Recently, a new trend has come into the limelight in the UK. People are more and more interested in buying LED stair lights. Stairway lighting has always been popular though and people have traditionally used a regular bulb. As it was their only option, but not anymore as times have changed....

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (pronounced [ˈmoːɦənd̪aːs ˈkərəmtʃənd̪ ˈɡaːnd̪ʱi] ( listen); 2 October 1869 – 30 January 1948) was the preeminent leader of Indian independence movement in British-ruled India. Employing nonviolent civil disobedience, Gandhi led India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. The honorific Mahatma (Sanskrit: "high-souled", "venerable"[2])—applied to him first in 1914 in South Africa,[3]—is now used worldwide. He is also called Bapu (Gujarati: endearment for "father",[4] "papa"[4][5]) in India.

Born and raised in a Hindu merchant caste family in coastal Gujarat, western India, and trained in law at the Inner Temple, London, Gandhi first employed nonviolent civil disobedience as an expatriate lawyer in South Africa, in the resident Indian community's struggle for civil rights. After his return to India in 1915, he set about organising peasants, farmers, and urban labourers to protest against excessive land-tax and discrimination. Assuming leadership of the Indian National Congress in 1921, Gandhi led nationwide campaigns for easing poverty, expanding women's rights, building religious and ethnic amity, ending untouchability, but above all for achieving Swaraj or self-rule.

Gandhi famously led Indians in challenging the British-imposed salt tax with the 400 km (250 mi) Dandi Salt March in 1930, and later in calling for the British to Quit India in 1942. He was imprisoned for many years, upon many occasions, in both South Africa and India. Gandhi attempted to practise nonviolence and truth in all situations, and advocated that others do the same. He lived modestly in a self-sufficient residential community and wore the traditional Indian dhoti and shawl, woven with yarn hand spun on a charkha. He ate simple vegetarian food, and also undertook long fasts as the means to both self-purification and social protest.

Gandhi's vision of a free India based on religious pluralism, however, was challenged in the early 1940s by a new Muslim nationalism which was demanding a separate Muslim homeland carved out of India.[6] Eventually, in August 1947, Britain granted independence, but the British Indian Empire[6] was partitioned into two dominions, a Hindu-majority India and Muslim Pakistan.[7] As many displaced Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs made their way to their new lands, religious violence broke out, especially in the Punjab and Bengal. Eschewing the official celebration of independence in Delhi, Gandhi visited the affected areas, attempting to provide solace. In the months following, he undertook several fasts unto death to promote religious harmony. The last of these, undertaken on 12 January 1948 at age 78,[8] also had the indirect goal of pressuring India to pay out some cash assets owed to Pakistan.[8] Some Indians thought Gandhi was too accommodating.[8][9] Nathuram Godse, a Hindu nationalist, assassinated Gandhi on 30 January 1948 by firing three bullets into his chest at point-blank range.[9]

Indians widely describe Gandhi as the father of the nation.[10][11] His birthday, 2 October, is commemorated as Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday, and world-wide as the International Day of Nonviolence. He was the mentor of Indira Gandhi.

Union Pacific in Victorville, California, March 1982

My 1982 Air National Guard "summer camp" was a deployment to George AFB in Victorville, California in support of Gallant Eagle 1982 in March and April.

It turned out to be a vacation for which I got military leave from my civilian job at McClellan AFB, so my regular full pay, plus my E-5 pay from the Guard.

And, I worked maintenance standby on grave shift, so, unless something broke, we pretty much slept in the shop van and had the days to do what we wanted.

I drove my VW bug to Victorville, so I had transportation and, since Victorville is at the east end of Cajon Pass, I spent most days doing at least some railfanning.

Not a bad deal at all!

Early on in the deployment, perhaps the day I arrived, I saw a couple of Union Pacific trans at the Southwest Portland Cement plant at Victorville. UP 3540 led a pig train that ran around UP 3680 while it was switching the plant. UP 3680 looked sharp in fresh paint in the low afternoon sun.

At the time, UP SD40-2s were everywhere on the UP system and as pool power on other roads, so these were very everyday photos. As proof of the durability of these units, UP is still using some of them in switching work.

The Community Boat Project students, led by Captains Wayne Chimenti and MB Armstrong and veteran teacher Marci Van Cleve, launched the fourth boat built in the program, the 32-foot sailing vessel EPIC.

The Community Boat Project is a unique partnership between the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding (the lead organization), Port Townsend School District (#50), Chimacum School District (#49), 4-H/Washington State University (WSU), and the Puget Sound Voyaging Society.

You can see what the Shop is doing at their website, here: communityboats.wordpress.com/

It is an "all ages, all volunteers" community-oriented non-profit organization specializing in free, accredited programs for high school students.

Intergenerational maritime education is the mission of the Community Boat Shop.

The Shop strives to give youth a "sense of place" by connecting them to the environment, the economy, and the people of the Olympic Peninsula.

In short, Community Boat Project volunteers --build-- large voyaging boats with high school students - one large boat per year - while the non-profit Puget Sound Voyaging Society, which runs at the same time, and then through the summer, teaches high school students how to -- use-- those same boats.

The program's philosophy is centered on five principles.

Social Justice: Quality educational opportunities should be available to all. Therefore all Community Boatshop programs are free to public school youth or sliding scale that matches the needs of any group. Community Boatshop programs are open to all.

Community Supported Education: Education should be community driven. The Local Community drives what is important to learn. Community Boatshop programs are funded by donations of materials and money from the community, and are run on 100% volunteer expertise and energy.

Experiential Learning: Learning is best done through hands-on, real meaningful experiences.

Environmental Sustainability and Sensitivity: The environmental implications of all of Community Boatshop actions are considered, and the the best choice made for minimum impact.

Empowerment: There is a leader in every person.

The Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding is located in Port Hadlock WA and is a private, accredited non-profit vocational school.

The School's mission is to teach and preserve the fine art of wooden boatbuilding and traditional maritime crafts.
