Our Local Guide, Orlando, took us into the refuge at Bermejas, near Playa Giron, and tapped this hollowed Palm Tree. As if on cue our little Owl poked his face out. Yo might be able to see one at top peering down.

Our local guide and donkey drivers from the previous day. They would continue with us until lunch, where we would receive "fresh donkeys" (as the literature stated) and a new guide for the next community. They were quite insistent on having a photo taken.

TESFA (Tourism in Ethiopia for Sustainable Future Alternatives) runs treks through the communities of Meket Woreda, North Wollo. It's a great opportunity to get off the beaten path. We visited villagers at their homes, churches and farms, viewed beautiful highland scenery, and were swarmed by very excitable children at every turn--not one who wanted anything more than to shake our hands.

Tonight we went with a local guide into the jungle for a night safari. Got to see a bunch of spiders, lizards, snakes, and wild cats. We crossed the river over a fallen tree with a pretty decent drop to what sounded like a really fast current. It would have been scary during the daytime, but at night it was terrifying. I wish I would have remembered my headlamp. Anyway, we had a blast and I'm still alive! Tomorrow we do a full day hike! #KhaoSok #Thailand

On our first day in Goreme, Turkey we went for a trek through some of the amazing landscape that is Cappadocia. Halfway through our journey we encountered these two dogs who were insistent on making friends with us. They would run 10 or so metres in front of us and wait for us to catch up then direct us on which way to go. We followed them for hours and they lead us to some amazing hand cut cave dwellings including the one pictured here. True local guides of the area.

End-of-Year trip to the Oregon Coast 12/30 - 12/31/2006 by Red Bat

We hopped the $15 round-trip bus from Portland to Tillamook with our bikes. In town we biked to Brian Cameron's house, took a 5 mile hike on Cape Lookout to see whales (none seen, but sealions spoted), a nice dinner out and a conversation by the fire. The next day, the last day of 2006, we biked back to town along still rivers with birds, and sleepy farmsteads with an amazing sky. Then a visit to the Blue Heron for wine tasting, and the Tillamook Cheese factory for cheese & icecream. And after that a short visit to the Pioneer Museum to visit the talking Smokey the Bear.

My local guide, Marco, explained to me that the buildings lean forward--and have hooks at the top--to assist residents with moving their goods into upper-floor apartments. Apparently it's common to hoist large items up with a winch (standard equipment with moving vans here) since the staircases are typically too narrow to carry them up.

A good trip depends on many things and one of these things is the guide. We had a wonderful guide (Haval Qahraman) who connected us with a great local guide who everyone calls ABU HAIDER but his real name is Razaq. He is the perfect person to take a boat tour with into the Marshes and inside the reed homes. He navigates this area like his ancestors did. He also sang a few local songs to us during the boat ride. It was a great trip.
