This little ornament used to adorn a kitchen window many years ago but has been packed away following a move. It seemed a perfect subject to bring to life with a bit of backlight.

An interesting and totally unexpected find on a late afternoon walk along a familiar path, especially since I decide to take along a medium telephoto lens and leave the strobe at home.

Artomyces pyxidatus is a wood decay fungus found in hardwood and mixed wood forests. It is generally referred to as a crown tipped coral fungus or antler fungus. It is reported as common although I have never seen it before. It is also reported to be edible, but have some cathartic effects.

This shot was taken on a sunny but windy afternoon. This female common whitetail kept a tight grip on this small stalk as it whipped back and forth in the wind.

Revisiting the patch (roughly 250 sq. ft.) of bergamot growing along the trailhead at Eastgate Park, we spotted the first Eastern tiger swallowtail and the clearwing hummingbird moth we saw earlier in the week. Both of these appeared in the patch for only a few moments before disappearing from view.

Heard this flicker joyously singing in the distance, after a day of intense rain and wind. Tried to get a bit closer, but he wasn't having it.

At last, the wildflowers in the butterfly garden are beginning to bloom. It shouldn't be long before we see butterflies and hummingbirds.

Easter is the one day a year when eggs are celebrated, so putting a spotlight on one seemed appropriate.

This lone sandhill crane was spotted in a local cornfield this morning. I missed it at first as it blends so well into the background, especially on a windy day when it was moging in the same direction as the corn stubble.

This is a mating pair of sandhill cranes that we have observed over the last two years in the same area around Eastgate Park. The female has a districtive gate because of an injured right leg. They are a solitary pair and we have not seen them with a chick.
