Dora and Alfred started complaining that their photos had a flat, 'snapshot' look because of the flash. Since their birthdays were coming up they asked for a Westcott Ice Light 2. It looks kind of like a light saber with a battery and a bunch of LEDs and costs $500.

Yeah, no.

But I surprised them with a lower-cost solution, an LED516AS. It looks kind of like a light saber with a battery and a bunch of LEDs and costs $150.

There are comparisons online but suffice it to say that you pay what you get for and so far, this suits our needs.

In this shot the light is camera left and the flash fired. Dora's pupils are constricted because of the LEDs and she has nice catchligts in the eyes. Best of all, you can make out her mouth and whisker roots.

She's happier.

and yes, before anybody reminds me: i know my choice of jump wire colours leaves a lot to be desired...should get myself a few more red and black ones.

Many (actually far too many) years ago a camera magazine printed a photo taken of a group of lamps and the technique used a long shutter speed combined with camera movement to produce a neat pattern. Last night I stepped outside and on a whim shot some frames of the Christmas lighting in front of the house in an attempt to adapt that old technique. Most are uninteresting but the odd one happened to appeal to me. If you look closely you can see the lamps' LEDs come out as dot trails because the LEDs are blinking rapidly (faster than you can see) to reduce power consumption. This is one of the frames I liked.. The combination of colours and shapes reminded me of a tartan fabric my wife used in a sewing project many years ago. - JW

The image was taken using a hand-held Olympus E-3 fitted with a Zuiko 12-60mm lense set to 46mm (92mm full frame equivalent), ISO200, EV-2 bias, Aperture priority mode, f/8.0, 4 sec and a lot of camera movement. PP in GIMP: slight tone curve adjust to make the background closer to black while preserving the lamp trail colours, added white separation lines top and bottom, added black bars top and bottom by expanding the canvas size and adding a black filled layer below the image, added signature text, flattened and then scaled to 1024 wide for posting.
