PART 2: THE GUIDES

A good trip depends on many things and one of these things is the guide. We had a wonderful guide (Haval Qahraman) who connected us with a great local guide who everyone calls ABU HAIDER but his real name is Razaq. He is the perfect person to take a boat tour with into the Marshes and inside the reed homes. He navigates this area like his ancestors did. He also sang a few local songs to us during the boat ride. It was a great trip.

a muslim village built entirely on water. a local guide told us that before the tsunami even hit, the elders knew something bad was happening to the sea, and the whole village evacuated off to higher ground. the water levels rose, and apparently just missed flooding the houses.

What a mess, people were camped out all over this thing. Apparently you climb the first two pitches in the dark then wait for daylight to continue, this helps place you at the front of the line. I was immediately not interested in continuing, Mike took about 15 more minutes to come to the same conclusion. This left us one choice, the other Comici line: The Yellow Edge.

We toured Essaouira with a local guide, starting at the fishing port. There is a French-built fort there, the Scala du Port.

The fishing boats are jammed in to a small space. I had wondered how anyone could get a boat out! The answer is that there are men who work at the port who just get boats out and put them back in place. In return, the fishermen pay the boat movers with some of their catch.

We arranged for a local guide to meet me with a couple of mules, and he and I ride up to Aaron's tomb over the course of the afternoon. Talk about a harrowing trip - the mule has to carry me up the side of the mountain to the faint speck of a white building you can see in the distance.
