I will sing your name as the valley sings the echo of the bells; I will listen to the language of your soul as the beach listens to the history of the waves.

In the midst of the Apennines that cross the regions of Umbria and Marche, recently restored, this church and place have attracted my attention. Probably because it was miles that you could not see houses and souls and I asked myself

who can come here .... is the same area of the solitary house in my previous photo ....

In the summer these places become magical, with their fresh and green oxygen.

A thought in contrast with the sad news of fires in Greece and other parts of the world ....

Thanks for your recent visits, favorites, comments and invitations. I go slow, but everything is very much appreciated, as always....

Alert, fear, anxiety, intimidation, defensiveness and in heightened state. This communication method is known as "piloerection." Same thing when dog's hair is pointing straight up to intimidate another one or ready to fight. This was the Black-crowned Night Heron's reaction to a mink running its way and then behind the branch (see other picture).

Think "Holland" and you've probably already conjured the iconic images of tulips and windmills. More precisely, the very specific windmills you're envisioning right now are that of Kinderdijk.

Though it may sound odd for how technical and pragmatic the region proved to be, the name Kinderdijk translates in Dutch to mean "children's dike." According to local legend, after a particularly terrible flood in the 15th century, a lone basket was left floating in an inundated canal. Upon closer inspection, a cat was found bounding from one side of the basket to the other in an effort to keep it balanced, for inside rested an orphaned baby. The cat had kept the babe afloat, safe and sound during its journey… Thus giving the world the folktale "The Cat and the Cradle" in addition to the village of Kinderdijk its name.

Back in the modern day, visitors will find 19 historically authentic windmills scattered across Kinderdijk's canal-riddled landscape. With their sails raised to the skies (coming to rest in formations that communicate across the bogs in a language of semafors), one could be forgiven for believing these are creatures beholden to the air. What history reveals, in fact, is that the Netherlands' famous windmills are well-disguised creatures of the sea, without which the nation's famously innovative water management system would not have been possible.

Sometime in the 13th century, Zuid-Holland's peat rivers ceased to drain as they had been, creating a pattern of flooding that devastated the beautiful landscape at Alblasserwaard, which already existed below sea level. Berms were built to prevent flooding, but pumping stations needed to be constructed to continue water flow from low to high areas; hence, the 19th windmills still seen today.

Nowhere else in the world offers a complete portrait of early water management like that of Kinderdijk, which accounts for UNESCO's inclusion of the site among its World Heritage as of 1997 for its "unique character." Thanks to its truly groundbreaking unification of sea and sky, plus the added bonus of a world-renowned folktale, a visit to Kinderdijk is the sort of treasure that offers something for dreamers and pragmatists alike. www.atlasobscura.com/places/windmills-of-kinderdijk

Three years ago I published an image like this under the title Incubus. This was the text going with it:

"This is the tool, a pitchfork, that the man who wishes to be the British Prime Minister wants to use in order to drive out the "great incubus", namely the European Union. Words matter. "Incubus" is a term taken from religious language. It describes the Devil entering you sexually. When Mr Boris Johnson conjures up the scenario of the EU f...g the UK from behind and that he would "pitchfork" it off the back of the British people [BBC interview, 24/6/19] you know what you have to expect. You have been warned."

Today, Mr Johnson resigned from office. His incompetence and dishonesty caused great damage inside and outside of the UK. Those who supported him and swept him into power have to ask themselves how they are going to regain credibility.

LANGUAGE OF THE HAWK

Is mathematics the language of the universe?

I find it neat that many plants (haha, but not all!) follow a mathematical rule called the "Golden Ratio" when they grow. Using this ratio (and a numbering sequence attributed to Fibonacci but known in India for hundreds of years before), each petal is able to get the maximum amount of sunlight it possibly can. Next time you see a sunflower, take a close look - its growth pattern can be described using mathematics!

Encounter, part 2. This is the same cinnamon Black Bear seen in yesterday's post. Its body language is very different. It takes a worried bear to give me a look like that. Interesting comparison, I think.

After I'd been working with it alone for 15 minutes or so and this bear had accepted me as non-threatening, along came a couple of tourists in their car. There was a slight bend in the road behind me, where my car was, about 50 feet away and slightly to the right. Instead of pulling up directly behind me, they stopped 75 feet short, triangulating the bear. Behind the bear was a mountain wall.

Its stress level went straight up. Ears back, fear in its eyes. I began talking to it in a soft voice and slowly backing up, trying not to trip over roots and branches, while it considered possible options. And all ended well, as I was able to give it a clear escape path, which it took.

Then I walked over and had a little talk with the tourists. I was calm. You can't teach people by yelling at them. I told them they had created a dangerous situation for me, and why: "You effectively surrounded the bear, and that put me at risk."

