Lightning over Perth, Western Australia. This was a storm that came out of the blue on 1st March 2017, and one that was a long time coming. No decent storms in Perth since 2015!
Branchy.
Small convoy of lightning makers lofted the Rim last night, aiming just east of Flagstaff. Instability (SB/ML) looked like trash north of I-40, so that's where I set up. Catch them as they arrive in spots where one can see. Most cases they would've dissipated after that, but these kept on trucking northeast. Mesoanalysis data updated at some point later & plotted out that oh yea there was a touch of elevated instability up that way. Should've picked Leupp Rd for closer, crispitier shots—but hindsight being what it is.
6 to 12 images are superimposed to create this composite. Dusk was occurring quickly thus the reason for the odd coloration.
Some individual stokes can be viewed:

This is a stitched panorama of 5 or 6 images taken within a few minutes of each other.
Another one from my archives - I liked the concept of a powerful force of nature interacting with one of the most fragile plants in nature.
Lightning between Cape May, Cape Henlopen and Rehoboth Beach. If you enlarge the photo, a few lights from Cape May can be seen on the horizon.
July 29, 2012 - Kearney Nebraska US
2012 was a dry summer and the storm season was few & far between. Last recorded rainfall for us was back in early June. Working constantly I had that Sunday evening off and was able to get out to get a few snaps of this oncoming storm.
Finally received some much needed moisture. Strong thunderstorms had formed out in western Nebraska & were dying as they were entering southwest Buffalo county here in South Central Nebraska.
No warnings on this storm but she was producing some exceptional views of the core. Incredible cloud to cloud and cloud to ground lightning strikes pummeled the earth . This storm cell was proceeding to the northeast from the southwest. It crested right on the northern outskirts of the city. Couldn't have asked for better light & storm. Many photographic gems in this set!

Lightning over Perth taken from our balcony. The lightning looks a lot closer than it is. I suspect it was way out over the ocean but it's hard to tell.
In the (till now) extremely dry summer of 2018, an evening thunderstorm formed unexpectedly just south of Rotterdam.
I took my car and together with my son we drove to a nearby lake, just north of Rotterdam to capture some lightning shots in the evening light.
Before the rain arrived last night the storm seemed to hang overhead and bolts flew from cloud to cloud. This is the total from 7 x 10 second exposures looking straight up.
It was raining hard two days ago, but it wasn't just raining,,,there was a thunder and lightning also...Excellent mix! (:

A distant storm on the horizon. From the Sunset Field overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia.
Revision lightens and goes more cool tones.
As the storm moved out of my frame, darkness allowed for a better capture of the cumulo-nimbus cloud in this 4 stacked image.
