I dislike the process of making a quilt as the precise nature of patchwork seems to be foreign to my nature.
However, sometimes a quilt is the only possible gift for a special occasion. This was one of them.
I made the quilt from some indigo dyed calico I made a while ago, and pieced and machine embroidered it.
Alison Francis helped me with the binding, thank goodness. Each time I make a quilt I say "Never Again" and this time I really mean it!
Showing part of the story of the Suffragettes.
I have gathered silk quite roughly to show that fabric can be strong when it is stitched together, just as the women gained strength from organising themselves into groups. Some of the costumes of the era show them wearing gathered and smocked blouses.
I have edged it with machine embroidery and then printed the words using a home made stamp . The added details are three pieces of enamelling and also some hand made barbed wire.
My new piece is called "Out of the Box" and will be exhibited in Ledbury as part of an Adhesion group exhibition at the Weavers Gallery there.
The major images are to be female as I've done a lot of androgynous figures of late and I wanted a change.
These females are not to be passive, but are to illustrate that ordinary women, leading ordinary lives, can break out of the "box" into which they were born.
This is the first embroidered figure I created, using machine embroidery on a background of thick felt.
There are ten shades of colour in this one piece and as all the images are created separately and not in a production line process, there is a lot of tedious threading and unthreading the sewing machine. I break the monotony by occasional seed planting in my small greenhouse!
Mixed media portrait of the Wolverhampton Suffragette, Emma Sproson who was imprisoned in Stafford Goal for her political activities.
I have stitched on to handmade paper and added paint, pigment ink and varnish.
It's been improvised, serendipidous, design-as-you-go. But I like the results.
Handpainted on muslin (tube acrylics) flowers fused and stitched to painted batting. Border: sunprinted with bleeding art tissue and liquid textile paints, then fused to heavy craft interfacing. Free-motion stitched flowers and leaves using size 12 hand-dyed variegated yarns.
Detail from a piece which is destined for exhibition next weekend. It will be shown at the Newman Brothers Coffin Factory in Birmingham, UK and will be entitled "A lament for an unheard voice".
My inspiration has been taken from notes found in the Shroud department where it was noted that for some burials it was required that female faces be shrouded as there was an open coffin tradition.
In this image I am machine embroidering around a poem I have written for this piece. It is ink jet printed on to silk which has been backed with two layers of cotton and then applied to hand made silk paper with added nuno felt.
Just done today - still has the Solvy topper. Rinsed but not sure I'll have time to get a good photo before it heads to the post office. Urban Threads new Snowflake design; 8CP RHI font; Aileen's Scarves on eBay for cashmere blend pashmina.

Appliqued piece created from vintage and recycled fabrics which are deconstructed and meticulously fused together using different textile techniques.
Haven't used the embroidery unit for my sewing machine in YEARS, but these new French inspired postal stamps may have me digging it out of the closet.
This one is sewn off on the Essex Yarn-Dye in Flax. I can picture this on the pocket of a messenger bag. . .

Workshop sample. Indian style mirror . Three part panel made from dyed, embroidered tea bag tissue paper with aded velvet applique
I've been snow bound in a cottage in Derbshire since New Year's Eve.
Luckily I had my sewing machine with me so I've had the time to do some experimental work. This is the result.
The background canvas has had a layer of tissue paper applied to it and then I overpainted with acrylic paint.
The face has been heavily machine stitched to distort the background ( gessoed calico). I have used strong colours as I intend to overpaint the whole with acrylic paint, diluted with acrylic medium.
The effect I am aiming for is a painted piece which will look sculptured and will have an underlying texture.
I have no idea how this is going to turn out which is exciting!
The face measures about 12 inches tall by 7 inches wide.
I used Urban Thread's Design for the Police Box on one side pocket, and made my own subway art design for the other pocket on this bag, incorporating UT's stars from their Ecliptic Constellations pack.
For the purse ornament (or keychain) I shrunk the UT design and used only the white windows and black outline to create a patch sort of thing.
This bag has a zippered closure and silver trim accents.
The inside is lined with a star print fabric in light blue, and has several inside pockets.
This is a gift for my future daughter-in-law!

The more cards I make, the more I panic. The fairies always start to look anxious too. These will be mounted on to a card background tomorrow. The figures are made out of scraps of newspaper and other oddments.
