This is a mating pair of sandhill cranes that we have observed over the last two years in the same area around Eastgate Park. The female has a districtive gate because of an injured right leg. They are a solitary pair and we have not seen them with a chick.

I thought I would share three additional photos of the hairy woodpecker posted yesterday as they demonstrate some interesting aspects of the bird's behavior.
In this shot, you can see that the bird is able to hammer on the brach while hanging upside down. The long curved claws and stiff tail feathers allow the bird to brace itself while hammering.

In this shot, you can see the same posture the bird adopts when hammering on a branch with the clawed feet and tail feathers acting like a tripod.

This panorama was merged from 6 single shots taken with the 180 mm lens from the tripod with late sunlight illuminating only some parts of the chain of Wetterstein mountains due to a rather cloudy sky. From left to right we can see the rocky peaks of Waxenstein, Schönangerspitze and Riffelspitzen.
After editing the single shots with equal parameters in Lightroom and merging contrast was optimized in Photoshop via an additional layer with a special gradation curve.

These are part of the herd that frequent our neighborhood. They look quite healthy this year, likely a result of the mild winter.

This sighting was a real surprise. While walking through a wooded area of the park along the Red Cedar River, I noticed this heron wading in the river through the trees, about 50-60 feet in the distance. It's the first heron I've seen in this area. Quite a day.

The small fruits are reported to attract numerous birds in early autumn, but that didn't seem to be the case this morning.
