All 8 ShiftBars are attached to an Arduino (Seeeduino) and ShiftBrite Shield. I've made several patterns, some of which simulate lightning or candle flickering.
Materials required for making a simple Low Cost LED marker:
1 X 9 or 12 Volt LED
You can muck about with resistors if you want to, but it's not worth the savings!
I used Night Lites Ltd. KLL-5321-12V (Red), KLL-5331-12V (Green) and KLL-5351-12V (Yellow). Knight Lites also makes flashing 12 Volt LEDs, but they don't stand up well to the heat of the hot glue, and the flashing gets kind of funky. They also make other colours, but they are much more expensive!

Artist's Tape
DON'T use regular masking tape! It does not come off cleanly at all. Even artist's tape leaves a tacky residue that needs to be removed with something like WD-40.
You will also need a hot glue gun, solder, a soldering iron and a few plastic bottle caps.
