We’ve had our grandson staying

(This was before Lockdown)

We’ve all been to the seaside

And then into the town

He knows his ‘Ps and Qs’ and things

He helps around the house

He’s always very cheerful and

You never hear him grouse

He’s helped us set up Skype and Zoom

So we can keep in touch

When he goes home and we’re alone

We like that very much

But there’s one thing that‘s the best of all

And that earned him a banknote

He’s shown us how the TV works

And programmed the remote!

Not much festive cheer ..........

Carolgate, Retford. Normally one of Retford's busiest streets.

The wife said “Get a hobby”

“Just get out from my feet”

So I surfed around the internet

And Twittered out a Tweet

I found a film: ‘The Birdmen’

When prisoners escaped

They went and built a glider

(It was one they went and maked)

And then I saw ‘Aladdin’

And that gave me ideas

I thought I’d fly the carpet

(Perhaps a new career?)

I first tried ‘Hocus Pocus’

When I had made the thing

It didn’t make the carpet fly

Despite its mystic ring

I then tried ‘Izzy Whizzy’,

‘Hey Presto’ and ‘Shazzam’

But none of them worked either

For this frustrated man

That’s it! ‘Abracadbra’

Which made it levitate!

It’s flying round the attic now

But , hold on, no, just wait

There isn’t any exit

(We’ve a quite small loft hatch

And I don’t think she’d be happy

If I burrowed through the thatch)

So my carpet will stay secret

My genius unseen

I’ll just fly around my attic

On my Axminster Machine.

I'm off on a key worker mission during 'Lockdown 2' to keep the busy Port of Liverpool container handling equipment running. Sounds grander than it really is.

Today I have an interesting car - a KIA Niro Self Charging Hybrid. It has just over 1,900 miles on the clock. Driving at low speed it goes to silent EV only mode which is pretty cool.

Not unsurprisingly Enterprise had a lot of cars on the forecourt.

A quiet Bullring with the Christmas lights up.

Due to the pandemic, no market here or Snow Dome, so the Bullring has put up the usual Christmas lights and artificial Christmas tree.

St Martin's Square Christmas Tree

I've taken these with my Lumix GX80 and mini go-pro.

I'll go back with my proper tripod, when the weather is dry and still.

Trooping Funnelcap.

Identification – Large – fully grown caps can be easily 20cm in diameter; Strongly decurrent gills (running down the stem); Strongly funnel shaped when mature; Always a raised boss (bump) in the centre of the cap (you may have to feel for it); Inrolled margin (cap edge) on younger specimens; White spores; Pleasing sweet, floral fragrance.

Trooping (gregarious) – you will very seldom find one on its own. Similar species: clouded agaric, tawny funnel which is smaller and brown/tan coloured

The old wives' tale that you can carry an acorn around to stay forever young.

There's no special healing powers in these nuts, but many people believe regardless that carrying one around will keep them healthy. Why? The oak tree is known for its unusually long life—and in hauling around the seed of this tree, people hope to achieve that same longevity.

- bestlifeonline.com

Health Benefits

In 1 ounce of dried acorns you can get 2 percent of your total daily calcium and iron intake. Acorns are also a good source of folate, magnesium, phosphorus and potassium. They are naturally low in sodium, provide small amounts of protein and do not contain cholesterol. Since they are higher in calories and carbohydrates, you do not want to eat too many of these roasted nuts, but rather reserve them for treats around Thanksgiving and the fall season.

After work walk, down an empty and mostly closed High Street.

It was too windy for the tripod, but should calm down later in the week and I'll try to get some better photos then.

Poole 16.11.2020

The 2020 Christmas Tree is now up in the middle of the very quiet Great Western Arcade in Birmingham, with more than a week to go before the 2nd lockdown ends.

Was a lady taking some photos of it, so I took this one shot to the side.

Been back at work about halfway through the second lockdown so back in the City Centre.

Saw some more Voi eScooter's around town.

These eScooter's seen on New Street.

Not far from Pizza Hut.

Plus close to the site of one of the pub bombings of November 1974 (almost the 46th anniversary).

The digital billboard had a pandemic related message on it before it turned to Sprite.

9.11.2020.

Another stamp from my schoolboy collection.

