Campbell’s Great Idea:

Golden Rabbit - We’re not sure about the ‘rabbit’ reference: is it an allusion to rarebit, or are the toast points supposed to look like bunny ears? Shelf Life has another viewpoint entirely. To us, this combo looks like a nightmarish cheeseburger, minus the burger.

This is another page from my magazine. The entire backbone of the mag was about the new 1% fat milk 'the One' from Wisemans Milk. So, naturally, that theme oozes throughout the design.

The opening spread for a feature story about growth suggestions for the small but growing town of Ocala. Don't go to the sideways spread often, but when it's right...

Aunt Jemima: Scrumptious Brunches From A Month Of Sundays - Ah, innocence. Shelf Life loves the fact that in February 1960 the word ‘brunch’ had to be explained: “Call it breakfast … call it lunch … call it ‘brunch’”. Along the same lines, Shelf Life would like to coin another term: “Call her Aunt Jemima .. call her a patronizing emblem from a dominant culture … call her Aunt Patrodomture!”

Sprite Lime Punch - Shelf Life is puzzled by this punch recipe, which calls for lime gelatin, bottled lime juice, and frozen limeade, but no real lime (except as garnish). Oh well. We’ll just go with the flow and take them up on that vodka suggestion.

Opening spread for a story on bullying.

Opening spread for a feature story that exposes the corn industry’s negative impact on health and the environment. Borrowing from the photography book Food Play by Joost Elffers and Saxton Freymann I sought to create a villianous character out of an ear of corn. I turned to local photographer Kent Weakley and my retoucher, Josh Clark for the photo. The sinister grin together with my Natural Corn Killers headline set a perfectly ominous tone for the story to follow.

The is the Table of Contents as well as the features and departments pages for my Self magazine design. I used the tear drop shape that I created as part of my mast head on the cover to connect the two and to make this layout cohesive. I used the same color scheme as well. I am really happy with the way this turned out.

All of the photos were taken myself.

Call us feminist, but – isn’t it sort of weird that the big, un-fancy cake goes to the boys (and only on their birthdays, since presumably too many cakes would make them gay) while the smaller, frou-frou number goes to ‘good little girls?’ Of course, the femme cake has a cherry on top. Creepy.

Chef Boy-Ar-Dee Chinese Pizza - Gung Hay Fat Choy From Chef Boy-Ar-Dee! And hey, in case you don’t like the idea of ‘Chinese’ pizza, the Chef says: no problem. The Chef’s got Spanish, he’s got American - whatever you want!
