My best friend, Frank Gramarossa, and I shared a 3rd floor studio apartment in the rear of this building from September 1980 to July 1981. At which time, he, his partner Steve Hannan and I moved to a second floor loft apartment at 22 East 22nd Street.

While visiting my grandson and wife at their Heinz Lofts apartment, I explored Pittsburgh with the zoom lens of my Canon SX40.

Heinz Lofts consists of five H. J. Heinz Company buildings that were built from 1913 to 1927. These Romanesque Revival and Beaux-Arts style buildings were added to the List of Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation Historic Landmarks in 2007.

I found it to be a comfortable place to live and with fascinating views

I visited these new-ish apartments in Wheaton in 2009. This one-bedroom unit has partial walls around the bedroom and no door, opening it up to the rest of the apartment. (It also allows the bedroom to be in the interior of the unit, freeing up the only outside-facing wall for the living room.)

The 1992 comedy "Wayne's World" was shot in and around the Los Angeles area. Cassandra's loft / apartment / studio was located in this building on the outskirts of downtown L.A. It is also right across the street from the Gasworks Club seen in the movie.

For Five Years I have thought that I did not have any Images Of Harrods Department store Within My Neglected Images Of London... I had in error thought that Harrods was located across the street from Parliament or Right In The Middle Of Piccalilli... so I could not spot the Store in any of the neglected Images... So how surprised that My Infamous Photo Acumen Actually did document the existence of Harrods five years ago (maybe it has been since gone out of business or made into a warehouse or a loft apartment complex)... But, whatever it is today, Harrods (I Think) had the World famous reputation of being the World's Greatest "Everything 99 (US) Cents Store and Refurbished Goods Discount Outlet." I understand that they later raised the Everything Price to $2.50 (US Dollars) but that might have been affordable for Mysterious Market Goods... Harrods had (I may be wrong on this) 16 World Class Michelin Rated 10 Star Gourmet Restaurants on Site that Offered Nothing On The Menu Except for Andy Capp Fries Bagged Potato Snacks... Had I eaten there, I would have enjoyed that Menu! (My Apologies to All, Especially Harrods If There Is any sort of silly misinformation in this bogus caption)

This building, and many others adjacent were once the hub of the tobacco industry in Durham. They are now being converted, with good results, to residential, entertainment, retail and office uses.

This building was originally constructed as a tobacco warehouse; the fresh product was hauled in, dried and cured, and then shipped out

That's funny, I thought that ibooks had white keyboards. That's how they come from the factory, but sometimes things change.

I'm not sure where the story begins, but we pick it up on a march day back in 2000. I was having a lunch-time job interview with one of those dot-coms. And I was showing off my portfolio of websites while we snacked on appetizers. I reached to point to an innovative form that I had put together. My arm however clipped a saucer of olive oil (placed for bread dipping) sending the saucer into a flip. The oil hung in the air for a moment, then began its descent onto the keyboard. A later examination would show that the letter C was the point of direct impact. Things get kind of blurry from there. But I remember the boss man of the company suggesting that I suck the olive oil out. I did. And I credit that move for two things, getting the olive oil out of the seams that would have lead it to the motherboard, and getting me the job offer(I didn't accept). It never really did come clean though, there has always been a little olive oil in there. Fast forward a few months, and the keyboard is officially shot. Apple wasn't selling replacement keyboards for the ibook, but I was able to track down a bronze g3 powerbook keyboard. It arrived on a cold friday in Dec. 2000 and I installed it that night, alone in a unheated room of a drafty loft apartment overlooking the bowels of New York City (Canal st.) Two months later, I met my wife.

I guess I should also interject that during the time when the keyboard was dying and the olive oil seaping around, I also tricked this baby out with a 12GB hard drive and yellow dog linux. I already had the case open for the monthly cleaning, why no soup her up.

But alas, love (of a woman) and a new powerbook sent this baby off to my sister, where she lives a good life and has outlasted that blasted 1st generation titanium.

Last weekend we had a bit of a getaway - an overnight in the loft apartment above our favorite bar. My parents watched our children and we had all the time to ourselves... hasn't happened for a long time and now I'm hooked :).

Orange bicycle in DUMBO. The neighborhood formally home to manufacturers and warehouses began becoming primarily residential after the city's deindustrialization. Artists and other young homesteaders seeking relatively large and inexpensive loft apartment spaces for studios and homes began moving there in the late 1970s making the neighborhood a mecca for the arts, which it is still today.

This is a "vanished scene" because the tramway line was replaced by motorbus during 1980 - but the buildings remain. The structure at left housed a small grocery shop - as it does today. The factory at left has been re-purposed as "loft apartment" residences (it is marketed as the "Button Factory"). Columbia Avenue has been renamed Cecil B. Moore Avenue, after the African-American lawyer and civil rights activist, Cecil B. Moore [Cecil Bassett Moore, 1915-1979].

It was time to move, so I decided to take a few pics of the place during the process. I was only in this apartment for 13 months, but what a year it was!

I've marked off the items in the picture that I still have, 18 years later.

About 100 years ago, St. Louis was a major “fashion” center of the country.

The city had a lot going for it when it came to industrial and commercial potential. With its central geographic location within the US, intermodal transportation infrastructure, access to key material resources such as cotton and cowhides, and proximity to rural areas with large surplus labor forces, St. Louis was a true nexus.

Washington Avenue – generally between 12th and 20th Streets – became the center of the clothing and dry goods industries that flourished from the 1890s to the 1930s. Close to the core of downtown, open enough for large-scale real estate development, along a straight-shot to the riverfront docks and the Eads Bridge, and surrounded by both blue and white collar residential housing, this section of the city was the ideal location for a variety of clothing-related manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers. Today, it’s sometimes referred to as the city’s old “garment district.”

The effects of corporate reorganization, the Great Depression, and the widespread decentralization of wholesaling and manufacturing operations caused the Washington Ave garment district to fade from the 1930s onward. As Deborah Wafer wrote in National Register of Historic Places Inventory nomination form for the Washington Ave. Historic District in December 1986, “in all probability … the real future of the District lies in the adaptive reuse” of its buildings (Item 8, p. 5).

Over the last decade, the “adaptive reuse” has come through a form of gentrification. More specifically, many of the large office, warehouse, and manufacturing buildings have been converted into upscale loft apartment and condominium complexes with rents running somewhere between $800 and $1900 per month. Ground-floor units are largely occupied by specialty shops, restaurants, bars, and professional offices.

The image here of Bogen Lofts, on the northwest corner of Washington and N. Tucker Blvd (formerly 12th St), is one example. The building was constructed in 1902 for Lesser-Goldman Cotton on speculation; it was soon occupied by a Ferguson-McKinney, a dry goods wholesaling firm. Today, it’s made up of 1-3 bedroom loft condos and apartments.
