I spotted this little woodpecker quickly moving around smaller branches of a maple tree along the banks of the Red Cedar River. The tapping sound was rather faint and at first made me think it was much further away.
It is interesting to observe the behavior of these birds, as they are so well adapted to both their environment and the way in which they feed on wood inhabiting insects. Their claws and stiff tail feathers allow them to brace themselves as they hammer away at the tree and hang from branches in various position, including upside down.

This is the first monarch I have seen this summer. The numbers and diversity of butterflies seems to be quite low this year, with the exception of cabbage whites.

This panorama was merged from 3 single shots taken with the 90 mm lens when the last sunlight was shining at Zugspitze in spring 2024. After development of the raw files in Lightroom and merging them I added a linear gradation filter to optimize management of contrast and colours.

These four male pearl crescents were spotted in a muddy area, where they were taking up water and minerals. Puddling is a common behavior of butterflies and they can occasionally be seen congregating in groups in such areas. The behavior is reported to be restricted to males in many species, and this may be true for pearl crescents, in which males can be differentiated by the black tips on their antennae.