My stamp album says of Aden:

'A strongly fortified British harbour and coaling station on the Red Sea: a centre for trade in coffee, feathers, hides and skins'.

Now part of the troubled country of Yemen, but between 1839 - 1967 Aden was under British administration.

Amazing what you come across on a local walk!

This chap was working out in his 'fresh air' gym.

A lovely afternoon with a bit of sun and mist.

Walking can boost your mind, body and soul, says Graham Barker. Walking is often called the perfect exercise. It’s remarkable something so simple – putting one foot in front of the other – can be so restorative and invigorating.

A wet Victoria Square in November without the Market.

Due to the pandemic, the Birmingham Frankfurt Christmas Market was cancelled in what would have been it's 21st year in Birmingham.

Instead, the paving works continues close to the Queen Victoria statue, without having to wait until the new year.

The Floozie in the Jacuzzi has also had it's floral garden removed, hopefully the fountain will be working again soon.

I've spent all afternoon cleaning. Nice and clean and new uplighter as I needed some more light, now working from home in winter.

Lockdown 2, at home 07.11.2020

The country awaits a Government announcement about what kind of festivities we can have:

- no mixing of households?

- just those in your bubble?

- two bubbles?

- a big family Christmas?

The one thing we do know is students will be home for Christmas.

15.11.2020.

Another couple of stamps from my schoolboy stamp album.

Two stamps from 1955, commemorating the 100th anniversary of David Livingstone's discovery of Victoria Falls.

Sunday morning walk in the quiet parts of town.

I put the zoom lens on the camera, for a change, lots of stepping back as I am used to the 12-32 lens.

Lockdown 2 day 18

22.11.2020

Today's Lockdown 2 Cartoon:

We’ve signed up for obedience class

My little friend and me

She doesn’t always do as told

And that’s the rub you see

When walking out and shouting “Fetch!”

She runs away for fun

And when the vicar comes for tea

She sits and licks her bum

We’ve been given this here dossier

With lots of things to do

Logistics too, the times and place

Now look, she’s got my shoe

I’m hoping that this class will work

She drives me round the bend

But even if it doesn’t then

She’ll still be my best friend.

Seen on Moat Lane in Digbeth after dark.

Closed until the 2nd lockdown ends.

Colmore BID Angels in Cathedral Square.

The main Christmas lights attraction near Birmingham Cathedral and Colmore Row.

No Christmas market due to the pandemic / restrictions, so the Colmore BID have put up lights to cheer people up after a hard year.

A dull wet day and the kittens are out to play.

Been busy at work during the week, so only the weekends can I see the cats and kittens playing around the gardens, on the fences and sheds.

Seen here two out of the four kittens.

we begin another four weeks of lockdown.

Personally, it will not make any difference to me. Since March 23rd I have kept myself "locked down"... and very happy I have been.

Today's Lockdown 2 cartoon from Andrea and me.

Grandad’s feeling grumpy

He’s gone and lost his bet

With Grandma ‘bout the TV show

And now he’s gonna fret

He said he knew the actress

That she was in that show

Grandma said she wasn’t

She said she that should know

He looked it up on Google

He said they must be wrong

He knew that she was in it

Grandma said “so long…”

It turns out that, it was not

The actress that he thought

He’d gone and bet a shopping trip!

His boasting came to nought

But I’m the real winner

Through Grandma’s betting fame

‘Cos now my poor old Grandad’s

Bought me the latest game.

(Grandma said he had to. I wonder if he’ll get me a PS5 too?)

The first Saturday of the 2nd lockdown. A walk down the Warwick Road in Acocks Green after a long walk down Gospel Lane.

Non essential shops, cafes, restaurants, bars and pubs are closed for 4 weeks.

First thing in the morning after 9am, had time before work to pop up to Paradise Birmingham to see the three red Christmas Baubles on Centenary Way, before going back towards the Colmore BID.

Lockdown 2 day 18

22.11.2020

Start of the 2nd Lockdown in England for 4 weeks. So went for an afternoon walk down to Yardley Wood and popped into the Trittiford Mill Pool, just before 3pm.

So was sunburst in the clouds on the Priory Road side of the mill pool.

The bank down to the River Cole was being cut down I noticed as I passed from Highfield Road towards Scribers Lane.
