Sam and myself took some long exposure pictures in the basement of Cord, in the northern quarter, manchester. One of us was posing while the other one was drawing shapes with an LED.

Add a couple of bright white LED's (10000 mcd) to swimming goggles and you've got a cheap strobe capable of photic driving.
Can be fed audio output from an MP3 Player or a PC sound card. Most of these devices can generate 4Hz or lower signal at a high enough amplitude to drive this circuit.
I would think almost any opamp could be substituted...TLC272 only chosen because it was the closest handy.
You can create low frequency wavefors easily using Audacity via Generate Menu ==> Tone... select low frequency (ie: 8Hz), amplitude=1. You can append multiple tone generations to get a range of strobing frequencies. If you select the 'Chirp' option you can create a sweep.
Then export the file as MP3 file and play out PC soundcard or load into MP3 player if you want this to be portable.

An earlier drilling test can be seen to the right of the LED's. As it stands I am not sure I am a fan of our current plan, each LED cluster will require 4 holes, which equates to 56 * 4 = 224 holes, each one of which needs to be pretty precisely placed to not over bend the LED leads and not to drill them so close that the holes merge.

Our under cabinet "rope" lighting needed replacing so we decided to try something different this time around. We settled on going LED and selected the 12v tape shown in these images. Local sources were few and any that we found were very expensive so we purchased everything we needed on eBay direct from vendors in China.
There are several LED sizes and densities available so we settled on the 3528 size with 600 LEDs in a 5 meter (16.4 feet) length. That's about 3 every inch. The tape we purchased is weatherproof which means it is encased in plastic. There was also an adheasive back to it.
We purchased a 5 meter roll of tape, a 60w 12v power supple, some connectors, and an adaptor to connect our lighting to the power supply for about $35. A few calculations showed us that the entire roll needed about 30 watts so I purchased a 60 watt just to be on the safe side. I ended up using just over half of the roll.
We have these lights on a timer so they go on/off automatically.
A Follow Up....
As mentioned above, I powered the installation with a 60w power supply exactly TWICE what the whole roll required. Since I only used about 1/2 of the roll, I ended up over powering things a lot.
Anyway, the LEDs only lasted 3-4 months before some (most) of them burned out.
In hindsight, I should have used a lower wattage power supply AND put a dimmer in the line to reduce brightness.
LED strip lights, ribbons or tapes are one of the most popular LED products available on the market.

Interesting fact: Unlike incandescent bulbs, LED Christmas lights do not burn constantly. They flicker on/off many times per second. This photo illustrates that.
I forgot to unset the 2-second delay and pitched the camera forward to see what was wrong. While looking at the LCD screen, the camera took this 1/4 second shot.
While the CFLs and daylight in the picture are fluid, the LEDs on my deck are staccato.

(wish I could get the lighting/exposure to both be long enough to hide the scanning but short enough so the light from the LEDs doesn't blow out the image)
