Downtown Albuquerque is the central business district of Albuquerque, New Mexico. It is where a large number of the city's highrise buildings are located, as well as being the center of government and business for the region.

Downtown is roughly defined as the area between Marble Avenue, Coal Avenue, Seventh Street, and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad tracks. The area on the east side of the railroad tracks is known as East Downtown or EDo.

Downtown Albuquerque is laid out in a standard grid pattern, with numbered north-south streets and named east-west avenues. Central Avenue (originally known as Railroad Avenue) is the main east-west thoroughfare through the center of Downtown, while Lomas Boulevard (originally New York Avenue) is a major east-west arterial through the north part of downtown.

The streets start with First Street just west of the railroad tracks and increase in number moving westward. Fourth Street was originally the main north-south thoroughfare through Downtown but today it is discontinuous, interrupted by Civic Plaza and a two-block pedestrian mall north of Central. Since these developments took place Second Street has been the main north-south street through downtown.

Fourth Street through downtown Albuquerque was part of U.S. Route 66 prior to the route's 1937 realignment. Afterwards, Route 66 ran along Central Avenue until its decommissioning.

Downtown Albuquerque is divided into six official districts, which are identified by a unified system of signage and icons.

Courthouse District - Located on the north side of downtown, this district is bounded by Marble Avenue, Roma Avenue, Second Street, and Seventh Street. It is named for the three major courthouses located at the intersection of Fourth and Lomas: Pete V. Domenici United States Courthouse, Bernalillo County Courthouse, and the New Mexico Metropolitan Courthouse.

Warehouse District - On the north side of downtown along the railroad tracks, the Warehouse District includes the area between Second and the railroad tracks, north of the Convention Center to Slate Avenue. As its name implies, this area contains mostly warehouses from the railroad era.

Plaza District - The Plaza District is the central area of downtown, bounded by Roma, Copper, Seventh, and the railroad tracks. It is centered around Civic Plaza and includes many of Albuquerque's large office and government buildings including the Albuquerque City-County Building, the Convention Center, Albuquerque Plaza, the Compass Bank Building, and the Albuquerque Petroleum Building. The Main Library of the Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Library System is also located in this district.

Arts and Entertainment District - This district is centered along Central Avenue and Gold Avenue east of First Street. It contains most of downtown Albuquerque's historic buildings as well as most of its shopping, dining, and nightlife destinations. Notable landmarks in this district include the KiMo Theater, Occidental Life Building, First National Bank Building, and Sunshine Building. There is a small concentration of government and office buildings on Gold Avenue which includes the Dennis Chavez Federal Building, Gold Building, and Simms Building. Amy Biehl High School is also located in this district.

Transportation Center District - This is the smallest district, encompassing the area south of Central Avenue and east of First Street. Most of the district is occupied by Alvarado Transportation Center.

Casa District - The southernmost part of downtown, the Casa District includes the area between Gold and Coal Avenue, extending all the way west to Tenth Street. This is a primarily residential district, with a large number of loft apartment buildings. The PNM Building is also located in the Casa District.

Now days only a select few artists have the means to own one of these apartments and capture the north facing light

"In the 19th century, Napoleon envisioned Paris as one of the most beautiful cities in all of Europe and set out to make that vision a reality. One of the first things he did was grant large portions of land in the center of Paris to his financial supporters. The result of that action was that people already living in Paris proper were driven out of the city itself to outlying villages, one of which was Montmartre.

Low taxes plus The inexpensive wine, food, living quarters and supplies, along with its Bohemian atmosphere, made Montmartre a destination of choice for artists of the day beginning in the mid-1800s. By the time the end of the century arrived, Montmartre had become one of the major artistic centers of Paris."

I spotted the lamppost shadow and made a few photographs of the shadow itself before I put myself in position across the street where I could include it in a photograph that had a little more substance. I then leaned against the cool stone building side and waited.

This is the story that unfolded (at least my interpretation anyway.)

Three historical buildings in one shot..

First one is Whitingham Church, originally sat on Town Hill in the 1800's and moved down to the current location in the early 1900's.

Next is Whitingham Store, originally was an antique dealer in the 1800's early 1900's was a store off and on until 2014 and became an antique shop again but that closed and it is now a Christmas shop now. It also houses the Whitingham Post Office.

And in the background.. Sadawga Springs, a former Hotel from the mid to late 1800's to early 1900's it was abandoned after awhile (Not sure how long but it was falling apart and held together by gravity) and by the 1990's and early 2000's, it was lovingly restored but using mostly lumber locally and they had to reuse some of the old rotting boards too apparently if I'm remembering correctly.. I lived here on my own on the 4th floor in a small loft apartment.. hard to believe that one time, the entire upstairs was one large room and is now 2 loft apartments, it's now a 9 room apartment building. When it was a Hotel, it housed many businesses plus the only doctor in the entire town and a Radio repair shop.

I shot with the band Author a few days ago. It was about -5 and we took a bunch of photos outside before conceding to the weather and moving into Eric's (far left) really neat loft apartment in St. Paul. Anyway, you should give them a listen, they have a great sound.

