Then after Mircalla's clothes I bought one embroidery file from a site, and thought it was pretty so I tried it on some heavy brown fabric (think sofa weight!) I made a smock (or however to call/spell it?) out of the embroidery result and it went pretty good, considering the thickness of fabric. The blouse is old FB blouse.
The toadstools are made by me as well (by last summer), by clay and paint. I want to make a fairytale forest landscape (as one of the shelves of Funny Bunny tower), but that project is sleeping now....
Two layers of chiffon with random free machine stitching.
The hand dyed wool circles were surface decorated using painted Bondaweb and then machine appliqued to the top layer. Part of the sample has been burnt back using a heat gun and a soldering iron.
I used the Baroque Punk phoenix from Urban Threads as the basis for this, adding the ring and arrow to create a stylized mockingjay (from The Hunger Games).
I love the Mockingjay/Girl on Fire concept mash-up. I've been thinking about this idea since I read Hunger Games, but finally figured out my digitizing software sufficiently to execute it effectively.
It's stitched on a heavy white twill, destined to be made into a cover for my serger. (And I'll prob figure out other ways to use it as it's one of my favorites.)

This was my gift for the stealing game at the Christmas party with my quilty friends. It was the second from the last gift to be opened, and it WAS stolen during the game.
Frankly fabulous canvas wine carrier made for us by LeCabinet for Christmas. Yes, we can use it to go to parties, but also we shall take Tim Minchin's sound advice and 'Take your canvas bags, when you go, to the supermarket' and take it with us shopping to facilitate or even encourage the purchase of wine!
Norse Knot
I looked for designs based on a knot I like called the Josephine Knot but in the end I chose this simple design. I found it in a book of Celtic Cross Stitch by Anne Orr and Lesley Clarke which I was given buy my Sister-in Law Dorothy who was a gifted embroiderer. The authors say this is a Norse design characterised by the wide ribbon pattern and they call it “Serpent and knot” though I have played down the serpent part in my transfer of the design.
I chose space dyed linen which I had dyed myself and backed it with iron-on inter-facing on which I had already traced the design. I prepared two pieces so I could do a test piece. I stitched the design from the wrong side in straight stitch and then used satin stitch working from the right side. I used an open embroidery foot throughout and held the work in a small spring frame.
I thought the knot pattern might work well as “cut work” or Richelieu. I tried this on the test piece but the pattern looked better uncut. I experimented with satin stitch in different widths (2mm and 3mm) and stitch lengths 1/4 or 1/2) and turning ( the trick was to put the swing needle on the outside edge of any turn so the corner was reinforced) I found an old Bernina leaflet which explained the technique.
Now that so many machines could produce something like this using automatic and computerised patterns it feels a little old fashioned to produce this using very basic techniques but that is part of the challenge in exploring machine embroidery. I think the simple design and contrasting colour are effective

I cannot get over how lovely this design from Urban Threads is! The design is Whisper of Darkness.
I stitched it on some cyan colored towels and put them in my etsy shop if anyone's interested.
Zig-Zag stitch sample on dyed muslin and net. The stitching on the net was worked separately and then applied to the muslin background.
I prefer this method to using dissolvable fabric, although it can be tricky to work sometimes
Machine embroidered flash card for And stitches back to school stitchalong. Picture of my eldest son using shadows. Stitched with Sylko machine thread (36 weight) on to a linen canvas, which was then mounted on to a coarser linen canvas backed with woven iron on interfacing. This flash card is part of a pair, the other one being of his younger brother.
It took four stitch-out trials and numerous 'going in and moving stitches around by hand, one by one' efforts, but I finally got it about as good as I ever will ! This is a machine embroidered version of the MH logo - I digitized and plotted it m'self with Stitch Era Universal and Pulse Ambassador. 'Brody', my Brother 240He embroidery machine, did the rest. It's about 3.5" square.
Since it's a trademark, I can't sell or give away the design, but I can use it on my own stuff - which should make the next MH swap even more fun !
