Why is this ad illustrated with a line drawing and not photos? We know why - because someone saw the grim photographic reality of these recipes, panicked, and resorted to a cover-up. The truth is out there.

Heinz Vinegars – Help Yourself To A Prettier Figure - Girls!! It’s here - the dieting solution of our dreams!! Any woman can follow this easy plan. Simply (a) use plenty of Heinz vinegars in salads, and (b) apply false eyelashes and pose. Alright! Let’s do this.

Heinz Vinegar: Toss That Salad - Shelf Life was prepared to snicker at the likes of ‘Ketchup Dressing’ until we realized that, in their own way, these recipes convey the fundamentals of oil and vinegar dressings. Today, Salad Dressing 101 (and white vinegar) has disappeared from domestic advertising. But Shelf Life can and will snicker at this bizarre selling point: ‘Uniform In Strength’?!

Armour’s Treet: Lady, It’s Wonderful - We hate to admit it, but we’re not up on spiced peaches. They must be important - where would Cheese Treets be without them?

Kraft Miniature Marshmallows - Marshmallows Make Meringues! - Cupcakes topped with marmalade and miniature marshmallows? This recipe works perfectly in our era of over-the-top cupcakes – if you can find the teensy marshmallows.

The opening spread for a feature story about the negative impact plastic has on the environment. I love this mostly because it's my homage to the crying Indian commercials about pollution. Retouching props go out to Tymn Armstrong. Great job!

French’s Mustard - Fire the food stylist! - Because the closer meat gets, the better it should look …

Marvellous Tasting Marshmallow Choc Pie - The chocolate pie looks reasonable enough, but – are we missing something? Where does the chewing gum fit in? Maybe you eat the pie, then chew the gum. Or vice versa. Brain freeze!

Robin Hood Flour Savoury Bacon-Cheese Pie - Ah, the passage of time. Check out the archaeology of this Robin Hood flour ad – it’s plain that Chatelaine readers of 1960 were unfamiliar with quiche. Love that helpful note: ‘pronounced “Keesh Lorrayne”’. Bonn Appiteet!

Heinz Ketchup – $25,000 Worth Of Unusual Prize Recipes, - Featuring the dream team of … ketchup and pears? ‘Unusual’, definitely; ‘prize’, maybe not. Did we mention this recipe is served warm with cream?

Campbell’s Cream Of Mushroom Soup: $1.00 Dish Makes Four Servings - Another ad set in Hell. Shelf Life has encountered these types of dimly-lit, flame-coloured ads before, which must have been some kind of trend in the Seventies (after all, the Seventies were the decade of Brown). Not only does the casserole look like it’s bubbling away in a cauldron, but the wiener halves are truly demonic. The oil, how it gleams!! In Hell!!

Heinz Tomato Soup:

This ad speaks volumes to the culinary historian – it says a lot about portion sizes, cost, and everyday expectations in 1948. It seems curious to us that people enjoyed ‘Heinz India Relish’, ‘Jellied Tongue’, and ‘Open Faced Sardine Egg Sandwiches’. For some reason Shelf Life is touched by the thought of someone eating carrot and peanut butter sandwiches – with a side order of watercress – for their Late Supper Snack.
