Campbell’s Onion Soup - Fire the food stylist! - Because hamburgers shouldn’t look like they’re yawning …

Our NEW themed issue inspired this cereal box cover and provided the opportunity to show the full word magazine on our cover for the first time by making seeing it wrap around the box. It was also our first cover free of the imposed restriction of a female model on the cover. To commemorate the milestone, I crushed the model a la Wizard of Oz style.

Cover for our first men's themed issue. Very proud that we actually were allowed to put men on this cover, albeit in the background. Much debate surrounded the black eye on the model. Fear of it looking like we were condoning abuse (brought up by female staff) made me soften the shiner for print. I didn't agree and when I saw the printed copy, I was thoroughly disappointed that I gave in. This shows the cover as it was intended. What do you think?

Sunday Supper Hurry Upper With Miracle Sandwich Spread - Still on the sandwich theme, this hot dog is – wait a minute. Closer examination reveals this to be a ‘bean boat’, which is made with canned kidney beans and an extinct ancestor of Miracle Whip. Sail away!

Atttention, everybody! The tour bus will return to the hotel in an hour. After you’ve finished taking your pictures of the Great Wall, we’ll have a special meal waiting for you. It’s a time-honoured Chinese delicacy called ‘Cantonese Tuna’. Try to tackle this dish using your chopsticks, it adds to the authentic experience.

IEEE Spectrum // April 2009.

Commissioned Tavis Coburn to illustrate this story on the future of handsets and cell phones, which could eventually process radio and television signals, as well as regular voice and internet. I had the basic idea of showing a handset with multiple antennas, and Tavis rocked it out.
