We’re down with the Margene caramel apples, and the pie crust looks fine, but for the life of us Shelf Life can’t figure out the Nippy Mustard Spread Quick Trick. Call us crazy, but why actually mix the mustard and marge – wouldn’t it be logical to spread one on each sandwich slice? And why are the peas ‘Parisienne?’

My redesign client, Advertising Age, has evolved its Table of Contents strategy dramatically over the past decade, to keep up with the changing promotional needs of the print edition as well as collateral brands. Here the TOC is spread across a Page 2-3 spread which amplifies the week's top inside stories as well.

Batchelors Wonderful Foods; Guest Husband - Before the 60s, England was un-Swinging and repressed. Witness this bizarre short story – in which Mrs. Geoff Average is rewarded with nylons (!) for feeding hubby ‘peaburgers’.

Heinz: 4 Prize Winning Easy To Fix Lenten Dishes - Another valiant attempt to magic up the beans. Libby’s, watch your back - the Heinz people have taken an eerily similar approach. The Heinz Beans And Fish Sticks dish features fish sticks ‘swimming’ atop the casserole. Which recipe constitutes the best use of baked beans? Shelf Life thinks that Mary Hale Martin and Mrs. S Crouch from Gas City, Indiana should take it outside. Faster, ladies, kill, kill!

Campbell’s Holiday Tomato Soup - In the land of vintage advertising, Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without an aspic recipe from Campbell’s. But in the 70s, when this ad was published, time was running out for the once-proud tomato soup jelly. Aspic was for old people like ‘Aunt Emma’, and would soon disappear entirely from the Campbell’s marketing repertoire.
Cover focusing on a luxury performance car show. Thanks to my team including: Scott C. Miller's photography, Josh Clark's photoshop and Lyndy Speidel's hair/make up. Only compromise was I had wanted a classic Ferrari for the vehicle and just couldn't make it happen.
Monarch Tea-Bisk Dumpling Mix - Terror for dinner! The closer we get, the more unappetizing it looks. Sometimes bigger isn’t necessarily better.
Check out the assumptions implict in this ad: 1) People had time to read short stories. (2) People enjoyed accounts of nostalgic, soothing non-events. (3) People felt an affinity with stock small-town American characters, such as tetchy grandmas and gruff, possibly ‘touched’ handymen. (4) People didn’t realize that in thirty years the whole thing would read like a chronicle of perviness. 5) That Hershey’s chocolate is good, when in fact everyone knows it is among the world’s worst brands.

Philadelphia Cream Cheese - Philly-Dill Scooper - Interesting. A pale blob lurking inside a scooped out cabbage, surrounded by vegetables. Why didn’t this concept catch on?
