On our Wales tour we came to Pembroke Castle on a rainy morning and were greeted by the local guide with the words “Sorry for the bad weather. Please come back when the sun shines again ”. She had the laughs on your side.

A rare, parasitic, rootless and leafless plant, Rafflesia arnoldii is the largest flower on Earth. It can attain a diameter of nearly a meter (3 ft) and weigh up to 11 kg (24 lb). The buds of the Rafflesia take many months to develop and the flower stays in bloom up to 14 days. It is an incredibly rare site to see in the wild.

Photographed in Taba Penanjung rainforest, Bengkulu province, Indonesia.

The path takes at least 5 hours to walk from Anakena Beach on the North Coast ( flic.kr/p/tbxxgD ) to the Ahu Te Peu on the West Coast ( flic.kr/p/tbmERR ).

North - Northeast - West

It is 13.5 km / 8,3 miles.

It needs time and energy. It is the most dramatic trail. Little has been changed in the past 200 years.

There is no water and very little shade on the way.

There is no way to cycle, as there are no defined trails and LOTS of volcanic stones spread out, The steep desert of cliffs, bays, hills, caves, etc. it's a complicated hike.

Finding caves and petroglyphs without a local guide is almost impossible. Not for me. There are no signs, signs and demarcations. I used various markings on written maps and guides. Research and more research. You have to know how to read maps to find the archaeological points.

Total disrespect for tourists.

The largely untouched North Coast is one of the island's gems where few people go. As there are no roads in this part of the island, it is unattainable, except on foot or riding a horse, and with an expert guide in these regions.

Rafflesia arnoldii is a member of the genus Rafflesia. It is noted for producing the largest individual flower on earth. This species is listed as "critically endangered" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

This Amphitheater is carved right out of the mountain rock. It's a little different from the other ancient theaters in Jordan because of its (grand) setting and the pinkish-red color. Surrounded by a lot of small Nabataean tombs, affirming that it's a part of Petra. The panoramic views from this place, along the trek to the Treasury viewpoint, are also spectacular.

Rainforests of Bengkulu province are also home to the world's tallest flower and possibly the smelliest flower Titan Arum (Amorphophallus titanum), known locally as Kibut or also known as bunga Bangkai.

The flower is a rich red, with a huge yellow stamen protruding from its core, when it throws up a spectacular flower spike than can stand over 2 m (6.5 feet) high. Titan Arum / Kibut creates such a stink because when the flower is fully open, it gets hot and emits a repulsive scent that is attractive to its pollinators. It only lasts about 3 days before collapsing. Read more at my blog virtualadrian.blogspot.com/2013/03/kibut-worlds-tallest-f...
