Another rapid warm-up has resulted in a melt-off of the snow cover and given the resident birds an opportunity to feed. Quite surprising to see a flock of robins along with chickadees and downy woodpeckers.

This blossom emerged in the last two days after all the other flowers had already gone to seed and dried.

The majestic and well known Jokulsarlon glacier with its upstream situated lagoon absorbing the calving icebergs before they drift into the open sea.

This an interesting vascular plant that lack chlorophyll and is parasitic on mycorrhizal fungi that grow in association with plant rooots.

This afternoon, we encountered this pair of sandhill cranes while out for an afternoon walk around a local retention pond.

These catkins are the male flower of the hazelnut shrub. These form in the autumn and begin to extend and loosen in the spring, releasing pollen before the leaves emerge. The catkins are approximately 1-1.5 inches in length.

Melanistic gray squirrels are a subgroup of gray squirrels that occur in northern regions or their range. It is though that the dark coloration is a selective adaptation that enhances survival in colder climates, such as Michigan.

light, water vapor, and a worker power-washing concrete conspire to create a striking morning scene. it calls to mind the sweaty jungle discovery of some vine-wrapped ancient wonder. when we are gone, perhaps the only monuments that outlast us will be the evidence of our folly rather than testaments to our greatness. we don't get to choose, and we won't even know.
