Opening spread for a what's happening in town type story. I guess I'm just a simple man; you give me a story about hot tickets and I just want to see those tickets burn, baby burn!

Betty Crocker Cake Mixes: Man Beats Wife - Men – that is, Mad Men era copywriters - would also seem to go for now-horrifying double entendres, and cake.

Chef Boy-Ar-Dee Italian Food Festival - For Americans in 1962, nothing said ‘Italian cuisine’ like Chef Boy Ar Dee products (the actual chef was Ettore Boiardi, the Jon Bon Jovi of his time). Note primitive pizza.

Blue Ribbon Tea On The Rocks - In some ways, the Fifties must have been really boring. Proclaiming that Blue Ribbon Red Label Tea Bags are ‘full weight’ is a selling point from a more bland era. Yawn. Poor old Canada even had to be instructed how to make iced tea.

Clover Leaf - New And Different Tuna Rarebit! - Is that a blanket beside the plate? If so, how big is that food? Do giants have a favourite white sauce?

Swift’ning - Swift’s Brand Bland Lard Out Performs All Other Shortening - If there’s one thing more unsettling than a can of “bland lard”, it’s a can of bland lard with cartoon arms and legs juggling.

Published in Bratislava in 1964 the Projekt magazine was a regular periodical issued by the Society of Slovak Architects and so an 'official' mouthpiece sanctioned by the Government. Czechoslovakia, throughout its complex history, has always had a strong culture of graphic and industrial design and this cover is, to my eyes, a fine piece of work. Sadly no designer is given.

Everybody Loves A Sandwich! For Sandwich Treats For Everyone Count On Kraft - Bring on the Kraft sandwich treats! On second thought, we might give the stackers a pass; they seem to have sprung a leak.

French’s Mustard - Fire the food stylist! - Because hamburgers shouldn't look overdone …

Libby’s Sauerkraut:

Dear Libby’s Sauerkraut people,

About those Bacon Wrapped Kraut Kabobs - thank you for suggesting the ladle option, because never in a million years would our messy, clumsily pierced, half-baked bacon and sauerkraut kabobs look or behave like the visions of perfection in your ad.

Sincerely, Shelf Life

P.S. Please send us the 4 handsome Rosewood and stainless steel skewers, because we want to die trying.
