This was our last walk on holiday. It wasn't a walk that had been recommended in any of the local guide books. Rather, it was one I discovered myself. It was a lovely walk, and perfect for dogs, as there was no livestock (or signs of livestock) anywhere.

Start at NG 936899 (OS Landranger map 19), just west of Little Gruinard. There is a small area for parking just beside the road (on the south side of the A832). Follow the track (not shown on older maps) south. In less than 100 metres you'll come to a gate announcing that this land is part of the Little Gruinard Estate, and that the fishing is private. As we weren't interested in fishing, we went through the gate, and followed the track for about 1.5 hours (and we didn't reach the end in that time), then we turned around and retraced our steps.

It occured to me en route that if we had carried on, we would have been able to walk back to Aultbea by picking up another track not far from where this track ended.

The only down-side of this walk for dogs is that there was not much water en route. We hardly passed any streams, and the dogs didn't really get a chance to have a proper drink until we came to the little lochan at 938873, which is where we turned around.

A local guide told me "Women can not wear high heels in this city because the sidewalks are steep and slippery. So it's a good city for short guys like you to meet girls." Thanks, I guess?

Day 1: Transfer from Marrakech to Imlil and to Mountain Refuge

You will be picked up by your guide and be driven direction south to the High Atlas Mountains for Toubkal trekking 2 days. We reach Imlil village after about 1 hour, a famous starting point for Toubkal ascents (1740m). Here you will meet our group muleteers and start walking. Discover the Imlil area and walk up passing through the holy man of Sidi Chamharouch, where you have a lunch break. Then continue hiking up to the refuge of Toubkal (3207m) where you will spend the night. 5 to 6h walking.

Day 2: Toubkal Refuge 3207m - Toubkal Summit 4167m - Imlil Valley 1740m - Marrakech

We wake up early to avoid the sunny and after having breakfast around 5.00am we start the ascent climb. After enjoying 3h/4h walking up the hill, we will see all the best views of High Atlas Mountains and after a break on the summit we walk down towards Imlil by the same route. We reach Imlil, then we transfer you to Marrakech city. End of adventure Toubkal trekking 2 days with best guides.

As explained to us by our local guide, there was a time when the Maasai believed all cows belonged to them. As they travelled the land, if they came across a cow under someone else’s care they would ask them, “Whose cow is this?” If the owner responded, “This is my cow!” the Maasai would take it from them. However, if the owner replied “This cow belongs to the Maasai!” they would allow him to keep it. These days they are apparently much more relaxed about it.

The local guide, Paige, is demonstrating the depth of the muskeg pools. Muskeg is a dangerous kind of swamp that wild animals avoid.

An hour or so's drive took us through lovely countryside to the Roman ruins at Volubilis where we had an excellent guided tour in the lovely mid-afternoon sun before continuing on the rural landscapes to majestic Fez.

Prom for December 2011

Today was a full day with our local guide Randy out on the land. We started by visiting a Thule culture archeological site where we saw excavations and a reconstructed dwelling, along with lots of Arctic Poppies and some Loons on the pond next to it. Next we travelled north past the airport to the Tupirvik Campground, and on to 3 Mile Lake, where we stopped briefly. The next stop was at 5 Mile Lake, where our guide Randy set up a base with a windbreak tent, to enjoy tea and bannock. From this base we set out on a 6 km hike over the tundra to a pond noted for family of Eider Ducks. Returning from that pond, we spotted the remains of a Musk-ox calf, and took in some view from a bluff above the river that drains 5 Mile Lake. Following the shoreline back to base, we saw a family of Brant Ducks. We returned to Resolute Bay for dinner, then reconnected with our guide Randy for some exploring of the coastline SE of the hamlet of Resolute Bay. To end the day, our last stop was a visit to the memorial of the August 20, 2011 crash of a First Air B373. An episode of the TV series "Mayday" featured this sad disaster.
