Unicode represents the Tower ob Babel en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tower_of_Babel In computing, Unicode is an industry standard allowing computers to consistently represent and manipulate text expressed in most of the world's writing systems. Developed in tandem with the Universal Character Set standard and published in book form as The Unicode Standard, Unicode consists of a repertoire of more than 100,000 characters, a set of code charts for visual reference, an encoding methodology and set of standard character encodings, an enumeration of character properties such as upper and lower case, a set of reference data computer files, and a number of related items, such as character properties, rules for normalization, decomposition, collation, rendering and bidirectional display order (for the correct display of text containing both right-to-left scripts, such as Arabic or Hebrew, and left-to-right scripts). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UniCode

Fry, Edmund, 1754-1835. Pantographia; : containing accurate copies of all the known alphabets in the world; together with an English explanation of the peculiar force or power of each letter: to which are added, specimens of all well-authenticated oral languages; forming a comprehensive digest of phonology.
One of the leading English type founders of the eighteenth century, Fry spent some sixteen years compiling this work which includes more than two hundred alphabets, including eighteen varieties of the Chaldee and thirty-two of the Greek. Many of the characters were expressly cut by Fry for his book.

ASU's Interdisciplinary Committee on Linguistics presents Jennifer Roth-Gordon, Associate Professor of Anthropology at University of Arizona in the talk, "Language as Embodied Practice: Slang and Whiteness in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil."
What does slang use have to do with race? In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, race is not fixed, given, "possessed," or easily reducible to phenotype or skin color. Instead, people who live in Rio "read" the body for racial signs. The amount of whiteness a body displays is determined not only through observations of skin color, hair texture, and facial features, but also through careful attention to cultural and linguistic practices, like the use (or avoidance) of nonstandard speech that is commonly described as gíria (slang).
Understanding slang use (or avoidance) as a form of racialized bodily training sheds light on the relationship between race and language and how power, privilege, and racial hierarchy can be upheld through language use.
This event is hosted by the Department of English, is free of charge and open to the public.