Of course, I knew from the start this might happen. I had my own escape route in mind all along. After a few minutes with this bear, I was pretty sure we could read each other and no one would get his nose out of joint. But tourists always increase the danger level, because "reading" wildlife is a foreign concept to them and they unwittingly do dumb things. I'd much rather photograph bears in the back country.

FLORAL LANGUAGE in RED...

#AbFav_PHOTOSTORY

#AbFav_The_COLOUR_RED_💋

The red flowers say it all.

From ‘I love you’ to ‘I can’t live without you,’ from ‘I am pissed’ to ‘I am proud of you!’

When you find yourself fumbling for the right words to describe the situation and when you can’t figure out what might be the right gift for your special occasion, always trust the red flowers to do their job.

Red blooms also represent strength and courage.

They exude energy and positive vibes.

They are just so varied, delightful!

Have a glorious day and thank you, M, (*_*)

“For last year's words belong to last year's language

Happy first day of 2015 my friends,

may your New Year be bright and inspired!

One of the real highlights of my recent trip was a visit to the remote and historical village of Khinaliq. This settlement stands at an altitude of seven and a half thousand feet and is said to be almost five thousand years old. A road was finally driven into this village in 2006 and prior to that date transport would have been on horseback for all those who needed to venture to the outside world. Khinaliq is still some distance, perhaps a hour and a half from the nearest town by motor vehicle and that is over a very basic stretch of tarmac.

Since I returned I have watched the Bettany Hughes documentary on Treasures of Azerbaijan and it was no surprise that she visited this location. It seems that the occupants of the three hundred properties speak their own language and in the most part are more than content with their remote lifestyle. We had a broken conversation with a young lad who had gone away to the big city to study but had returned on the day of our visit. He was happy to try his English out on me and advised that all youths do the same as him. They are brought up in the village, go away to be educated and then return back to the village.

By way of a geographical explanation, the huge mountains in the background are part of the High Caucus and are over the border in Russia. In the foreground some of the village elders are seen having a catch up.

Taken at the Qingdao Cruise Terminal, Qingdao, China.

For this project, inspiration of the architectural form came from the “sail”, which is famous in Qingdao, The city of Sailing, as well as rows of pitched roof from Qingdao’s historical architecture. To further express the mechanical beauty, the steel structure is exposed on the exterior without curtain walls, so that the structural form becomes the most powerful language of the façade. The interior sprung roof reveals the main structure as possible as it can, so that passengers are still able to read the structural logic and mechanical beauty of the architecture.

Interior and light

The arrival and departure hall on the first floor provides checking-in and luggage services. After that, through vertical lifts and walkways, passengers will arrive on the second-floor Foyer and wait for departure. The customer service is also located on the second floor. Its skylights, through the combination of aluminum board and glass, have transformed the inclined surface of the roof into stepped ramp, which has not only solved the problem of floodwater containment, but also introduced soft light with the modular rhythm of light and shadow. Meanwhile, the public hall of the cruise terminal can also hold temporary exhibitions and so on public activities.

Volcano Kawah Ijen, Indonesia 伊真火山——印度尼西亚

The Ijen volcano complex is a group of stratovolcanoes in the Banyuwangi Regency of East Java, Indonesia. It is inside a larger caldera Ijen, which is about 20 kilometers wide. The Gunung Merapi stratovolcano is the highest point of that complex. The name "Gunung Merapi" means "mountain of fire" in the Indonesian language.

Have a GREAT week everyone!!!

Oahu, Haiwaii. Mānana Island is an uninhabited islet located 0.75 mi (1.21 km) off Kaupō Beach, near Makapuʻu at the eastern end of the Island of Oahu in the Hawaiian Islands. In the Hawaiian language, mānana means "buoyant." The islet is commonly referred to as Rabbit Island, because its shape as seen from the nearby Oahu shore looks something like a rabbit's head and because it was once inhabited by introduced rabbits. Scanned from an Ektachrome slide.

ANNOUNCEMENT: The word "Squaw" will soon be removed from locales and geographical features in the U.S., it was announced recently. When the word was widely used in the 19th century, many people were unaware of its racist and sexist connotations toward Native American women. (During that same era, the infamous N word was also widely used for geographic features. Those names were removed decades ago, in some cases at the cost of historical accuracy.)

The 26th of April was one of those days where I woke up, and the whole world was just not the place I wanted to be today. Too loud, too busy, too many things going wrong. These days happen, they're part and parcel of dealing with mental health issues like PTSD. Even with Blue's help, today is a struggle. And that's okay. Now if Foxtrot could please stop pulling a Tobago and picking up on my sour mood, it would be very much appreciated. Funny how many horrible words horsemen will use to describe their horses - if we really hated them half as much as our language sometimes suggests, we wouldn't be horsemen at all!

This amazing photographer I happened to run into ;)

He & I speak the same language, & we understand each other so well. Funny part is, we never had to exchange a single word to know exactly what the other was thinking. It's a photographer thing ;) Helps that we are both Canon users, as well ;)
