PHOTO NOTE: Minamata tells the true story of how at the end of his long career a seemingly washed up photographer (albeit a truly great one) would find the courage to create his most moving and socially important work. I’ll let you read the blurbs for yourself and recommend you watch the trailer, but this is a film that shows how photography - perhaps more so than any of the other visual arts - still has the power to change the world.

“Available light is any damn light that is available!” – W. Eugene Smith

If there’s one quote that gets to the essence of Gene Smith as a photographer, than that’s it. Straight to the point, no nonsense, and it’s all about the light. William Eugene Smith was born in Kansas in 1918. At 13 his mother bought him a camera and he never looked back. He is regarded by many as the best photojournalist of the 20th century and "perhaps the single most important American photographer in the development of the editorial photo essay." www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2017/aug/06/w-eugene-smi...

He was Life Magazine’s greatest ever photographer and also their most troublesome. A notoriously prodigious artist, who when fully engaged in a project became obsessive. The best example of this was in 1955, soon after joining Magnum Photos after being fired by Life Magazine. His assignment was to spend three weeks in Pittsburgh photographing the steel mills. Two years and 13,000 photographs later he gave up the project. But the photographs that have been seen are truly astounding.

He made his name in Life Magazine as a war correspondent. While photographing the battle for Okinawa he was seriously wounded and repatriated to the United States. His war photos are full of real pathos, like the one where American soldiers rescue a dying baby in the fields. As he once said, “What use is having a great depth of field, if there is not an adequate depth of feeling?”

But it would be a mistake to think of Gene Smith as a mere photojournalist. The range of his work is almost unparalleled in the history of photography.

Lovers of music often think of him as the greatest photographer of jazz there ever was. From his Bohemian loft apartment in New York City in 1957, he played host to jazz musicians as legendary as Thelonious Monk, Charlie Mingus, Bill Evans and the emerging genius John Coltrane. Not only did he make nearly 1,500 recordings of these sessions, but he took an estimated 40,000 negatives. press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/chicago/J/bo198266625.html

From the same loft window high above the street he took some legendary street shots – all in black and white because Gene Smith wouldn’t take colour seriously. Smith once said, “In music I still prefer the minor key, and in printing I like the light coming from the dark. I like pictures that surmount the darkness, and many of my photographs are that way. It is the way I see photographically. For practical reasons, I think it looks better in print too.”

The light coming from the dark. It was a technique he was renowned for: Chiaroscuro. Painters have used it for centuries, including Caravaggio.

So when in 1970 Smith’s final great assignment came to him, after years of substance abuse and professional neglect, he used all his immense technical skills to produce work that would change forever the way people thought about the social responsibility of corporations. In the fishing village of Minamata in Japan, people were dying of mercury poisoning from toxic wastes being discarded directly into the sea.

The fishers were catching and eating the highly toxic fish, children were born with gross deformities and people were dying in scenes reminiscent of the post-atomic blasts at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Smith joined the community and photographed their desperate plight and protests. He also found love again and his heart warmed especially towards the children. But these were not just any photographs one might see in the World News pages. From these dark images there emerged a light of hope, love and true compassion.

I will provide a link for you here to what I consider one of the greatest photographs ever taken (worth ten thousand golden hour sunsets) – possibly Smith’s finest and a true distillation of a life’s work. Only the hard of heart could not shed a tear of empathy at this purest form of a mother’s love that one could ever imagine. It is a modern equivalent of Michelangelo's Pieta. Truly the climax of the movie Minimata.

This is what photography should be! I’ll leave the final word here to Gene Smith himself:

"A photo is a small voice, at best, but sometimes - just sometimes - one photograph or a group of them can lure our senses into awareness. Much depends upon the viewer; in some, photographs can summon enough emotion to be a catalyst to thought."

W. Eugene Smith died of a stroke on October 15, 1978. He wasn’t quite 60.

I had to make a very difficult decision recently. With the economy

sucking royally my freelance gigs have almost all but dried up, save

for a single, very loyal client. In addition, energy prices for this

winter are going up by some 20% (thanks, Pepco). For the past number

of months I've watched my electricity bill slowly climb, to around

$300 for a loft apartment.

I finally decided to start crunching some numbers and found the

culprit: my Mac Pro. It takes about 600W of power to run the machine,

which is far, far more than just about every electronic item in our

home.

So, I decided to sell it. The plan for now? Use my MacBook Pro until

Apple starts shipping the LED Cinema Displays. Pick up one or two of

those. Then, hopefully in the next few weeks, the iMacs will get

revised. At that point, I'll buy one and use that as my primary machine.

I just no longer need the power (or the power consumption) the Mac Pro

provides. Do I regret it? Maybe just a little. But I think in the long

term I'll be much happier, even if I no longer have bragging rights.

That said, a gentleman is coming tomorrow with $6,500 cash and is

taking the entire set up. Here's what she looks like on her last night

in my home, just about ready to be prepped for delivery to her new

owner.

Move into Unit 254-A today and make it your own! A little loft like skybox with wonderful arched windows. The shutters that separate the main living space from the bedroom can be open or closed. Wood beam and trim accents compliment the exterior brickwork. A perfect little hideaway!

A quick upload from a recent family week in the amazing town of Nyköping. Having whizzed past the town en route to Stockholm courtesy of Ryanair's habit of flying people into the middle of no where, we decided to visit again, hire a car and simply explore the local area.

