Part of a 37-page special report that looks at the decade that's about to end and tries to connect the dots between all the upheaval that has taken place.

David Yellen shot this great portrait of Steven Sasson, an electrical engineer with his original prototype of the first all-electronic camera. Kodak apparently keeps this artifact under strict lock-and-key, only transporting it by hand on their corporate jet, so it was a real treat having access to shoot it.

The opening spread for a feature story about the negative impact plastic has on the environment. I love this mostly because it's my homage to the crying Indian commercials about pollution. Retouching props go out to Tymn Armstrong. Great job!

Marvellous Tasting Marshmallow Choc Pie - The chocolate pie looks reasonable enough, but – are we missing something? Where does the chewing gum fit in? Maybe you eat the pie, then chew the gum. Or vice versa. Brain freeze!

Robin Hood Flour Savoury Bacon-Cheese Pie - Ah, the passage of time. Check out the archaeology of this Robin Hood flour ad – it’s plain that Chatelaine readers of 1960 were unfamiliar with quiche. Love that helpful note: ‘pronounced “Keesh Lorrayne”’. Bonn Appiteet!

Heinz Ketchup – $25,000 Worth Of Unusual Prize Recipes, - Featuring the dream team of … ketchup and pears? ‘Unusual’, definitely; ‘prize’, maybe not. Did we mention this recipe is served warm with cream?

Campbell’s Cream Of Mushroom Soup: $1.00 Dish Makes Four Servings - Another ad set in Hell. Shelf Life has encountered these types of dimly-lit, flame-coloured ads before, which must have been some kind of trend in the Seventies (after all, the Seventies were the decade of Brown). Not only does the casserole look like it’s bubbling away in a cauldron, but the wiener halves are truly demonic. The oil, how it gleams!! In Hell!!

Heinz Tomato Soup:

This ad speaks volumes to the culinary historian – it says a lot about portion sizes, cost, and everyday expectations in 1948. It seems curious to us that people enjoyed ‘Heinz India Relish’, ‘Jellied Tongue’, and ‘Open Faced Sardine Egg Sandwiches’. For some reason Shelf Life is touched by the thought of someone eating carrot and peanut butter sandwiches – with a side order of watercress – for their Late Supper Snack.

Consumer, direct-to-mail catalog design for Quartermaster, a tactical gear supplier.

Premium Crackers - Awesome! But what is it, exactly? Oh, we get it – it’s a canned salmon, egg, and cream concoction, with sherry and tabasco, cooked and then ringed with saltine crackers. Like we said before: Awesome! And that pan and burner combo is classy. Come to think of it, this is the kind of fancy meal we’d like to serve at our wedding.

Kraft Marshmallows: Sunburst Yam Bake - If only we were planning a dinner party for eight year olds who like their vegetables with lots of sugar - we'd totally make this dish for them.

Opening spread for a story with 11 date suggestions. Visually played with the story concept by having ALL 11 dates showing up at once. Special thanks go out to model/actress, Kimberly Leemans, who actually provided the 11 dates as only she could.

Stork Table Margarine - It would seem that the whole food-is-the-way-to-a-man’s-heart thing also holds true for British guys. Note pot of tea on table.
