IL winner Magazine

The magazine is a tough exercise for visual designers: an industrial product subject to many constraints. Made by a host of participants, it is truly the work of a team, with all the hitches that this entails. Another constraint is topicality: a magazine must always be in the zeitgeist but without every losing sight of the reader, whose satisfaction will dictate its success and therefore its survival.Il magazine, which draws inspiration from the visual quality of ‘70s style without every lapsing into vulgar pastiche, is a perfect example of a well-performed score. The covers are especially accomplished, and could account for the magazine’s success on their own.

Opening spread for a feature story about the opening of the Florida Horse Park. I had this idea which seemed so perfect for them, but we didn't have a budget for an illustrator for this project so I created it at home on my time. The image along with my headline (puny guy) received terrific response.

But that's just half the story.

The Florida Horse Park liked it so much they asked to use the illustration (and the title) for an upcoming event... for free. I suggested they just buy the rights from me and that they should consider it for their actual logo. They cried poor. Because of their relationship to the city and my magazine I granted limited rights to use it (for free) for that event for that year only. The next year I got the same phone call, made the same suggestion and we ended with the same (free) limited usage rights.

Here's where it got interesting.

The next year, I open our local newspaper to see an ad for the upcoming event using a VERY poorly executed variation of my mark — no permission asked! I was already letting them use it for free so WTF?!? Now I'm mad! They claimed ignorance to any wrong doing and didn't want to compensate me so I lawyered up. In the end I got paid. Not enough for the time I spent dealing with the crooks, but enough so they felt it. I learned a valuable copyright too.

Velveeta Cheese:

It’s a little known showbiz fact that after The Sound Of Music, the child stars went into a downward spiral. Their performing engagements dried up, so the kids were forced to climb back in the costumes and sing for their supper.

Campbell’s Cream Of Mushroom Tuna Crunch Casserole - Another puzzling marriage. A casserole that looks like soup with lemon meringue pie for dessert. What’s that strange sensation? Our stomachs running away.

Opening spread for a feature story about a group of doctors putting medical records online. Exciting stuff, right? Really felt a need to inject some drama into this snoozer so my approach was not to focus on the new, but to play on the fear of change and new things. Worked with Djamel E. Ramoul to create this dramatic (Platon inspired) portrait. We made these docs look like rockstars! This is one of the longest headlines I've ever written. Necessary to show the type whole and shredded.

Magazine we had to create using found images.

Shredded Ralston: All This And Breakfast Too - Who knew that Ralston Purina once made human food – including snacks and candy made from Shreddie-like cereal bits? Too bad Shredded Ralston failed to catch on – cynics would say that dogs are easier to please.

The opening spread for a photo driven story about the victims of a devastating local tornado. The headline and type treatment designed to punctuate this powerful image of a recovered photo salvaged from the wreckage showing several tornado victims in happier times juxtaposed. Terrific photography courtesy of Richard Rossetto.

Great Moments From Kraft – In the 70s, cookies were simple and so were Moms – mothers were supposed to look like airline hostesses. Today, things are more complicated – mothers are supposed to look like attorneys-slash-porn-stars-slash-Swiffer-pitchwomen. And dull ginger crackle cookies wouldn’t make even the last page in Readers Digest.

Philadelphia Cream Cheese and Kraft Marshmallows: Delight Fantastic -

Right - now for the tricky part. We’ve made the ‘Delight Fantastic’ recipe; the next step is to balance the plate on these balloons. Okay … we’ve secured the balloons … now we’re setting the plate down …viola! Come and get … noooo!

Shelf Life is nostalgic for the days when the combination of Cheez Whiz and celery added up to something new and exciting. When ad copy breathlessly suggested: ‘Fill celery with Cheez Whiz. And eat!’ Ah, the classics – on the great calendar of food advertising, they date from a million years ago.

Look What You Can Do With Hot Cling Peaches, - Ketchup and mustard spooned in peach halves – wish we’d thought of that. But not actually eaten it. And about the burger idea; if the peaches aren’t actually in the hamburger, aren’t they kind of arbitrary?

300-page marketing catalog for Flatwire, a Southwire brand featuring highlights from all Flatwire media presence including radio & television spots, print & web articles and awards. Workflow required large amounts of OCR, web archive mining, content tagging and automatic content placement via scripting.

Page spreads from Raygun magazine by David Carson. Grunge typography goodness from the 1990s.

Libby’s New Fix-Easy Fall Recipes - Shelf Life treasures this ad for its daffy, sincere efforts to sex up baked beans. We’re especially interested in the first dish, ‘Beans Franks Feast’ (recipe from Mary Hale Martin, noted Ideal Cartoon Homemaker Head), which features bunless hot dogs floating on top of a casserole, with more loaded weiners buried inside. So much to love!

Wesson Oil Takes The Smoke Out Of Frying - This recipe calls for corn, pancake mix, an inch of oil, and lots of maple syrup. It should also call for a free Jenny Craig introductory offer.

Mock magazine title Bold : A Music Report. Set in Adobe Garamond Pro and Bodoni StvyTwo ITC TT.

Opening spread for a story behind a local high school pitcher being scouted by the major leagues. A hard personal history and his number are graphically tied together for emphasis.

Bakers Chocolate - We love this ad. If we were eight years old in April 1962, we would totally run around and play Musical Chairs and gorge on pink icing and knock ourselves out on party fun. Later, while Mom cleaned up, we would thank our lucky stars that we had a happy celebration and that we weren’t one of the “temporarily tearstained”.

Minute Rice & Star Kist Tuna: Captain’s Casserole - Hey ladies! Got some cheese, olives, rice, tomatoes, milk, soup, potato chips, onion – heck, the whole kitchen – plus six people to eat this thing? …No?
