nope – at our house we serve scalloped potatoes! And you can bet we have more fun with our skim milk powder, potatoes, and 8-cup casserole dish than you kids ever will with your beatnik weenie roasts and your precious beer.

Opening spread for a feature story about the opening of the Florida Horse Park. I had this idea which seemed so perfect for them, but we didn't have a budget for an illustrator for this project so I created it at home on my time. The image along with my headline (puny guy) received terrific response.

But that's just half the story.

The Florida Horse Park liked it so much they asked to use the illustration (and the title) for an upcoming event... for free. I suggested they just buy the rights from me and that they should consider it for their actual logo. They cried poor. Because of their relationship to the city and my magazine I granted limited rights to use it (for free) for that event for that year only. The next year I got the same phone call, made the same suggestion and we ended with the same (free) limited usage rights.

Here's where it got interesting.

The next year, I open our local newspaper to see an ad for the upcoming event using a VERY poorly executed variation of my mark — no permission asked! I was already letting them use it for free so WTF?!? Now I'm mad! They claimed ignorance to any wrong doing and didn't want to compensate me so I lawyered up. In the end I got paid. Not enough for the time I spent dealing with the crooks, but enough so they felt it. I learned a valuable copyright too.

Cover

Lipton Onion Soup Mix: Switzerland - This is another 1970s ad that betrays a touch of nervousness about foreign food. Even innocuous cheese dips like fondue were cauldrons of untamed European sensuality. Note the fine print: “Variation: Substitute 2 1/4 cups apple juice for wine and kirsch.”

Chun King Frozen Foods: Most Happy Chinese New Year - Happy Chinese New Year 1971! Complete with a pidgin Chinese-American greeting. Guess this was okay 40 years ago, most honourable Chun King ancestors. Also: egg foo ‘young’.

Campbell’s Cream Of Mushroom Tuna Crunch Casserole - Another puzzling marriage. A casserole that looks like soup with lemon meringue pie for dessert. What’s that strange sensation? Our stomachs running away.

The imposed restriction of HAVING to use a cover model has sent me to some strange places graphically.

It’s a little known showbiz fact that after The Sound Of Music, the child stars went into a downward spiral. Their performing engagements dried up, so the kids were forced to climb back in the costumes and sing for their supper.

The magazine is a tough exercise for visual designers: an industrial product subject to many constraints. Made by a host of participants, it is truly the work of a team, with all the hitches that this entails. Another constraint is topicality: a magazine must always be in the zeitgeist but without every losing sight of the reader, whose satisfaction will dictate its success and therefore its survival.Il magazine, which draws inspiration from the visual quality of ‘70s style without every lapsing into vulgar pastiche, is a perfect example of a well-performed score. The covers are especially accomplished, and could account for the magazine’s success on their own.
