The magazine Art & Industry, previously Commercial Art etc., altered their front cover design and layout in early 1940 to what is even now a relatively 'clean' and 'modern' design and interestingly the changes are applauded in one edition by no less than the advertising artist and designer, Ashley Havinden, at Crawford's Agency. Sadly this series was very short lived as by late 1940 the impact of wartime rationing meant the magazine shrank in size and had to become a much simpler affair for many long years and indeed it never reverted to this format again.
This issue discussing stencilled letter-forms uses a similar letter form for the main heading here.
Opening spread for a feature story about the latest high-tech devices. I don't get to illustrate much anymore, so when we ran into trouble getting the items needed to shoot or good enough provided images, I figured it was the universe telling me it was time.

This is one of the pages of a magazine I was commissioned to design for The Sunday Herald. I pretty much got a blank canvas on how to design it which was awesome!

Cover for our annual green issue. This image perfectly wrapped (Ha!) our big story about plastic and gave us a big challenge of getting our logo stretched onto a plastic surface.

A very striking and clever work by Abram Games for the July 1943 issue of Art & Industry magazine for the subject of wartime poster design. The blending of the sword and the paint brush with the use of bold colours is indicative of Games's skill as an artist and graphic designer. Games (1914 - 1996) had emerged as a designer in the late 1930s and after wartime service that saw him transferred to become an official war artist he went on to enjoy a long career as a poster and graphic designer for many companies and organisations.
