Our local guide, Annie Adair, brought tears to my eyes telling this story about the arch: At the end of WWII, the Germans were fleeing the Italian countryside. To slow down the advance of the Allies, they planned to blow up Volterra's beloved arch. Horrified, the citizens of Volterra hatched a daring plan. In the middle of the night, the women, children, and wounded veterans of the town crept to the arch and quickly and quietly dug up the cobblestones in the street. They then stacked them in the arch, effectively blocking entrance into the town from that point. When the Germans saw what they had done, they moved on and left the arch alone since their goal of creating an obstacle had been achieved. The courage of these Volterrans is still celebrated today. Annie told me a festival occurs to celebrate the preservation of the arch and that some of the children who helped dig up and stack the cobblestones in the arch are still alive and living in Volterra. What brave people!

It was 12:30 pm when we met Nahim , our local guide, at the village of Wadi Ram (???? ???), a valley cut into the sandstone and granite rock in southwest Jordan. The wadi has been inhabited by many human cultures since prehistoric times including the Nabateans - leaving their mark in all kind of forms, nowdays the valley is populated by Bedouin tribes. Wadi Rum may be best known for its connection with British officer T. E. Lawrence, who based his operations here during the Arab Revolt of 1917–18. by fall Nahim set the Jeep in the direction of the camp whose located on a small hill observing a large territory of the Wadi. A local guide takes us ona boat trip around Mekong river, supposedly 2km wide. Goes on to tell us about the coconut monk, banana wine, how they made coconut candies, which aren't in the video. lol
My first stop with a local guide Mi at Wat Arun on the West (Thornburi) Bank of the Chao Phraya River. It used to be the home of the Emerald Buddha, before the capital and Palace was moved to the other side of the river. Wat Arun is situated on the Bangkok Yai District.

Saturday 19 July 2008: Our local guide related the following story: During the 30 years war, the Swedish Army besieged Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Rothenburg’s Mayor Tilly, in an endeavour to get the Swedes “on-side”, offered the Swedish commander a hearty meal, including a 5 litre tankard of ale. The Swedish General jocularly suggested that if Mayor Tilly could drink the huge tankard in one go, he would spare the city. With a massive effort, Tilly did just that. The Swede kept his word and spared Rothenburg. Although he kept his troops out of the city and did not sack it, Rothenburg was still required to feed the Swedish army camped on their doorstep.

The charming Austrian town of Melk is under the watch of the 11th-century Benedictine Melk Abbey, which, together with its 18th-century Baroque abbey church, sits on a rocky promontory overlooking the Danube.
A local guide gave us a run-down on the building, and led us through the monastery.