It's been great to be able to shoot some promos this winter, even in the extreme cold. Every time I do I realize how much more I need to work on non-live stuff. Hopefully this year I'll be able to work with more models and bands to make some of the things I picture in my head come to life.

Tutors comments - Mostly fairly positive. Suggested that the 'snug' area more traditional than the rest of apartment,. Should have included key peices of furniture on Samplboards and Perspective of Entrance seemed too big (I drew it from a grid off the scaled drawing as if standing at the doorway to Living area) Also could have included more perspective drawings ( I added about 8 rough sketch perspectives to present to client but not mounted)

For Five Years I have thought that I did not have any Images Of Harrods Department store Within My Neglected Images Of London... I had in error thought that Harrods was located across the street from Parliament or Right In The Middle Of Piccalilli... so I could not spot the Store in any of the neglected Images... So how surprised that My Infamous Photo Acumen Actually did document the existence of Harrods five years ago (maybe it has been since gone out of business or made into a warehouse or a loft apartment complex)... But, whatever it is today, Harrods (I Think) had the World famous reputation of being the World's Greatest "Everything 99 (US) Cents Store and Refurbished Goods Discount Outlet." I understand that they later raised the Everything Price to $2.50 (US Dollars) but that might have been affordable for Mysterious Market Goods... Harrods had (I may be wrong on this) 16 World Class Michelin Rated 10 Star Gourmet Restaurants on Site that Offered Nothing On The Menu Except for Andy Capp Fries Bagged Potato Snacks... Had I eaten there, I would have enjoyed that Menu! (My Apologies to All, Especially Harrods If There Is any sort of silly misinformation in this bogus caption)

Five best friends, all married, decide to share a loft apartment. In this loft they meet their mistresses and conquests. Everything seems perfect, until one morning the body of an unknown young woman is found in the loft. The group of friends begin to suspect each other and it soon becomes clear that they know far less about each other than they had initially thought.

I actually quite like this shot. Too bad it's a little blurry, otherwise I would put it on figure-ground.com/.

By the way, this is one of the best-designed mix-use mega highrise projects I've seen anywhere. It's simple and modern. It's done by a Beijing-born Japanese architect, Riken Yamamoto. It's like a New York loft apartment building done in the style of a typical Vancouver building. Quite handsome. And the massive complex as a whole creates very interesting visual textures at the street level.

Beijing and China have finally moved away from tacky architecture, but they're unfortunately still stuck in the mindset of using tacky English names for their great new bulidings. The current buzzwords seem to be "Soho" and "MoMA." Everything is Soho-this, or MOMA-that. They're co-opting these place names from NYC to lend cachet to their projects.

Sad.

But you want to know what's even sadder? Here in Taipei, we have buildings call MOMA as well. Except, we don't have the good architecture to offset the terrible naming. So it's just tacky names on tacky buildings. Even worse, there's one called, get this, LV. I rather sleep on the street than live in a "luxury" building called LV. Oooo, it's so luxurious it's called Louis Vuitton! Sigh.

Plaque on the Mayo Building, 420 South Main Street, Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Mayo Brothers, who had established a thriving furniture business in 1904, built this building in 1909. They used half the space for their own business and rented the rest of the building as offices for oil companies. As the demand for office space increased, the Mayos built an identical five story building at 418 South Main Street in 1914. In 1917, they added five more stories to each structure, and operated them as one building. Profits from the Mayo Building financed later additions to the Mayo real estate empire, which included the Petroleum Building in 1921, the Mayo Hotel in 1925, and the Mayo Motor Inn in 1950. The Mayo Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008. In recent years the building was converted to loft apartment use.

I love these SO MUCH. Ahem.

Foods you like, despise, can't eat (allergies, etc.)

I like salty, chocolate and salty-chocolate. The higher the proportion of the butter, the higher the probability that I will like it. I despise nuts or fruit fillings; these things are great by themselves, but not in things.

Coffee vs. tea? Do you have a favorite kind?

Tea. So very much tea. Green tea is dead to me. I drink a lot of chais and love loose leaf tea.

Where do you live? (climate, big city/small town, etc.)

I live in Philadelphia, in a really funky, young neighborhood that borders on a really wealthy neighborhood. Best of both worlds! Philly is in the Mid Atlantic, so our Springs are really unreliable, and it can be 90 and humid one day, then 30 and snowing the next. The only constant is humidity. Humidity is gross.

Favorite yarns / fabrics? Any yarn you want to try but haven't yet?

I knit a lot, and love wools. Semi solids and hand-dyes are great, but I also love workhorses like Cascade and Ella Rae. I don't really knit a lot of very fine lace weight or bulky yarns, but otherwise, I love yarn. I love MadTosh, Sundara, Fiberphile and similar.

I am learning more about fabric. I've been sewing more dresses and shirts, which is really fun. I also do some quilting, but my machine isn't really powerful enough to handle anything beyond the piecing. My favorite fabrics are cheekily British or something that could be from the 40s-60s. In general, I like cottons, but only because that's almost all I've handled.

