A good trip depends on many things and one of these things is the guide. We had a wonderful guide (Haval Qahraman) who connected us with a great local guide who everyone calls ABU HAIDER but his real name is Razaq. He is the perfect person to take a boat tour with into the Marshes and inside the reed homes. He navigates this area like his ancestors did. He also sang a few local songs to us during the boat ride. It was a great trip.

We toured Essaouira with a local guide, starting at the fishing port. There is a French-built fort there, the Scala du Port.

The fishing boats are jammed in to a small space. I had wondered how anyone could get a boat out! The answer is that there are men who work at the port who just get boats out and put them back in place. In return, the fishermen pay the boat movers with some of their catch.

You would not find this church without the aid of a local guide, or an OS map, it is quite modest and lacks a tower as a landmark. In fact the tower came down a long time ago, the nave got shortened, so might have been partially destroyed by the tower collapse and then the chancel was also shortened. So we have a much reduced church here, standing in fairly open ground, there is no village, just a very modest handful of houses. The west wall of the church is quite odd, no doubt a rebuilding using some of the original stone as it features an unusual assembly of ashlar, mostly cut into triangles, set into the regular flint walk, very different. The interior is very modest, once I managed to master the reluctant W door.