There's some incredible scenery just fifteen minutes drive from the airport, and I'll really struggle to use it as a base for Stockholm now - knowing what we'd be missing. Wonderful archipelagos of rocky islands and thick coastal forest.

This shot comes from the golf course where we got a loft apartment for the weekend. A quick wander around in the summer sunshine led me to a nearby house with that fantastic Scandinavian red timber boarding. The owners kindly agreed that I take a couple of pictures of their property, of which this shot (actually two shots, as I've manually blended in a little extra grass to give it breathing room in this 4:3 format) was my favourite.

I know there are people who'd want to go to town and HDR the hell out of it, but that's not my style. I really like the blaze of summery haze growing on the left, so I've just manually brought a few panels on a separate layer.

Hope everyone is having an amazing week!

These are the only pieces of furniture that are movable - everything else is studded into place. In theory, one could rearrange the furniture.

So, I'm still collecting pieces here and there for all characters that'll be in my photo stories. Here's another sofa I purchased. This one with accent pillows tailored for me will go to Brooklyn & Chris's loft apartment. Super excited...

Today is Debbie Harry's birthday. When she and Chris Stein founded Blondie in 1974 they, along with bassist Gary Valentine, lived in a loft apartment on the Bowery above where Globe Slicers and its impressive hand-lettered sign is today. The loft was also where Blondie rehearsed in the band's early days.

For Five Years I have thought that I did not have any Images Of Harrods Department store Within My Neglected Images Of London... I had in error thought that Harrods was located across the street from Parliament or Right In The Middle Of Piccalilli... so I could not spot the Store in any of the neglected Images... So how surprised that My Infamous Photo Acumen Actually did document the existence of Harrods five years ago (maybe it has been since gone out of business or made into a warehouse or a loft apartment complex)... But, whatever it is today, Harrods (I Think) had the World famous reputation of being the World's Greatest "Everything 99 (US) Cents Store and Refurbished Goods Discount Outlet." I understand that they later raised the Everything Price to $2.50 (US Dollars) but that might have been affordable for Mysterious Market Goods... Harrods had (I may be wrong on this) 16 World Class Michelin Rated 10 Star Gourmet Restaurants on Site that Offered Nothing On The Menu Except for Andy Capp Fries Bagged Potato Snacks... Had I eaten there, I would have enjoyed that Menu! (My Apologies to All, Especially Harrods If There Is any sort of silly misinformation in this bogus caption)

As the unofficial photographer at the architectural firm I work for I had the great pleasure in doing some shots of a project that is being finished up right now. One of the more interesting projects I've worked on...

Inspired by a funny comment about me being on my knees, “at least its not on one knee”. Which made me think about all the marriage and proposal posts i see in FB and flickr, and how you don’t see the other side. A huge shout out to Amanda Dench / Dench Design’s for actually putting a “no” animation in the proposal fire place. And to Mavenn for letting me use her for my warped ideas.

Its a joke, because seriously, if it was real, who wouldn’t say yes, i mean.... to share that sweet warehouse loft apartment? And there must be at least $12 worth of beer empties alone.

Walk or bike the Brooklyn Bridge, one of the most beautiful urban drives in the world. After and on your left is the neighborhood called DUMBO.

Dumbo, an acronym for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Brooklyn.

This is a very typical neighborhood with many brick buildings,a very beautiful architecture.

It was a manufacturing district, housing warehouses and factories. With deindustrialization it began becoming residential, when artists and other young homesteaders seeking relatively large and inexpensive loft apartment spaces for studios and homes began moving there in the late 1970s.

Currently, there are still some old buildings to renovate. On this photo, windows belong to one of these old buildings.

I used as a backdrop on this room the happy family living home, folded up and the front doors as the hall doors - Ryan and Poppy live with Ryan's younger brother Ricky and Younger sister Hannah in a loft apartment. Their bedroom overlooks a large park which is actually the window in my doll room. This gives me natural light for this diorama.

After a very rainy afternoon, I was delighted to capture this beautiful sunset from our loft apartment in Curitiba, Brazil.

Have a wonderful night / morning and thanks for the visit.

When I lived in my very first serious apartment.. it was a loft apartment but I made it work.. Just had to keep moving..

Lady of Lisbon...

I had passed by her door a couple of times a day. In fact, her door was just a few down from our rented loft apartment in the trendy Bairro Alto suburb of Lisbon. Each time I saw her I smiled and said “Bom dia.” and she’d smile back.

It was only on our last morning on our way back from breakfast that I stopped and went back... “Can I take your photo?” I asked, gesturing with the camera. She assented with a nod of her head.

“Obrigada” I said, thanking her.

----

Half an hour later we were negotiating the steep cobblestone street. Our luggage clattering over the stones as we heading towards the carpark and onto Porto. I looked for her again.

“Au’voir” she called out to me.

“Au’voir.” I replied. “Are you French... Francais?” I asked.

She smiled and waved...

“Bon voyage.” she called out as we continued down the hill.

VALENÇA DO DOURO (Portugal). Port wine cellars (Sandeman).

I shot with the band Author a few days ago. It was about -5 and we took a bunch of photos outside before conceding to the weather and moving into Eric's (far left) really neat loft apartment in St. Paul. Anyway, you should give them a listen, they have a great sound.

It's been great to be able to shoot some promos this winter, even in the extreme cold. Every time I do I realize how much more I need to work on non-live stuff. Hopefully this year I'll be able to work with more models and bands to make some of the things I picture in my head come to life.