Crafty pursuits - knit, crochet, spin, sew, quilt, embroider, make friendship bracelets, any of these or others?

Knitting things. Sewing things. Eating things.

Hobbies/pursuits/proclivities/passions (other than the aforementioned crafty ones, obvs)

I love to read and listen to books. I particularly enjoy histories that focus on single subjects (food, royalty, a place) for a long time, like 1491 or Cod. I like things that are weirdly-British, like misprinted china or bizarre pieces of tea services, like elephant shaped creamers.

What do you do in life? (job, career, school, family, etc.)

Ahahaha. I got laid off in December. That might have something to do with the vast craft related output. When I was working, I worked for a museum. I live with my husband, Punsir, and our cat, in a drafty, loft apartment.

What makes you happy?

Making things. Reading things. Learning things. Top 40 radio. Clean laundry. Sunshine. Light breezes. Things that look and smell really clean, and are alphabetized. (OCD? What? Me?)

Into makeup? Is there anything you want to try, for example: Revlon lip butters, lip balm, a particular kind of mascara, brush, etc. (Think inexpensive- we’re obvs not swapping UD Naked Palettes here.) ;)

Holy Shit, makeup. Yes. All of it. I blame Bertha.

I love lipsticks, butters and heavily pigmented balms. I tend to the more saturated end of the lip spectrum (to whit: Nars in Heat Wave, above). I love eye shadow and liners in bright or shimmery colors. I love it. All of it. Makeup, hooray!

Into nail polish? Any favorite brands, favorite colors, or specific shades you covet?

I like polish! Especially now that I'm not so hard on my hands, it's easier for me to paint my own nails. I love all color regardless of brand: Butter London and Wet'n'Wild both hang out in my Polish Bowl (see above about being clean and organized). I have a lot of greens, pinks and purples, but always love corals, reds, and other crisp, preppy colors.

Random favorites -- colors, flavors, scents, books, movies, TV, magazines, genres, time of day, motifs (foxes, bees, squirrels, owls, beavers, mushrooms, bats), etc.

I am very enthusiastic about ALL THE THINGS.

Colors: Byzantine mosaic colors. Dusty, aged colors. If Catharine the Great would have liked it, I will too.

Flavors: salty, sweet, chocolate.

Scents: I like clean, crisp scents, or floral for daily use. I wear perfume every day. I alternate between a Japanese perfume and some Jasmine that I got at the Body Shop. When I'm feeling luxe: Chanel No. 5.

Movies, tv, music, books: I love TV! The Wire, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, etc. Carefully wrought, intense dramas have my number. I also love Torchwood and 30 Rock. For books, I read voraciously, but especially histories, biographies, science (both pop and technical) and novels. I get cranky when something gets a lot of press and I haven't read it, so I try to read everything that tops the NYT Best Seller list.

Motifs: Arts and Crafts, William Morris, Liberty of London. Slightly unexpected juxtapositions: I have a carpet from the Middle East that has a tiny helicopter in an otherwise super traditional scene.

Time of day: The part when I don't get sunburned.

Other stuff: I love jewelry and fun, vintage things. Would your 80 year old grandmother deem it "too ostentatious?" That's for me.

Yay!

Another renovation project changing over an old downtown warehouse building into apartments. This building sits directly across from the Union Depot.

The 1892 Powell Building, at 105 Hudson Street, is an uncommonly noble work for an industrial district. Designed in 1892, the then-young firm of Carrere & Hastings, who went on to become the architects of the New York Public Library and Manhattan Bridge arch, its ground floor, once used to display chocolate, now features raw fish at top-rated sushi restaurant, Nobu New York.

In 1890 Henry L. Pierce, head of the Walter Baker Chocolate Company in Dorchester, MA, hired Carrere & Hastings to design a radically different type of building for the area. Baker's chocolate cooking product was one of the staples of the company, which is now part of Kraft Foods. Pierce gave the new building his own name. Although the Baker Company had offices there, it appears that 105 Hudson Street was his personal investment.

The Pierce building was designed as a 10-story building, but wound up as seven stories, in cream colored terra cotta and light orange brick. The French neo-classic style, deeply rusticated ground-floor marble and giant engaged columns made it appear more like a Paris office building or a London bank. Most of what is now Nobu was used to display the Baker company's chocolate products. The upper floors were divided into smaller offices of 300 to 500 square feet.

Pierce died in 1896, and in 1903 his estate sold the building to Alexander Powell, a candy manufacturer. In 1905 Powell had his architect, Henri Fouchaux, enlarge the Pierce building to 11 stories, and also expanded it north on an additional lot on Hudson Street; bronze lettering high up on the Hudson Street front reading "Powell Building" was installed at that time.

In the mid-1970's the developer Joseph Cazana bought 105 Hudson Street and converted it to a co-op, but with a twist. Only floors five and above were residential; the second through fourth floors were sold as offices. The upper floors were generally gutted, and a typical loft apartment on the ninth floor is expensively finished, with the heavy columns of the old office plan rising in unexpected locations. A few of the offices were left intact, with their original doors, for use as bedrooms.
